Christopher is a long time WordPress user. Anything else you need to know is private ;-) I *do not* work for TagDiv, but I've been using their themes since late 2013.

FastCGI, suEXEC and OpCache

Suexec is a part of the apache webserver that allows cgi scripts run as the user in whose directory they are installed, rather than as the user ‘nobody’ or ‘apache’. This can be convenient both for security and practical reasons. The security restrictions imposed by suexec are documented at httpd.apache.org.

But good conversation to have with host .. “I want best setup for WordPress sites…. ” — if they don’t know what that means, get a new host πŸ™‚

So, yes. You do need a ‘verified’ personal account and not a ‘page’ account. Just like what it says.

So, did you try your verified personal account ?

basically have to over-ride the CSS …

style.css line 22052

.td-icon-mobile:before {
content: '\e80d';
}

to perhaps (based on current F.A. codes; which I don’t think are actually used)

.td-icon-mobile:before {
content: '\f0c9';
}

change the icon code to the one we want.

However, the above does not actually work, it looks like.

SO, wait for Monday and TagDiv back in the office πŸ™‚

Yes, use HTML and CSS.

simchris

That is entirely up to you and your web host and has nothing to do with the theme.

Basically you want to work with host to “optimize for wordpress….”

You do not have to have OpCache installed … it’s “recommended” — and is part of server setup and not part of WordPress or the theme.

Info on the differences between the two things you’re asking about:
https://forums.cpanel.net/threads/mod_ruid2-vs-suphp-costs-vs-benefits.269601/

But yes, OpCache is recommended.

So, yes, worth changing.

There are bugs in version 3.6 of Yoast SEO — see the Yoast support docs on the WordPress.org website.

See the docs – link right side of page – on how to update theme and plugins. FTP is the best way. Welcome to WordPress!

Yes, you need to optimize your site, no single plugin fixes everything.
Check your post with gtmetrix.com for examples of how to fix things if you did everything in the tutorials section here.

I remove those in my style sheet and I think in the main functions file.

Just remember to keep incrmemental changes, then test the change so you can roll back if you break something mid-journey.

Been using AMP with theme since Nov. 2015.

Simply install the official Automattic (people who make WordPress) AMP plugin.

https://wordpress.org/plugins/amp/

If using Yoast SEO, add the Yoast ‘Glue for AMP’ addon.

Ensure your site doesn’t break /amp/ endpoints by minifying, compressing, or rewriting the amp css (e.g., cloudflare, etc.).

I think that is about as “definite” an answer that you will get, as posted previously by the TagDiv theme. You could set up AMP yourself right now in 10 minutes. πŸ™‚

(( I don’t work here. Just a 4-year lurker πŸ™‚ ))

You know what, I actually agree on this one.

I also would like to switch to “hamburger” menu icon, as that is more common now.

I use a critical CSS generator that scans the page and generates that for me. I honestly forget which one we use; started with free version of something, now use a paid version of something. Might have to Google that until I go find it (I don’t use it everyday, obviously).

In midst of merging 13,000 articles from our old CMS on main website into WordPress using a paid plugin that lines up old category IDs with new ones, imports user accounts as authors in new system, etc. Very neat that so many companies build awesome importers to merge legacy 2004/5 era CMS stuff into modern WP dbase. Did that same with our main ecom system last year, too with another company.

Anyway… that was the quick and dirty answer this morning.

Google: “Critical CSS Generator” to find it. πŸ™‚

To access theme panel any user would have access to entire theme panel. I don’t think you can limit just one panel to a “user role” — but TagDiv might have answer, but might require programming something with a consultant via the API/CLI.

Best bet is to install an ad management plugin that has user roles, and then use that instead of the built-in simple theme ad manager version, which is intended only for admins.

Any ad can be loaded that doesn’t inject Javascript – that is the issue. For example we load an ad rotation script via shortcode, which has both adsense, amazon text only CSS/HTML ads, and our locally hosted text-only CSS/HTML ads. So, you can host your own ads — and graphics — via https.

But yes, if you’re using an ad network that must inject is own JS into page, especially not using https, that will not work. You might contact them to join the party πŸ˜‰

simchris

You can load any ad format into AMP as long as mobile friendly. We do it all the time …. simple function filter hooked into footer for AMP, you can load any shortcode in place.

In any case, again – not trying to contradict you in any way. I was just posting a different “vote” on the subject, as I personally would prefer we not get more code bloat.

Why not use Newspaper if you need the mobile theme ?

Sorry, not trying to be a pain. We’re both long time users ’round here. πŸ™‚

Not huge fan of AMP, personally, but we’re learning to live with it since we do want AMP stuff ‘featured’ in mobile, much like we are in midst of converting all our sites not already done, to https. Since Google will shamelessly pump up mobile + https + amp content over sites not using that.

simchris
tagDiv Member

AMP working well for us, as are things like Apple News, and the responsive design of theme already super fast on mobile, so in our case we’re good. Was not trying to contradict your need, just voicing an opinion I’d rather not see this theme become as “over-built” as Newspaper theme, personally.

simchris
tagDiv Member

We would prefer not having mobile theme for Newsmag, personally, as adds complexity to theme.

Also with responsive design already working very well for mobile with 100UX score for GPS, we are happy.

Further, with massive rollout of /AMP/ finally happening for all sites and not just news portals, separate mobile theme less needed for all those in the Googleverse.

This is just my opinion/vote.
Does not belittle or denigrate any other opinion on this topic.

CSS doesn’t need to be on multiple lines; most folks just do it that way to make sure you can see what’s going on since it shows the “class” and then the “css” as separate pieces.

This is why when a style sheet is “minified” it’s one long line with no line breaks πŸ™‚

Try via FTP to rename your plugins folder xplugins.

This resets/disables all your plugins so you might be able to login.

Note, before doing any updates *always* check for issues, like Yoast 3.6 has problems. Just because “an update is available” doesn’t mean you need to do it NOW. Also good to turn off automatic updates to avoid “sudden breakage.”

And keep copious backups.

Best way to update from old version to current version is via FTP. Seriously.

simchris

THis sometimes happens when pasting into WordPress from external file; not theme specific typically.

Try changing to the “visual” view or the “text” editor view, to see if paragraph tag actually there or not. Also sometimes plugins like auto linking stuff, or ad insertion stuff, or “shortcodes” can mess up the paragraph breaks.

Had this issue with photo recently on one post, could not figure out why, in Newsmag. Had to end up manually wrapping photo in a <p></p> tag set to get it to space properly with the alignnone class.

Not sure that helps in any way, just some feedback.

Hey, Alan
yes, somebody did do that here recently, and it’s someplace in the past 3 months. I think it might be part of the thread I had started prior to our server crash shenanigans. I think my thread was for Newsmag, but this might help

https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/facebook-comments-2/

(btw, if you ever want to “syndicate” my news again as in years past, just let me know; now that we have the “original source” thing, the whole duplicate content issue you ran into isn’t the bugaboo it was when syndicating our press release stuff)

Looks like something you added as an inline ad or similar and then removed the file:
