I don’t know about precedent as most businesses sued must choose to settle, over risks of going to court and damages of losing … but we can always hope what you suggest is true.

Here is one link:

Chris,

Thanks for that. Both are worth pursuing here (WP plugin and Chrome audit).

I appreciate the time you took. Believe it or not, it may prove quite helpful. Not that we’re looking to move to a different theme at all actually, but just your honest impressions — which you offered. Upswings in these types of lawsuits represent opportunistic and frivolous intent and (ironically) are largely unconcerned with issues of accessibility.

I’ll discuss with the client. Thanks again!

Not a plugin. So I guess I’m talking about the built-in WordPress codecs? Thanks for the link. I’ve looked it over and don’t see anything about audio or muting. But I’m also curious if the theme (Newspaper) offers me anything for muting? Here is the barebones code:

[video autoplay="autoplay" width="300px" height="250px" mp4="http://northeastoregonnow.com/wp-content/uploads/ad-good-shepherd-300x250-180925-1.mp4" link="http://www.gshcsevent.eventbrite.com/" loop="false"][/video]

Trying to find out if I have to go back to the source and have them send me a new file with no audio. Thanks.

Just here checking on my own issue and I noticed your question. I can answer it for you.

No conditional statement for AdRotate group, based on device, is necessary. AdRotate Pro has a section (called Advanced) on every Adverts page that allows you to specify based on criteria such as device, OS, and logged-in visitors; and provide fallback ads (sidebar-sized usually) to be served to those types of non-desktop devices. It’s easy to set up. They even include a handy icon for each “device type” in your current catalog of ads giving you INSTANT perspective on what ad is active on what device. It’s a beautifully intuitive touch.

I guess I shouldn’t assume that you are using the Pro version. I would doubt that this feature would be available in the free version. Sorry if I buried the lead here.

Corrected to say “is not accepting”

I realize this is not as relevant as some other issues here but … this site is not accepting a password change at the moment. I try to change online accounts every year or two for security. I use LastPass so there is no error of entry. I have tried 5-6 times but the edit profile page denies my new password each time despite a) entering and confirming a new password, b) clicking the UPDATE PROFILE button and c) getting the “User updated.” message in green. When I sign-off and try to sign back on, it fails until I re-enter the previous password. Is there a problem with this process that could explain this. Again, I am NOT incorrectly entering and confirming passwords.

I’ve done precisely as you say in the past (update WordPress the minute a new version is released) and that is what I am talking about. That is when the theme (not yours) was broken instantly by a new WP update. The policy of always asking ahead of time came out of those types of experiences. NOTE: We could not update our Newspaper theme to NP8 when it was relesased because we had just finished creating the site with the latest version of NP7 and would have had to start over and re-stage, according to the forum here. Client deadline prevented that.

Just updating to the latest WordPress version as soon as it is released is no guarantee that a site will not be rendered unusable due to theme issues. That is why many users who have had these experiences choose not to update. Not because they don’t want to or are being negligent. You mention that you do not test previous (including the relatively recent 7.8) versions of the Newspaper theme on the newest WordPress. Although I understand what you are saying, that is also why I am not free to update WordPress right now. I would literally be rolling the dice with no assurance of the outcome. Rolling back to an earlier version of WP after a theme is broken by a WP update is a somewhat volatile process with its own risks.

By the way, this is the first time I have asked a theme developer about compatibility prior to a WP update and have not gotten a yes or a no. Unfortunately, I have to be even more cautious on that basis. Thanks for responding. I do appreciate it.

Per your earlier advice which read:

“This should be addressed to http://openweathermap.org/.

We are a theme developer not a weather station. We only pull information from that site into our theme, but we have no control over the weather predictions.”

Even though I do not care about forecasted predictions as much as the current temperature, I did as you advised, contacted them, and received this response:

“Thanks a lot for such detailed information. However, we do not develop weather widgets for WordPress. We just provide data for it.

I think it would be better to ask for support its developer. So if there is issues with the data we will contact with the Developer and resolve the issue.”

That response from OpenWeatherMap.org makes perfect sense and made me feel a little silly for contacting them. I clearly need information from/about the developer. Which brings me back to the developer of the theme that chose to include this weather element/widget in its theme package (Newspaper 7).

Can you tell me who the developer is for this Weather element? It is in the section of tagDiv elements (blue-shaded) in Visual Composer. If I need to talk to its developer to figure out why it is not updating often enough and why our temperatures are reading up to 15 degrees F off based on infrequent updating of up to a few hours, how can I contact them? It is just too slow to display new temp data and is therefore never accurate (or even close). Here are some new facts learned on my end:

The temp at OpenWeatherMap DOES NOT MATCH my temp in the following way: The temperature is either hotter or colder based on the time of day. It reads much cooler when the temp is climbing early in the day and it reads much warmer the other half of the time when temps are falling. The reason appears simple. It has simply not updated to the latest temp at any given point in time except when it does so at VERY lengthy intervals ranging up to 3 hours or more.

Further:

At any point, if I click on the GPS icon and do nothing more than type in my city (exactly the way it was typed already) and hit ENTER on my keyboard … the temperature automatically adjusts itself to the accurate current temp. But if I refresh the page, it immediately changes back to the inaccurate temp.

Can you help me with the details about the developer of the weather element that I’ve requested? Are you the developer, do you know who the dev is? Why would you tell me to contact the data provider rather than get in touch with the developer. Do you agree with what the data provider said in his response?

We are still trying to salvage this otherwise elegant widget/element on a new site. It is clearly capable of displaying the correct temperature, but can only do so once every few hours when it “phones home” to get the data, instead of every few minutes. In the meantime, our temp looks non-credible.

Firebox is behaving exactly the same as Chrome and displaying disparate temperatures at the same lag. The manual GPS entry method mentioned above results in the exact same thing in Firefox as Chrome.

Thanks for your help.

I understand, but I was just wondering what recommendations you might have amassed over the life of this theme so far. It is obviously a disparity that affects everyone (i.e. everyone using the built-in NP7 weather element) whereby OpenWeather does not seem to be polling current temperatures often enough or only doing so once per hour, etc. The end result is that the temperature always lags behind as it rises and displays as too high when it is falling.

There’s no way I am the first person that is encountering this and we certainly don’t require pinpoint accuracy. This disparity is enough that a large number of users/customers would eventually notice it.

Do you have any weather plugins that you recommend. Let’s be clear, NP7’s weather function is one of the initial accents or selling points a customer notices when first noticing the high quality of the theme. It was impressive and elegant and seemed to fit perfectly. Now we are finding we may have to toss it out because it will never hold up to even casual scrutiny. By the way, my concern is about current temperatures, not predicted highs and lows.

Thanks very much.

I received this question from my client about the NP7 Weather element (top and sidebar).

“I’ve noticed that the weather temperature at the top and on the sidebar is several degrees less than the temperature displayed at the National Weather Service. When it was about 94 degrees a couple of days ago, it said 88 on our page.

Just now, the temperature is 70 on the NWS page and 63 degrees on our neonow page. The forecasts also are several degrees less.

Any idea?”

We obviously need the weather function for our site but the disparity in current and forecasted temperatures is just not accurate. Can you help?

By the way, NWS (National Weather Service) is the standard in the U.S. for checking current temperatures, so their numbers are considered accurate enough to compare to.

I guess I should also ask, just in case I am too skittish to update to NP8 at this point. Is Newspaper 7.8 and WordPress 4.7.5 okay together? I’m getting ready to launch a site and considering updating WP before doing so.

Unless I am misunderstanding, it is not just 10 minutes to do #6 “configure again your site with your logo and preferences” that can take days to get everything reconfigured back the way you had it, IF you are even able to do it at all completely. Is there no export/import of your NP7 settings? Thanks.
