Would it be worth having an official Gutenberg feedback thread in the forum for everyone to raise any issues, or is that likely to create more confusion than it solves?

PS: in addition to my previous post, Gutenberg seems to add 21px of white space to the bottom of every page, as well as at the top as previously advised.

I’ve been playing with it a bit this morning on our test site. So far my only real problems are:
– the Gutenberg plugin seems to have added about 21px of white space to the top of each article, below the main menu. Here’s an example page:

– H5 & H6 seem to have disappeared when creating a new post

– there’s a new ‘sub-title’ option, which may be designed to replaced H5 & H6, but I can’t style it in the theme panel to match the rest of my formatting.

Other things I’ve found are related to plugins rather than the Newspaper theme.

Thanks Simion. It’s not very important that we style the pages that way, so it’s not critical that it’s addressed anytime soon. We were just wondering whether we were doing something wrong or if it was just not possible.

The issue we’re currently having with the sticky sidebar using cloud templates is as follows:
When we have the sidebar in a normal row, it works fine, like this page:

When we try to put the same sort of layout into an inner row (so we can have a coloured background to the main row for contrast), the sticky sidebar stops working, like this page:

I assume that we’re doing something wrong, but we can’t work out what it is.

Our only other major problem at the moment is that we are having so much fun using the TD composer and cloud templates to create that many new template designs, we can’t work out which ones to actually use for the final version of the site! So far we’ve created about a dozen that we like, and just playing with the different elements is giving us more and more ideas…

Hi Simion, thanks for your reply.

Seems to be a plugin conflict – disabled everything except TD Composer and it now works again. Will update everybody if/when I work out what’s causing the conflict.

To update everyone else on this issue, in case it helps:

We tracked it down to our server not having mbstring activated for PHP 7.0/7.1/7.2. I had no idea what this even was, but Bogdan was outstanding in patiently working through the different potential issues until pinpointing the trigger for our blank pages.

Update: I have a live site running Newspaper with Visual Composer and several other plugins, had exactly the same issue when updating from PHP 5.6 to PHP 7.0.

Pages built with Visual Composer go blank on PHP 7.0 yet posts work fine. Revert to 5.6 and everything works perfectly.

This site does not have TD composer or other TD plugins installed (apart from social counter).

I am currently trialling the Ad Inserter plugin, which allows you to enable/disable ads on specific posts and for specific devices.

Hi Catalin. I wasn’t providing a negative report on the design – i like it. What was confusing me was that it doesn’t work on single columns on a desktop display, but it does on a mobile (in terms of the large text behind the title text). This was confusing me and we couldn’t work out why it wasn’t displaying as expected.

Our designer decided that he preferred Block 10 anyway, so we changed to that one and are very happy!

We did get eventually it working earlier this morning after fiddling with different page settings, but didn’t like the effect overall so we have changed it to Block 10 instead!

What I also didn’t realise is that Block 13 doesn’t work on narrower (1/3) columns or sidebars on desktops and tablets. It is confusing, because it does display correctly on mobiles.

I use the following to block ads by category:

.category-miscellaneous .td-a-rec, .category-miscellaneous .td-g-rec{
display:none;
}

Where “miscellaneous” is your category name.

This hides Google ads (td-g-rec) and all other ads (td-a-rec) from displaying on inline and sidebar placements, but does not hide header and footer ads.

@kindle4 I’ve done that before. Thought I had been really clever and had managed to improve site performance dramatically. Took me about a fortnight to realise I’d been an idiot!

Just as an update to this for anyone else having similar issues, we are now running WP Super Cache and Cloudflare and Google News thumbnails are working correctly!

Calm down dude. Visual Composer is notorious for breaking websites and clashing with other plugins, so the developers will not endorse a newer version until they are 100% happy that it will work with your theme. The theme or associated plugins may need modifications to work happily with Visual Composer 5.0, or it may be that the Visual Composer developers have made some errors and need to introduce a 5.0.1 update for it to work.

In the meantime, the latest version of VC (4.12.1) works just fine. If you want to live on the edge and risk your site breaking, go ahead and buy the latest version of Visual Composer for yourself.

AdSense may serve a smaller ad than the maximum size allowed by your settings if it pays better. This can look odd if you have a 300×250 ad in a spot where you have specified 970×250, but it shouldn’t ever overlap your content.

You should be able to drop your AdSense code directly into the copy. Switch to text rather than visual entry, and drop your code in. Worked fine for me, and I can’t code to save my life.

Thanks Emil. I have also been running WP Rocket, which I am currently swapping over to WP Super Cache and Cloudflare to see if that improves performance, so hopefully I will get it sorted eventually!

Just to add my two cents to this:

Both Newspaper and Newsmag work perfectly well with AdSense. If you are having problems with AdSense compliance, it is most likely that you are entering ad codes incorrectly or you have a conflict with a plugin somewhere that is causing the ad code to display incorrectly.

I have run AdSense (and others) to the maximum limits allowed by Google with Newspaper and Newsmag for more than 18 months, with over 3 million page views in that time, with no violations or warnings from Google.

AdSense allows you to be quite lazy and just insert responsive ads into any of the tagDiv ad slots and it will automatically select an ad size which fits. Or you can use a specific ad unit size code, and then use the theme to re-size the ad for different devices. Experiment with different ad units and formats, as well as synchronous and asynchronous ads, to find out what works best for your site.

No theme can be bulletproof in guaranteeing perfect compliance with changing policies from Google AdSense, but the tagDiv themes seem to be better than pretty much any others out there.

No, I just happened to still have the download package on my computer, so followed the normal upgrade process but using the older version of the .zip file.

Just my 2 cents on this issue. I have been experiencing gradual traffic decline for the last couple of months and have been trying different things to turn it around.

Came across this thread yesterday, and so I reverted my site from Newspaper v7.4 to 7.2. It has been just over 24 hours now, so very early days yet, but traffic improved within a couple of hours and has been consistently up by about 10-30% in hourly reporting on Google Analytics compared to the same day last week (which is what I always use, as my traffic pattern is generally very consistent across the week). GTmetrix and Pingdom scores are not significantly different, nor is site speed.

That seems a big difference in traffic compared to the normal variations I see, and I am not rushing to conclusions because it is only a day of reporting. I will continue to monitor it and report back in a week or so. I am tracking my most visited pages, which are all 1-4 years old, so I am not basing my comparisons on new material.

OK, thanks Catalin. It might be worth looking at as an improvement for future releases of Newspaper and Newsmag, as the article top ad spot is potentially very lucrative for site owners – but at the moment, it can only be filled by low-paying ad formats.

Yes, I would like the ‘Post template style 1’ ad to replace the ‘article top ad’ on all post styles, not just Style 1 (I use other styles but not Style 1).

I put the code into the Post template style 1 box and disabled the article top ads, but it has not replaced it, so no I have no ads.
