It’s unfortunate that not only can’t this be updated from the dashboard or Envato Toolkit (meaning, my client could never do this herself)(And I only bought the Envato Toolkit for this reason), but the instructions on that link also failed because the file upload size was too big. Looks like it’s going to be a manual FTP with every update. I hope this changes in the future. I have to re-learn this fact every time there is an update, because I manage so many different sites with so many different themes and this is so particular and hard to remember about.

I don’t understand what you mean at all. A child theme is a place where you can make modifications to a theme that won’t be overwritten with future theme updates. Are you saying that my child theme will be overwritten when I update Newspaper? I have updated Newspaper several times so far without losing my customizations. I have given my child theme folder the name “the-kineticist”. I don’t see how that will be overwritten.

OK, so, I can make this change to the child theme instead of the parent theme. And then it will always be safe from future updates. Is that correct?

I’m not clear what you mean by that. I think I may have created my own child theme. I don’t remember anymore. It has a lot of other customizations too. What do I need to know?

I fixed mine, it required a Newspaper update and a WP Bakery plugin update that is included with the download of the Newspaper update. It was a bit of a convoluted process, because the plugin was too big to be uploaded from within my WP Dashboard and I had to FTP it. And, normally I wouldn’t download the Newspaper update because I use Envato Toolkit to update the theme from within the site. The Envato Toolkit update did not update WP Bakery.

Same problem here. I updated to WP 4.5 and the Visual Composer stopped working. Looks like I need to update WP Bakery, BUT:

I use the Envato Toolkit so my client can update the Newspaper theme from within WordPress dashboard. The instructions for the Visual Composer update only pertain to when you manually download the latest version of the Newspaper theme. Is there a more automatic way to do this? I want my client to be able to do routine WordPress updates herself, but not if the site is going to stop working until she goes through a convoluted process related to Newspaper and Visual Composer.

Unfortunately,that’s not quite what I need.

I also paid for and tried WP Autoset Featured Image Plus as suggested by TagDiv, but it requires the external image URL to be in the post itself, which is not the case with my setup – I am using Embedly.
Thanks for any suggestions you have, it sounds like a lot of people need this to work.

I have tried External Thumbnail, Nelio External Featured Image, and RB External Thumbnail. I currently have RB External Thumbnail activated, and am able to set the thumbnail, but it doesn’t get passed to Newspaper thumbnail, for example here. http://thekineticist.com/category/blog/

I have the same issue. I have tried a bunch of different plugins that work with other themes but they don’t work with Newspaper. I need to get this resolved in order to be able to move forward with this project. I have been searching for a solution for over a month now.

I think I got it.

I guess I can see how to filter by category in the visual composer, but how do I access what the shortcode would be?

Thanks, that shortcode works great. I don’t necessarily need it to detect the category, as long as I can filter by category. If it can be filtered, I could manage with an if/else statement for all of the categories. Is there a way to have it filter by category?

I’ve been in touch with the plugin developer of Auto Post Thumbnail Pro, and it actually doesn’t do what I need it to do. It is not pulling the external image from this post:

as the featured image. I am using the plugin Embedly to get the image in there. The only way the plugin can pull an external image is if the image is referenced explicitly, which it is not.

Nelio External Featured Image was able to do this, but it doesn’t work with Newspaper theme because of the way the featured image is called.

I can’t find anything in their documentation that refers to what you’re talking about.

I figured out that it was the Nelio External Featured Image plugin update that did it. If I deactivate Nelio plugin, I get my home page back. It wasn’t working right with Newspaper theme anyway.

That said, I do need a way to automatically pull the first external image as the featured image. The plugins that do this (Nelio External Featured Image and WP Autoset Featured Image Plus) do not work properly with Newspaper, because the featured image isn’t being called in the usual way using (get_)the_post_thumbnail for printing the img tag. I’m using Embedly for most of my content, and need to use external featured images. Do you have another method for me to automatically use the external image as the featured image since the typical plugins for this don’t work with Newspaper theme?
