Exactly, CDN is best for edge hosting (being able to load frequently loaded content at a closer locale). A CDN is also useful if you get periodic traffic surges (e.g., featured on Reddit or something), as it allows you to get a big overload without having complex load balancing (we’re talking something like jumping up to 1 million views in a week or something … this happened to us once and holy crap!). And it can be useful for some common stuff like jquery as it gets cached in browser so is not reloaded if everybody is loading it off Google’s server.

Also note that some CDN setups don’t properly gzip/deflate everything unless you set that up — some are managed, some are just like your own site meaning you have to manage TTL, CORS, expiration of content to refresh, gzip/deflate, headers, etc.

Frankly http/2 is going to be more mission critical with hosting services, and http/2 + mod_pagespeed is very powerful.

Wish me luck, I’ve optimized as much as I can and have re-activated the theme today.

I’m not able to use pagespeed though, seems my plugins aren’t compatible. I started disabling them to see if I can get it enabled, but after about six I gave up.

Thank you for your help. I’ve tried turn off every plugin, and tagdiv PageSpeed booster did the problems.

So I uninstalled it and now everything works fine.

Thanks for the replies. I am on SiteGround’s “Go Geek” shared hosting plan (https://www.siteground.com/web-hosting.htm). I don’t have much stats on the server, but it’s the best that I can afford. I’m thinking of switching to Amazon AWS but would like to make sure I’ve exhausted all other options.

I have followed many optimization guides that I’ve found online as well as TagDiv’s own guides. The only thing that I haven’t done is use WP Supercache, I was using a different one. I’ve also recently signed up for MaxCDN, but that didn’t help with the resource issues either. I just now implemented Disqus as I’ve read that can help too. Oh, and I wasn’t able to use pagespeed as my sharing plugin isn’t compatible, I can disable that plugin for testing purposes.

I get anywhere from 150-300k visitors a month depending on the strength of the box office. Most come from Google searches. SiteGround says that it’s not a visitor issue for the resources though.

But really, for the most part, my site is optimized. Yet SiteGround says that it was using three times more resources on the Newspaper theme than the basic one it’s running now.

I’d like to go back to Newspaper, but doubt that WP Supercache, Disqus and pagespeed will make that much difference, will it???

So in this case, do you recommend to me using cloudfare to minify instead the way you said before with GTmetrix? Does it have any risk to replace files which need to be solved?

I have a 95 % score in PageSpeed GTmetrix and 87 % YSlow, but when I check my website in google pagespeed insight, the score is lower, and I don´t know exactly if I should solve these issues.

In our case we’re a 33 year old publishing firm with dedicated server, so no need for external service. We use mod_pagespeed and server side caching, which caches our images but also auto converts to bleeding edge formats like “webp” for Chrome and Android, from our highly optimized jpeg images done here in Photoshop.

But most folks don’t spend $700+ a month on dedicated box 🙂

Of course, in your case if a plugin makes a local featured image, it then adds it to the gallery so that WP can generate the thumbs, which are NOT done from external URL. So, that might defeat the purpose of what you’re trying to do. You would need to build some kind of custom CDN hook to load the image from CDN into your post, then the plugin we use would make THAT a featured image and generate the thumbs for local loading on indexes.

I’m using W3TC and Cloudflare with Flexible SSL enabled. I’ve disabled minification on Cloudflare and am using W3TC to reduce the number of requests. I do basic minification of CSS and html, but not JS since minifying JS breaks images on my front page. I also combine all CSS into a single file and JS into a single file to reduce the number of requests to my server, which also has the benefit of removing query strings so I can be sure all my CSS, JS, and HTML is being cached correctly by any caching proxies between me and my readers. Minifying html also improves pagespeed slightly since Cloudflare doesn’t cache or optimize HTML.

This also has the added benefit of not having to do a manual process every time I update my Newspaper theme.

Obviously, I’ve also disabled Cloudflare in the W3TC plugin so it doesn’t know I’m using Cloudflare. This means if I do feel the need to clear my Cloudflare cache for some reason, I have to do it manually from the Cloudflare website.

pagespeed will always pick up on some thumbnails. You can customize the theme or choose to use just some of the theme’s blocks that aren’t “responsive by themselves”.

Some blocks are designed to show in different sizes depending on the size of the screen. Those blocks will show an 300px image if the screen is 1920×1080 but if you change to a tablet, the images will be 600px, in some phones in landscape, the “standard” 696×385 image even gets upscaled to 720px. To cover all the possibilities, the theme chooses to load the 696px image, even if sometimes it will downscale it to 350px. I like this feature of the theme, keeps it beautiful across devices, but it has this cost.

If you have pages with lots of blocks/images you might consider using the small blocks only and not the MX ones.

You can also show less articles per block and use the “load more” or infinite scroll, pagespeed will pick less thumbnails.

What about image lazyload? it should work as the above, pagespeed should only pick up the first images cause it doesn’t scroll down, but I’m not sure on this one.

The other solution is to edit the theme files and make them load a small thumbnail even if the block shows big in some cases. It will upscale a small thumbnail up to 700px and it will be ugly but pagespeed will approve. You have to weight things out and compromise.

Anyway, if you consistently get 696px images of 50KB, it’s not critical I believe. I manually “smush” my photos in PS, I don’t usually compress as much as you seem to compress and it still seems an acceptable compromise between performance/graphics. But soon I’ll move to something like WP smush because I’m getting authors/contributors.

To do that, Do I must to replace the optimized file instead the former?
