I’m having the same issue. So, as you instructed, I setup xampp on my computer with php 5.5 and installed a fresh WordPress 3.9 and Newspaper 3.8.

If there is a plugin conflict causing this then it’s a plugin Newspaper is made to work with.

Yeah, because the Visual Composer went from being a built-in feature to a packaged plugin I figured that might happen. Glad you got it sorted and please do let me know how it works. Cheers.

Just checked USA Today, BBC, ABC, CNN, NBC and Fox News and all of them have varying headings. Two of them show your point.

I’m no SEO expert but it’s been my understanding that heading tags are treated with priority according to their size. So h3 is more important than h4 but less important than h2 or h1.

That being said, do you really want your block titles with higher priority in the page than your content?

Anyone else know better?

Yeah, having an issue with the buttons as well. Even the shortcodes for the buttons show all button options but they’re all for the small size.

According to this the plugin was only tested up to WordPress 3.3.2 and the admin menu in WordPress has been partially overhauled once, and mostly overhauled once since then. Also, it was last updated three months ago meaning before WP 3.9, 3.8.3, 3.8.2 and 3.8.1 were release.

Either way, have you tried contacting the people who made that plugin? They are who provide support for it regardless of whether or not tagDiv tried to make their theme compatible.

The theme doesn’t enforce AdSense TOS, it is just setup to allow you to follow their TOS better. Choose which 3 ads you want to show and leave it at that. You could use other ad sources for the remaining spots. eBay Network is decent.

Considering that your big slider navigation arrows are not working either, and assuming you have WordPress 3.9 and Newspaper 3.8 of course, I’d say it’s a plugin conflict. It’s not just the ajax issues you mentioned, but also the js working the slider controls. Conflicts are the most likely source of this issue.

If all browsers were the same then yes, you might be right. But since the different browsers do work differently behind all the pretty colors and sounds, I’m gonna go with those differences being more than just coincidence.

Now back to the topic at hand. How are you implementing your background color and image? Your site shows neither the color or image in Firefox.

How are you implementing your CDN? There may be a compatibility issue with Could Flare and Newspaper. And before you get snarky again these incompatibilities can occur without you doing anything messing up what worked before.

Chances are you need one of the dev team members to login and find the issue. Plugin conflict is still the most likely, next would be custom CSS error/lack of cross browser compatibility.

The 404 error you get is saying that you’re using inline images encoded in Base64 – a not-so-reliable way of reducing HTTP requests when loading images that is known to cause issues to websites, not themes or software, but websites of all types. Are you running any compression, caching or other website speed-up plugins?

Just use the sharing functions of WordPress/JetPack. Go to settings -> sharing to select the Facebook button and activate showing on posts.

Sure. When you said customizations that had to be moved I jumped to the obvious meaning – code. Glad it was just the settings as those are easily upgraded, and upgrading the theme doesn’t need anything done with them.

It’s a plugin conflict. I use the speed booster plugin with and without backgrounds and there is no cross browser difference.

I believe the speed booster plugin simply moves theme js to the footer.

It’s an experimental plugin still and does experience conflicts for some users so just disable it if you don’t want to hunt down the conflict.

Go to theme panel, ads tab, add your ad code in the sidebar section and save. Then go to widgets and add the Ad Box widget where you want it and select the Sidebar ad in the widget. Works for me.

I know what the problem is…

WP 3.9 contained some pretty huge changes, including media handling. Newspaper 3.7 specifically addressed these changes to maintain the themes compatibility with WP.

So it makes no sense to dig any further. You either need to revert back to WP 3.8.3 or upgrade the theme.

I’d strongly recommend that you take this time to do the following.

1. Revert back to WP 3.8.3 until the following steps are completed
2. Move all customizations from the parent theme to the Child Theme ( Child Theme Documentation – https://forum.tagdiv.com/child-theme-documentation/ )
3. Upgrade the theme to 3.8 following the specific instructions for the 3.7 update that are crucial future theme versions and your problem directly ( See the guide here – https://forum.tagdiv.com/newspaper-v-3-7/ – specifically note that the existing wpbakery folder must be deleted for 3.7 + to work )

It is a chore to move the customizations to the child theme but doing so means you can stay current on features and bug fixes without this headache in the future. Remember, every release of a theme and of WordPress includes bug fixes – not just the features you’re so eager to dismiss.

It’s a pain but take your time to do it once and things are just much simpler from there. Don’t forget to activate the child theme.

BTW – If you were running the latest version of wordpress you’d have issues. I recommend upgrading to WordPress 3.9 and Newspaper 3.8 right away.

Read this guide first – https://forum.tagdiv.com/newspaper-v-3-7/ – and just upload the full 3.8 files where it says to upload files. The rest will work out. The 3.7 update had a major change.

WordPress 3.9 is a milestone upgrade meaning it’s not just bug fixes. They made some major changes to some parts of the software.

Go download the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin at http://wordpress.org/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/. It’s free and recommended by tagDiv when you change an existing site to Newspaper. It may take a while to complete but once you activate the plugin look in your admin menu under Tools for Regen. Thumbnails and run it. If you experience any kind of timeout just run it again and again until it tells you that it has completed.

I see you have a lot of content. I ran that plugin with more. It took a while.

This will fix all of your thumbnails to the correct size. I also strongly recommend turning on cropping as picture above for all new images you add. With it on a lot of the work is done for you. Just make sure you upload about 800px wide images and it’s load and go for you.

1. If you’re talking about typography then yes, there are two different size of fonts used for the blocks. Some blocks have a larger layout than others. Play with it on a local install and you’ll see fast how that works.

2. tagDiv team should handle this one.

3. Unique articles means on that page where you enable it, no article will show up more than once on that page. It filters duplicate entries from the post loop on that page only.

Save a copy of your files first, then upload the whole 3.8 theme. No other way. You’ll have to manually re-enter your customizations. See my reply to your other post about this for more details.

Not exactly the kind of issue I had… I messed up.

For your problem, unfortunately, you must upload the whole theme fresh since you missed the patches – that’s the most sure-fire way to get it done.

If your customizations are in all in the Custom CSS tab of the theme panel, then they are safe in the database.

If your customizations are all in the child theme files then they are safe from a full install of the parent theme.

If your customizations are all in the parent theme then you have just a few choices and none are great.

1. Never update the theme again, which also means you can’t upgrade to WordPress 3.9 as 3.6 and below of the theme aren’t compatible with WP 3.9
2. Best Option – Move your customizations to the child theme and Custom CSS of the theme panel so you don’t lose them on future upgrades to the parent theme ( Here’s Newspaper child theme documentation – https://forum.tagdiv.com/child-theme-documentation/ )
3. Worst Option – copy all of your customizations to Newspaper 3.8, meaning you’ll have to do that with each update
4. You could go through all of the updates since version X to 3.8 compiling a complete list of modified files, but if you miss one your site will likely break ( 3.7 had a major change, see https://forum.tagdiv.com/newspaper-v-3-7/ for instructions to convert the Visual Composer to a plugin )

Still seems like such a waste to have to do so much for something as simple as that. Maybe WordPress will find another way, or TimThumb will get with the program again.

I tested it on my demo by adding in the time format string to the date custom string and it shows on the home page blocks, the sidebar blocks, the category archives and single.php with no other changes needed.

Not hugely helpful but you’ve apparently piqued my curiosity on this one.

Have you considered using a service like http://www.imgix.com/ to store images? The theory is they host the full scale version and then you just pull the correctly cropped version from their servers for each instance you need using their API. It’s quite a robust API from the documentation.

Of course, filtering the correct sizes through your feeds becomes a challenge but seems like a matter of methodical manipulation – manageable.
