I have used the newspaper theme for around 2 months now. I have two main issues that I hope can be resolved:
(1) the customize and widget sections of the Appearance section in WordPress have been exceptionally slow with Newspaper. When I am attempting to drag a widget, is has a lag for at least 8-10 seconds. When I am adding CSS, there is also equally a lag. This issue has been from the beginning, i.e. from 2 months ago.
(2) For a week now the whole back-end of WordPress has been incredibly slow. There is substantial lag in all the operations I do.

Notice that problem could have more reasons and not necessarily guilty is our theme. I had this very same problem months ago and it turned out to be a bloated database from bad plugin(s). Should check phpmyadmin to make sure your database isn’t causing it, especially check the ‘options’ table. MANY bad plugins out there.

Thank you for the feedback. I have been in contact with my host, as well as changed a few things in the wp-config.php file according you the guidelines by tagdiv. However, the wordpress is still exceptionally slow with the theme, and the cpu use is quite high, especially when using the widget section. Would you be able to take a look at the website? Unfortunately page speed is a very personal issue and it depends on lots of things starting from the host you use all the way down to the content on your site.
If you use lots of complex elements, you need a more powerful host to handle the ajax calls. We cannot help in that decision though. Please use gtmetrix as well as google page speed insight and follow their advice for page speed optimization.

I have wordpress too and one of the biggest culprits of slow speed are bad plugins and bloated database. I would check those as well as the regular speed optimizations. Try disabling plugins + testing to see if it affects speed, and also check database table called ‘options’ in cpanel > phpmyadmin for bloated amount of rows. Some of these plugins can really slow down the site or leave behind unwanted stuff in database even after uninstalling them.

The widget and CSS-coding part of appearance have been slow from the beginning of installing the template, i.e. before any accumulation of plugins. Perhaps tagdiv could take a look at these two sections alone. I used another template prior to Newspaper, and widgets and CSS-coding worked well then.

Usually a bad memory allocation causes slow downs in the back-end.

Max_execution_time is yellow with a value equal to 30.
The following is green:

Just a follow-up: The Max_execution_time is marked yellow and with a value of 30 even though the php.config is specified with define( ‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’64M’ ).

max execution time and memory limit are two totally different things.

I have now changed the php.ini file so that max_execution_time is set to 60. However, the widget section is still incredibly slow. The system status for this variable is now ‘green’. Again, the widget section has been very slow from the installation of the theme.

Hi,
Please disable all plugins except the page builder, clear cache and reset cdn files if you use it. Please also check any custom code you might have added to the theme panel or the theme files. If you use a child theme, please switch to the main theme to make sure it does not affect the proper functionality of the theme.
