Only stuff I’ve had to deal with are:

1) setting site URL in the WP settings to https
2) reset logos in panel to https://
3) search/replace dbase to set any “placed” images to https vs http (e.g., if you place an image in middle of post using media manager, it is “in the text” as http … that’s part of the body post, and doesn’t update
4) consider setting /paths/to/ in the wp-config.php to optimize that

Any placed local ads or graphics in widgets also need https: obviously

You might also try using some good plugins like wp-optimize, make sure your images are optimized (e.g., not loading 5MB image for home page vs 50kb), check to see if you have a member sign up script or contact form being abused (e.g., do NOT use “send auto reply” for forms as they can be used for people to send spam, by simply putting in somebody else’s email and putting spam topic on form, boom it gets sent to somebody from YOUR system); check the error logs for your domain via your web hosting account to see if you can narrow down a specific plugin causing the issue.

Some “third party” plugins are *not* fully compatible with WP 4.0 and sometimes you may two plugins doing same thing … I often see people using Yoast to make sitemap while also running a sitemap plugin, etc.

That might not apply to your situation, but just some feedback. Not having any issues with theme and the “recommended” plugins on our server, and we’re running some high usage stuff like auto thumbnail and thumbnail upsize, etc.

Well, basically it is serving up an image at smaller size and so caches the “scaled” size as part of the “rewrite” images module.

Sometimes it doesn’t work if the optimized image would be larger in size than the original, which is funny since I usually optimize stuff very much in the extreme.

But:

ModPagespeedEnableFilters resize_images

This attempts to resize any image that is larger than the size called for by the width= and height= attributes on the tag or an inline style= attribute. The original image is replaced only if the image file is smaller after resizing. Image resizing is lossy by nature, regardless of image file format.

Note: It also strips color profiles and metadata even if strip_image_color_profile and strip_image_meta_data are disabled.

Note: If both resize_images and resize_rendered_image_dimensions are enabled then resize_rendered_image_dimensions takes precedence.

ModPagespeedEnableFilters insert_image_dimensions

This flag inserts width= and height= attributes into tags that lack them and sets them to the image’s width and height. Note that this can cause image stretching or shrinking if CSS rules specify only one image dimension (see Risks below).

So, one of those things to play with for super advanced users, like removing width=500 height=375 and simply using style=”width:90%;height:auto” can do some interesting things.

Eventually this stuff will be built in to everything, since rewrites on the fly solve numerous responsive design issues.

AND: we just now got mod_spdy and mod_pagespeed working together!!!! WOOHOOOOO!!! Doom will ensue! (kidding)

For your site did you
1) setup the gzip/deflate for your server to serve compressed content / mandatory
2) did you add expiration data in your htaccess (Apache) file or similar for NGINX / mandatory
3) did you optimize your images for best size/speed
4) did you use functions.php to remove ?=123 version queries and set better image optimization default for WordPress; then perhaps regenerate thumbnails
5) remove external elements as needed, such as using social media counters, jetpack, or other systems which call on outside websites for data, slowing page down?
6) did you optimize your database using wp-optimize

Items 1 and 2 are good for at least 20 points alone.

You can optimize delivery of google fonts by loading css from your style sheet

Check site with gtmetrix to see what server elements you have not addressed, since you should have at least. 80 if you have setup server side compression and htaccess elements, etc.

Tagdiv speedbooster plugin helps with the js,css stuff.

Sure, if you want to pay me to replicate the steps, would be happy to. “My” guide does not include those steps, as I NEVER edit the core code, and I only use compliant WordPress functions to optimize the functions.php file and well known suggestions for htaccess directives, etc.

I never made those instructions you refer to, so I’m going to pass on any help. Sorry to have offered; I likely only added to the confusion. Sorry about that.

I’m sure one of the other contributors here using that “hack” might be able to help. Likely you will want to post the question in that thread, as the hack you’re looking to do has nothing to do with theme support, or my suggestions for PageSpeed improvement.

Sorry, I can’t be any further help on this topic. Perhaps the person who suggested that hack might be able to help – try posting in that thread for help from those of us contributing suggestions for pagespeed improvements. Maybe the person who posted the hack will follow up for you on what he/she did to use that element you’re trying to use.

And again, the tagdiv speedbooster code and plugin has been updated for September, so the July hack may no longer work. But I’ve already said that, so I’ll stop talking now. 🙂

Yup. I actually changed mine to 50 recently on couple of sites which have photos and no illustrations, but 60 is what I’ve used for quite some time and works perfectly for my needs. Using 60 removed the “you need to optimize your images” warnings from PageSpeed. 🙂

Heh. I actually skip every couple of updates and then do my list of minor hacks; not really much of a way around it. Also notable is that you don’t have to update unless it’s for a security patch, resolved feature issue, bugfix, new feature, etc.

Usually what I do, vs using child themes, is keep a cheat sheet, much like you are doing in your list above, and then open my cheat folder, and my new version folder side by side, then go through each item and modify the new version for my fixes to keep them.

Tedious, but once you have your site the way you want it, you don’t need to get crazy about “oh no! there’s a new update!” — if your site WORKS, in some cases no reason to update every day. I have a site with Woo Canvas, and I skip every 5 updates until I see a need to do so, or if it fixes some wonky responsive issue. Site works, big whoop if they updated it last week.

Often you can look at the “what is new” summary, and decide if that works for you.

I skipped the 4.22 update, and 4.3 and will update on 4.3.1 of Newspaper. But that’s me.

You can use a child theme, just remember for some CSS and javascript things you may find a gremlin which you cannot track down for any specific reason other than you are basically running two themes at same time.

Another benefit of using ONE main theme, is you can also more readily optimize your wp-config.php file to include direct paths to your folders and know they will always work.

If you notice every thing on my server side is in green and in the 90’s that make my server FULL optimize for the best performance… with all this ur WP will be running great and ur server as well..

The most important plugins you need to even get this close to getting those scores..as follow

1.tagDiv speed booster

2.Speedbooster Pack Plugin (Don’t use the feature Disable all above CSS options on mobile devices) all the other features can be use but it all depends on ur site.

3.WP Super Cache Plugin this work better with the theme and don’t cause any issues with the theme code.

4. Optimize Database Plugin http://wordpress.org/plugins/rvg-optimize-database/

5.EWWW Image Optimizer Plugin

6.CloudFlare Go to “performance settings tab” and make sure you choose every thing in there…

In Photoshop for my main images I generally start with a quality factor of 30, and a blur level of .2 … I then try going down to quality factor of 25 and sometimes blur of 0.22. And for some images I push it down to 20, and have gone down to 15 when I need to if the image supports it without looking too awful. When going to save for web, make sure “progressive” is chosen and NOT “optimized,” and don’t embed meta data or color profiles; only embed meta data such as copyright if really needed.

If the image has text, you will need a quality factor of 25 or more, or it may be illegible; if you have images with RED then you will generally need a quality factor of 52 in order to not get horrible artifacts due to the inherent flaw in mpeg/jpeg compression from last century.

Thanks for answering Christopher. As I have already tried the above mentioned methods, I will no reupload my images again manually. Before that, I planned to optimize them with Photoshop, any suggestions? How can I compress this images, only loweing their quality?

You may want to try testing with http://gtmetrix.com/ as it will give you more specific info on images, and other things related to your score, as well as often create optimized image versions for you.

Most of the methods you’ve mentioned work for the majority of those with optimization issues.

Yes, I have already looked at it, but my main problem are the images, I cant optimize them. Any other suggestion to accomplish this?
