In our case, once we got rid of the width of the box, the button moved up to right. We might have removed the line break if one was added; been a couple of months since I suffered through that 🙂

I also gave up on the nice ‘overlay’ search results option and ended up with the “normal page of results with our logo” option. Trying to style the overlay results was almost impossible to sort out and Google’s docs are somewhat worthless.

as you can see, I think we gave up and finally just decided to hack the code by doing bad practice of putting the style inline. We’re using bootstrap 2 on our main business site, hence the existing classes for buttons.

Well, since it’s not part of the theme, and the CSS classes are part of Google’s code; the only way to “over ride” that is by putting some kind of CSS in the custom CSS box. Kind of up to you to solve, but “official” support might offer to write code for you.

You could also create a custom tag and perhaps set that as the data source for the content for a block with just one item.

I think what we ended up doing for the search box was setting a fixed width like 200px or something.

Not technically a bug …
it’s designed to be a visible menu for related items from the same topic; so if you had entertainment, and then sub categories like fashion, film, food. music … those would show there. When you only have main categories, it shows all of them.

Trick is to architect the site based on groupings of related categories, for example, here we have several sub categories of “music” and so only those related music categories show on the visible topics menu

Probably a method to “disable” that might be good for those who ONLY use single top level categories. However, many large magazine sites do “group” related things together in order to make navigation easier. So, I think that was the idea here.

1) you would need to look at rendered page, find the class for the box, then add to custom CSS with the !important tag. On our business site we were not using WP, but using Bootstrap 2, and so ran into same issue with the default form CSS. Took a bunch of tries to figure out how to get it to be short, and search button at right. If I had the trick for this theme handy, would totally share it.

2) I think you can change the lines for the theme from grey to white to “remove” them as the simplest fix.

You would need to add CSS for the class being added by Google. Nothing to do with the theme.

You should look at the docs on styling the Google search elements. I just had to do this on our business site. Bit of a pain. Basically you have to create a class which sets the width of the search box, and then add that class to the box element for the search box.

Google doesn’t care about change of theme; however, the “arrangement” of links can impact views from robots which spider pages based on links around the pages (sides, bottom, etc.).

Also be aware Google is rolling out new versions of Penguin algorithm on a weekly basis in December, and so you may see fluctuations in traffic. It should “stabilize” after a few days.

They are further deprecating sites which are mostly duplicate content; pulled from other sites/sources, or sites which just parrot major sources and or post videos from YouTube without a great amount of ORIGINAL content.

you should try to download the fonts optimized by @handiso and see if that solves your problem. “Most” people don’t see that issue, only some, and it’s not clear why, regardless of browser/platform.

I think you would have a few issues with this, based on my own past experience. We use isotope on our business site (not using WP for main static content).

1) obviously you would need to upload the .js file to the theme folder, or your server
2) you would need to call the .js file for it to actually load the script
3) then you would have to place the elements into the theme file(s) where you would use the library.
4) this kind of thing doesn’t always work well with child themes, from my own experience due to the css redirects and such.

Most people using isotope with WP are building their own themes and not patching it into a theme which already has a complex page builder, framework and shortcode system.

Likely try turning off all plugins except Visual Composer, and see if your panel works; then turn on plugins one by one to see which one is not compliant with the rest.

If using IE11+ or Chrome, you can also see the “errors” from your admin page by pressing F12 to load the “console” which is a great way to debug issues.

if you “recently updated your theme” – it’s possible not all the files were properly written. Did you delete old theme folder before uploading new one? Did you turn off all caching and plugins prior to updating?

I would probably re-install Visual Composer as a first step.

Or, if using a CDN or cache; try clearing/resetting that to capture updated version of the site content.

groovy 🙂 Hopefully this solves it for the others with similar issue.

I know people have turned that off, from the “Newspaper” theme forum; you might do quick search there while waiting for reply from official support folk.

Another possibility is editing one of the post “styles” – like maybe taking post style 3 template and go in and change the class names to something like “fashion header h1” or whatever, then only use the fashion CSS for the one template.

Dunno. My head hurts now. 😉

I don’t think you can do that as each “stack” loads a custom set of CSS files. In theory, you could copy the CSS from one stack for the categories and replace that in the other stack … but there’s no way from the theme admin you can choose one “stack” for category-x and a different stack layout for category-y.

Of course you can build up a custom style sheet of some kind to do that, but horribly complex.

If the clases are different it might work; but if class names are the same across stacks … you’d be reloading the CSS for “header style 4” on one page, then again next page in different category, and the browser caching would likely end up loading wrong CSS for each section.

Meaning if
page 1 = header 1 = font x, size x, padding x
page 2 = header 1 = font y, size y, color y

Problem is header 1 as a class would be confusing across multiple pages where the class name is the sane but the CSS is different.

Kind of a cool idea, though.

I’m sure “official support” will have a better answer; I am just giving some feedback based on my own experience using the tagdiv themes the past 12 months. (And I could be wrong!) 🙂

Theme doesn’t control search results on the results page, sadly, this is the classic “crappy results” built in to WP, AFAIK. There are some “better results” plugins in the WP plugin repository.

I have downloaded @handiso’s files, and replaced the 1.1 version theme files for the four font files.

specifically

newsmag.ttf
newsmag.woff

Biggest difference is that handiso’s version of the svg file is almost twice the size (e.g., 43kb vs 25kb).

So, if those who were having the “I can’t see any icons” issue — if you can *now* see the icons on the above page…. then handiso’s solution is the correct one.

I can see the icons on ALL browsers, across WinXP, Win7/64, OSX Mavericks, OSX Yosemite, iPad iOS7, iPhone iOS7, and the devs always see icons too, so there is some oddity someplace — possibly a file encoded as text vs binary, or some other oddity.

If you still cannot see the icons, then it’s likely a unqiue situation on your particular machine.

I would almost go so far as to “suggest” that some kind of shadow on the H1 tags for both of these templates might be a nice “default” even if set as 1px 1px 3px black .

You can specify categories, or you can specify a “featured” category. I think you can also use a tag. I don’t think you can have both “category-x + only items tagged featured in category-x”

— if only using one category like “books” — you could likely “tag” those featured items as something like “featured book” and then use that “tag” as the source for the big grid.
