Template is missing. Standalone themes need to have a index.php template file. Child themes need to have a Template header in the style.css stylesheet.
Just purchased and uploaded to wp; this error comes up. please help?=

You have to upload it to the web somewhere, and then copy the link and then use the img button in the row up top. I used Dropbox and then shared, then copied link.

Please make sure you are installing the actual theme, not the whole package

So if you download the full theme package, once it is extracted the theme zip can be seen, like in this example

If you previously used a child theme please deactivate it in case it is active. The newspaper has a child theme included in the package if you require one
