Hello,
1. Big slider work only on full width(3 columns) you can use the Homepage blank template and add the Big slider with Visual Composer.

2. Use Homepage blank or Homepage – bg – no article list and add 2/3 + 1/3 columns with page buiilder. first column 2/3 add a block like you want to display the posts and use “Load more” as setting. http://screencast.com/t/8oDdcRyAQoW and use the next columns 1/3 as sidebar, add from page builder Widgetised sidebar and select a sidebar that you want to use.

3. To add another banner you have to add it directly in code, in v3 the file is in parts folder, the files with header…php(depends what style of header do you use)

4. The space can be reduced via CSS, use inspector from Chrome or firefox and add your custom css in style.css or in V3 we have a section for custom CSS.

Thanks for the message!

And one more: reducing the space between header and main content, ex: between main nav and big slider

Hey!
I chose to use Amazon’s CloudFront since I already have Amazon account and they bill my card on file (I think December was $0.98). CloudFront works well, aside from this pesky issue with Font Awesome 4, which I’m getting same issue from boostrapCDN (free) — sometimes the icons won’t load in IE10/11 or Firefox (both on Windows) for no good reason.

Anywayyyyyy….. in my case I’m using S3+CloudFront since my brother’s company (in the educational software business) uses it, a lot of folks have been testing running WP sites virtually entirely in their cloud (!), and I’ve got a nice app called Cloudberry S3 Explorer which works as both bulk FTP, header settings for expirations, ACL/Public settings, and CloudFront invalidations. So, it was just kind of the best choice. Right now only loading CSS, JS, fonts, static images (logos, little things like BBB bug, etc.). Not yet using for WP.

Upshot … I think folks would likely spend the 30-cents vs free to “test” both for speed.

In my case I did test couple of things against CloudFlare and where I’m at there was couple of msec saved, so seemed worth it to just use Amazon since I know they’re not going to disappear, or get bought by Google and squashed or anything else with other cloud stuff might throw out there. I’m also inherently suspicious of anything “free” as that is no business model, and I need reliable here today, here tomorrow setup for our main business site. So, $1 a month to count on it, vs “free” and might be gone without warning. Was easy choice for me.

Haven’t yet done anything with the WP stuff as waiting for Newspaper “3” if it will have classic WP ‘header.php’ file where I can just point a bunch of the CSS/JS stuff at the CDN without hacking something that will then need re-hacking in 2 weeks.

I also did some research on some articles around and since I don’t need SSL off the cloud (after all I have my own damn server!), this was food for thought:

It’s actually easier to do if you use an SEO plugin like YOAST which has a feature to put both the Google and Bing verification in the code for you, along with managing elements for social media (OG tags), and related. We used to roll our own in house solution from 2005-2013, but now have standardized on Yoast for the SEO header stuff. Works well.

Hi Guys,

First off, awesome theme. It is the only theme on the market that got close to being able to present our content in the way we want.

I’ve been working on creating a child theme based on Newspaper for a Hawaii-based travel agency for the last couple months. I have a few questions about best practices and what I might be doing wrong in my child theme creation. As comprehensive as the theme is, there is still need in our case to make changes that are not possible given the theme options. 🙂

It appears to me that the theme is really a framework in itself and doesn’t play well with the child themes concept. Is this a correct assumption?

In my child theme I have parts/archive-header.php that was copied from the same directory in the Parent. This file works as expected. Now I want to customize the header on the home page. I find out that that is parts/header/header_style_2.php. So I copy that file to the same directory in the child, but only the html in the document renders, not any of the conditional code result. It seems like this is because the Parent Theme’s classes are not able to be called from there. Which, for instance, is why $td_customLogo = td_util::get_option('tds_logo_upload'); is empty so the logo does not render.

How do I include the parent frameworks’ classes in my child theme?

Second question: I have edited the td_module_1.php(and a few of the other app/module files) to add my own custom_post_type_render() method to that class that I call from the child theme loop file. Is there a way that I can do this in the child theme directory so I do not have to modify the Parent Theme files?

Thanks a bunch,
Tom

It couldn’t hurt. Point I was making is that Google is going to filter search results for the best match for a specific topic. On most sites these days there is little unique on the home page relative to a page such as “services” or “pricing” or “our staff” where Google would focus on the page related to that topic. Meaning, you don’t want Google to show your home page for your services, you want them to show your services pages when somebody searches for “Anna’s 1986 Whacky Widgets.” 🙂

Additionally, if you’re not building a newspaper layout, you can build any type of page and the title of the page is an H1, or if using a custom taxonomy simply use H1 tags for your header text which you type into the page itself.

That is a clever use of the H1 tag on Joost’s home page:
<h1 class="site-title" itemprop="name"><meta itemprop="logo" content="http://cdn.yoast.com/wp-content/themes/yoast-theme/images/header/logo_x2.png"/><a itemprop="url" href="http://yoast.com/" title="Yoast">Yoast</a></h1>

I’m still surprised they’re (Joost and co.) are not using white space removal and comment removal to optimize the HTML delivery of their pages, which would enhance page load and caching.

Still, an “option” to put an h1 element on the logo div only for home page as a clickable option, might not be a bad idea!

THANKS Marius but it did not work 🙁

Still just header and menu on startpage. No background pic, footer or content. All other pages is perfect. Maybe Ill try to build a new startpage – just hoping it will not happen again

Hi, the “next” pages work on both of my sites running theme with only the core set of plugins (no Jetpack!), plus using AddThis, AdSense ads, and no insert of ads in content (only header + sidebar).

Usually this “error” is from modifying a page, using a child theme with a bad addition to the functions file, or a conflicting CSS element from another plugin.

On one of my old themes, I also had another navigation plugin running from a prior theme and forgot to turn that off, and so it broke it.

Not sure if any of that helps. But it does work properly on both our test magazine site and a live production site (2004 site updated for 2014 with this theme) without any trouble, which implies a local issue vs a theme specific issue.

On another theme I found going to the admin > settings > permalinks and resaving the permalinks actually helped. Which is bizarre, but there you go.

For three hours today my site develop.alltomtrav.info was all WHITE. I tried to switch theme from Newspaper to Twentyeleven and it worked. Then I switched back to Newspaper and all WHITE again. Now after three hours the site is back (partly) it seems all pages works but not my start page. It only shows header and menue. NOT the background, the page and the footer. Weird weird…. 🙁

I removed all ads from every widget and theme options. There was some in the header.php and footer.php which im unable to find after the update. My link URL is here: http://tinyurl.com/ctmhtrn

Is it possible that those ads stuffed cookies or cached in the site somewhere? I do use the total cache and clear it often.

Thanks in advance!

Hey
I want to display only a list of the posts of a specific category with nice looking pictures and a little exerpt of the text. Like here: http://www.simplyshredded.com/category/training/chest

I`ve created a site for the header menu, on this site I display only the different categories with links to them. Like this: http://www.simplyshredded.com/training-articles.html

But when I link to the categories I don`t get the results displayed like here: http://www.simplyshredded.com/category/training/chest

How can I format this?
PS I don´t want to link directly to a specific article only to the category which should show the list of posts within this category.

Thank you

Chris

Hey guys, I updated to the latest version of theme and not I am unable to find the ad code that was placed in header.php and footer.php. The ads are still running and I want to remove them but they are no longer in there? Is there somewhere else that they may have moved since the upgrade?

Hello,

I need Header Menu (main) to be different in each category, and if possible, edit different menus from the wp admin Menu options.

Best Regards

Hello,
Add this in style.css

.td_980_resp .td-full-logo .td-grid-wrap {
    padding-top: 0px !important;
}
.td_980_resp .td-full-logo img {
    padding-top: 0px !important;
}

and make the logo at 996px if you want to be full on width.

For slider add this in style.css

.td-page-wrap .iosSlider-col-2, .iosSlider-col-2 .item {
    height: 321px !important;
}

Thanks for the message!

Hello,

Thank you for answering.
Actually, I want my logo to be at the top but I have a space above it. I deleted my background so you can see better : http://criss-colfer.fr/test/

Also, on the slider the images are not cropped correctly.

Thanks. 🙂

Zeus…
I also updated my expiration headers (see the pagespeed thread sticky top of forum) for htaccess to add more time for .js files due to the wordpress comments js file normally expiring in less than one week. I had it set at 2.6 days; Google now wants a week and will generate error on pagespeed insights for that one pesky file!

Hey there.

Please make it possible to show a full size header again.

I used to have this:
http://denkfabrikblog.de/data/screenshot_full_header.png
And now, the update to 2.3 left me with this:
http://denkfabrikblog.de/data/screenshot_small_header.png
Please include the option for a full width header.

Thanks in advance.
