Not like the world will end if I have to see that notice forever. ๐
Yes, but you will note unlike other messages, even in your screen shot there is no (x) option to remove/dismiss the message, so it’s stuck there in the plugin list ‘forever’ which is a bit intrusive since not needed unless actually using the TagDiv mobile plugin. We have already had an AMP setting set in the AMP plugin since the ‘official’ AMP plugin launched, and do not use a TagDiv theme for the AMP endpoint. Si an option to ‘dismiss’ that message would be helpful. ๐
Hi
you are correct; in case anybody needs to know this. I do now remember doing a search/replace in our old style.css, basically doing search/replace for this:
font-family: 'Open Sans', arial, sans-serif;
and replacing with our desired font stack.
You can mark this as resolved. ๐
Hi
the custom font settings panel won’t work as system fonts are built in to the browser based on OS so that *no* local or remote fonts are loaded. Basically, same as selecting Georgia, Times, Serif — except full stack of system optimized fonts.
I know I asked this 5 years ago, but would be great to have this common “system font stack” added to the drop downs for the fonts, vs simply Helvetica neue, sans-serif, for example.
Trying to avoid hacking too many core files so that updates are possile, unlike our old setup.
A function to “add” another font selection in the drop downs, would be optimal solution?
In case there is such an option.
If not will do the CSS hack.
Thanks!
Thanks! ๐
We ran into this on one of our sites which went all the way back to WP 1.6 (!). We had so many photos, it was impossible to download site via FTP. So, what we did was, make zip backup of size via server panel. Then we set the thumbnail settings in the main WP media panel to 0 for the sub-sizes. Then we turned off any sizes not being used in the theme itself and killed couple redundant sizes. Then we used the regenerate thumbnail plugin to basically kill all the existing thumbs, and regenerate only those we had setup moving forward. So, we ended up with about 5 per story, vs nine or more. That took overnight to run, but wow, killed about 100,000 image files! Your mileage may vary.
AHA! *doh* ๐
Does that setting also impact presentation in RSS feed?
I’ll try and see wassup on that.
Thanks!
Be sure to check if you have an AMP plugin running as this will add redirection code to things like content.page/amp and this will update the htaccess file — also any redirection plugins that might have an automatic setting running to automatically update URLS.
Make sure not using any ‘nulled’ plugins off the web and not from the WordPress.org repo.
Also good to download the file via ftp, and inspect it. Resave with linux line breaks unless windows pc, make sure saved as UTF-8 format. Set permissions to read only, then check error logs to see what is trying to write to it and failing with read only permissions. (Cannot be corrupted if set to read only, vs write permissions need to be on to alter it.)
Also note Google no longer requires AMP for inclusion in some of their platforms. Many publishers are pushing back on AMP and redacting it and redirecting AMP endpoints to normal page/posts. Only benefit for AMP is when you have slow site on mobile. Otherwise it has turned into a bit of a money grab for Google to load your content on their servers and track all visitor activity without normal tracking methods. Kind of scammy, really. We have started removing AMP on our 15-17 year old news portals. Just food for thought.
After 2 years using auto ads; my input here would be that be aware that auto ads will dump ads above your menu bar, in middle of story lists in sidebar, up to five times inside your story making photos a bit wonky by having sometimes more ads than article images, and a slide up from bottom, as well as issue making bottom of page 20 feet long below your footer which should nest to page bottom. In process of updating our sites using newsmag to new version (still using late 2018 version!), but will be going back to manual insertion of ads in preferred locations, we choose, to not overly ‘pollute’ pages making them almost unreadable. However, I did make an extra $300 last year from the ad pollution, but it pains me to look at my own articles right now. AdSense putting 20 ads on page is why ad blockers are now so popular! Just some feedback. ๐
Also make sure you go to ‘settings’ about in Chrome to ensure updated to latest version. I have all sorts of weirdness with Chrome when there is pending update. In chrome you can also do F12 to get to the console view to see if page is generating some error that needs to be addressed in the CSS, or something not loading properly. ๐
Often best solution with newsmag is to make top and bottom sections full width with css, the have content section centered, or as default…this gives illusion of a full width site and will not break all the template blocks which are not full width responsive.
I think you have to ‘activate’ the module you’re using, in order for the correct image to display for that specific module in the home page layout. See the image / module settings in the newsmag control panel/settings. Without the ‘module’ image activated, no correct images for thumbnails created.
AMP is mainly useful if you’re looking for a simpler, pure mobile experience for your information; kind of like the WordPress default themes. The idea is to make page load faster in places with slow internet, slow mobile connections, etc. — there is no inherent ‘better’ reason to do AMP vs normal desktop responsive layouts, unless you have very slow server and are unable to pass Google Lighthouse mobile/desktop tests for best practices.
In our case we use Newsmag desktop theme for desktop, ipad, and mobile. We use the AMP plugin as fallback for Google to serve that simple version to those on slow connections. AMP is something Google invented to cache popular content in the cloud for slow phone connections. Really not intended to replace ‘normal’ pages, site layouts, and almost nobody actually doing that unless a simple blog.
SEO is about pagespeed, best practices, optimization for loading elements, and the like. You can test your site using the Chrome web browser by learning to use the ‘console’ to see if your site is horribly slow — in that case AMP might be worth looking into as default format to serve, but it is not ‘better’ for SEO than normal pages. Having both normal pages and AMP format pages also does not hurt SEO as Google knows one is the ‘canonical’ version and one is ‘alt’ version.

PNG is better to use these days as it scales very well unlike GIFs which are not responsive, in most cases.
If you’re trying to do animated logo, try looking into animated PNG files (APNG), which are relatively new (I did my first animated GIF89a image Spring 2005; while animated PNG are far more recent).
There are dedicated programs, and I think if you use Photoshop, you can export from a timeline animation.

In my experience these issues happen when Yoast is updated and Google happens to crawl. I still get the ‘unable to index page due to robots.txt’ error with Yoast for stuff like /site/wp-admin/index.php — which Google is too stupid after 17 years to know not to index the admin folder for wp-admin. I usually just hit the repair or whatever button in email, then do the view page, and that usually clears it as no such page. This is one of several random search console issues you can kind of avoid. Stupidly, Yoast used to have a ‘change number of xxx per page’ in sitemap, which you could change (e.g., from 1000 to 999) and this would force Google to revisit your sitemap stuff — now, you kind of just have to do ‘resubmit sitemap’ from console to clean house periodically. At least that has been my experience. ๐ ((I don’t work here.))
Licensed copy for use with the theme. Not separate standalone license. The bundled version only gets updates when theme updated.

Couple of options:
a) Are you getting this message?
Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.
You might have stuck maintenance mode
b) “Service temporarily unavailable” may be issue with hosting provider, cloud provider. You may need to login via your FTP software or hosting panel, and rename plugin folder to something like pluginsx – then see if you can login to admin or not.
If you can login, then rename the plugins folder back to plugins.
Did you also update the plugin(s) for theme same time updating theme?
Also be aware that Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. all routinely have issues ‘pulling’ your image, regardless of *any* OG tags, due to timeout from your server for the file, or general overload at the exact moment you share something to FB. Often doing “refresh share attachment” a couple of hours later may be necessary. Long time known issue with rich media, unrelated to any theme, site, etc.
Ha. Doh. Not as smart as I think I am. Totally blanked on looking in the plugin folder for that, as used to be part of the core booster files in early days of that (I was a beta for the booster plugin; and have not used bakery in years and years).
YES!! This was the value (based on the classic decade old WP-PostViews plugin we’ve used for over 10 years now as the original plugin for this):
static $post_view_counter_key = ‘post_views_count’;
static $post_view_counter_key = ‘views’;
Anyway, THAT was the hook I needed – thanks. ๐

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Hi
we had to upgrade to PHP-FPM 7.4.13 for a security thing; will Newsmag 4x latest work with PHP-FPM 7.4.13.
Old version of Newsmag 3.1 (my ‘hacked up optimized version’) still works with PHP-FPM 7.4.13 btw. ๐
It is; however, the theme folks don’t manage your website or hosting setup. That needs to be managed for *any* theme using WordPress, which allows for local hosting of fonts, proper hosting setup for PHP and image capabilities or other things that any large WP theme requires to work. I think there is a ‘requirements’ check in the theme panel someplace, and also a checkup panel in WordPress itself now, so that might be a good first place to double check all your ‘baseline’ capabilities are in place.
I don’t work here, just long time user ๐
AMP seems to be working, fyi

Are you submitting mobile end point or AMP endpoint ?
e.g., for AMP
