The mobile score is better ;). But in the screenshots appears empty the mobile screen :S

In w3 total cache i only check the Page Cache in the general settings tab or i need make more changes in the other tabs?

I use http://cssminifier.com/ for my style.css and works but i realized another pagespeed test ando mobile score was 59.

What can i do to improve this? The thing that appear in the list are of jetpack pluging, contact-form, and things of the theme. The screenshots in mobile test only show the menu with any format, and in the desktop text the screen was empty.

I compare the source code of the theme demo with the souce code of my page and its too different. :S. I think this theme is too complicated to config correctly to improve the speed. Its necessary a guide to config the plugins like the theme demo, with the same options, then each user could comment your personal issues. If in the demo has been changed .htaccess for improve the speed and changed a w3 total cache, i think its necessary a guide because the speed of theme is one of best things that it have. If you make a bad config of this items, the theme is slowly like another themes.

Another question, i update the theme with the patch folder, is better reinstall all theme or is the same? I tell this because one of the updates was “clean code” and in my <head> there are a lot of code, more than in the theme demo and another pages that the people put here in the other posts :S

Yes! Image optimization is only ONE part of the process. You need to ideally optimize your images prior to upload for smallest size, and then set the default compression.

The htaccess file stuff for expires and also making sure that gzip/deflate are enabled on your server are also hyper critical.

Read back through some of my long winded posts for some great tips 🙂

I have done everything as it says. Add code “add_filter( ‘jpeg_quality’, create_function( ”, ‘return 50;’ ) );” and run reg.thumb plugin. After that I run g. pagespeed, but the score was the same as previous mobile:52 / desktop:67 and I still get the message about optimazing images. It looks that they still weren’t optimized.

But then I tried another thing. I changed my expire headers in .httaccess with your expire headers you have posted in this post: https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/what-is-your-googlespeed-value/ and WOW!!! after I run g. pagespeed test I saw complitely diferent score: mobile:72 / desktop:82 — THAT IS FANTASTIC FOR ME!!! (I am on shared hosting for 5$ a month) — and when I test my page speed with google I have everything enabled and all ads on the site, so that new score is fantastic for me!!!

NOTE: I highly recommend adding a custom compression amount to photos for WP as I’ve found that some of the pix created by theme with default WP compression level are waaaay to big.

For example on our site which is not yet optimized,

The hack to add the compression amount down to something like “50” is someplace in my prior posts. Recommended!!!

yes, I use BBedit on Mac and TextPad on PC, as my text editors, but basically you can also use notepad (not wordpad), or whatever the plain text editor on Mac is these days (I always want to say simpletext).

SO: create new blank text document with same name as the file you plan to minify (filenameXYZ.js), put into a folder or wherever you store stuff on your computer, and leave it open …

THEN, open the file from Newspaper theme folder you want to minify in text editor, select all (CTRL+A) and copy and paste into the minifier site, apply – then copy the minified text into your blank document then save. FTP up the minified version to over-write the original in the theme folder (you should have backup, or your themeforest install as backup obviously).

So, you’re replacing the original *.js file in the theme folder with your minified version.

Easy. Certainly there are plugins that might work for you, too, but I’ve not used one lately so can’t suggest best one beyond the discussion in the pagespeed topic.

Reload your page. If you’re caching the js files obviously you need to clear cache. Both on site if using cache plugin and in your web browser to see changes.

Remember you would need to do this each time you update the theme. But it really takes under a minute to do, for those who need it done. Try it.

if you’re using my pals in Canada at Gossamer Threads, aka “GTMetrix” — a great tip many people entirely miss is that you can run a page score on your site, and it will tell you if CSS or JS need to be optimized BUT THEN IT WILL GIVE YOU LINK TO DOWNLOAD OPTIMIZED VERSIONS!!

put in your site URL, or a “post” URL – then under stuff to fix it will have section on JS optimization, open little sub box, and it will show you files which “should be optimized” and will have little text link next to each one. Download/save the optimized version, upload via FTP, and done.

glad all my little rantings are helping somebody 🙂

“fonts and FOUT” Subject is top of mind for me at the moment as I’ve been toying with the difference between loading Open Sans off the Amazon CDN (where was able to compress the stylesheet more than the Google version is, for those who’ve run into that item on GTMetrix for scoring; meaning I basically am loading a minified and optimized version of the Open Sans font stack off the Amazon CDN for better performance/rating), vs just loading from Google directly. I get FOUT on my page right now with the CDN, and sometimes IE won’t load Font Awesome off the CDN at all (even with proper CORS rules) – whole ‘nother topic of pain there. Gave up and am loading Font Awesome 4x off our own server since IE 11 just randomly doesn’t load it and then all my icons are blank spots.

Anyway… “right now” if I go to a test page for site redesign (NOT using WordPress btw), I see moment of “italic” font then regular font. IE will load the italic font first for some reason so I see FOUT from italic to normal font. Stupid stuff (damn IE!!!).

I’m actually hoping to use the Google font CDN, and then the upcoming stable version of mod_pagespeed has a nifty feature where it will inline only the needed CSS for the browser being used.

I see a FOUT in IE11 on Win7/64 with a 32GB RAM machine on a 85mbps FIOS fibre connection. Page loading on dedicated server in Class A datacenter (Softlayer/IBM) with common elements like logo and main CSS coming off the CDN. Blah blah. Meaning, it’s not loading off anything with slow load times.

Starting to just “live with it.” Annoying as hell, though.

Browser “should” cache the CSS on second page view. I have my cache in browser set to clear on close so I can re-suffer the view of a first time visitor EVERY time. Hence the annoyance can really annoying. Google “FOUT” to see the couple of years of whining by others, if one cares to. 😉

* you won’t be able to fix the stuff you’re loading off other sites like the .me.uk domain which is responsible for many of your “rating errors” — you’re loading images, CSS, JS and such from many other sites, and these all slow down your site and don’t meet the current optimization standards.

Most of the issues with social sharing are issues with the actual social media sites and their code which must be loaded by the theme to do things like “call” number of likes — that isn’t done by the theme. So, some things are impossible to “optimize” as they are not PageSpeed friendly. This also includes AdSense, ReCaptcha, YouTube, etc.

“the best social sharing codes” are those provided by each social media outlet with async loading; but the elements are still loading from that other site which you have zero control over.

For best PageSpeed you would need to use something like a single pill button from AddThis, or create locally hosted icon images which only “post” to the social media sites and have no interaction such as showing number of likes/shares — all that data coming from those sites like Twitter, FB, and G+ will cause PageSpeed issues.

Just some info on that. I’ve spent a ton of time on this issue and there is no perfect solution, unfortunately.

so by upgrading to a VPS with the settings you recommend, the warnings for Slider Revolution will magically disappear?

As I mentioned by disabling rev slider i’ll jump to 100/100. But then my menu is no longer working. It seems to be enabled on the demo site and I’ve followed the other advice.

I think the query is for using web-safe fonts which don’t load remotely off Google’s CDN.

Some of us wish to use only web-safe fonts for faster page load, and not having to load “fancy fonts” from Google which can be tricky to optimize for PageSpeed Insights.

This is typically the reason for wanting Arial/Verdana, and/or Georgia, Seghoe UI, Trebuchet, etc.

I’m waiting for 3.01 to install, personally, so don’t have any specific advice on how to customize the fonts to web-safe, although that was on Radu’s confirmed ‘to do’ list.

I’ve actually optimized every single in the theme. Even backend 😛

It’s only because the theme is so great I’m pushing for KBs. I know my site is more than good enough to run as is. But no one likes red flashes on validators 😉

Best tip on slider, is optimize the heck out of the images used.

Also be aware that the mobile ratings have all gone down as they are even penalizing for the “tap area” for things like breadcrumbs now … our business site just dropped many points due to the breadcrumbs being “too small” on an information page. Sheesh. This is what I’m working on now. The mobile stuff I think Google is going a little overboard on, and also “assuming” everybody is going to only view a website in vertical mode vs landscape and not rating it both ways. They also assume everybody has the smallest phone from 3 years ago, vs the larger phones everybody is getting now, or the higher resolution of retina, etc. If you’re suddenly “under 80” again — on mobile — it’s not just you. My shtml/ssi based site which was fine, is now not due to this kind of shenanigans.

So, make sure you’ve done all that. And adding the elements to your htaccess is good practice for ALL wordpress sites (all websites in general really), and the theme can’t fix issue with web hosting, caching, headers for expiration, et al.

Note also in his demo he’s not using adsense (Google Ads), recaptcha for comments, some social media hogs, or plugins that abusively insert additional not-needed CSS files in the header. SO, generally for your own speed optimization, presume to turn anything OFF which inserts bad behavior stuff (like, ironically Google’s own ad stuff much of the time).

But the page Radu has (linked above) tells you the basics of what he did to optimize the theme.

Make sure you’re not in “compatibility mode” in IE10/11 for your website. That mucks with all sorts of things, I found. May not be the issue, but it broke all sorts of things for me. And, if your host uses mod_pagespeed or if you’re using caching be sure to “disallow” your wp-admin and themes folder from being “optimized” or “modified” as that can also break stuff. Mine still works, so usually good idea to backtrack on any new plugin installed which inserts any hooks into the page posts/admin (like a form manager, etc.). Some plugins don’t create unique IDs for their “hooks” and then this breaks other plugins.

Looks like you had some change to your permalinks and haven’t done the redirects when you changed the permalink structure.

The theme doesn’t create duplicates or revisions. You might check your database and make sure you delete all revisions. You can also ensure you don’t have some kind of plugin running which connects to your social media when you do a “preview” when posting (meaning the plugin “runs” when the page loads, even if in preview — I had one of those once upon a time which was a pain as it would ping the social media stuff even for a “preview” …)

None of that may apply to you — but from my experience with theme there isn’t anything in the core code which creates additional versions of content– it’s just a theme, and doesn’t create POSTS or revisions.

If you have a module or plugin which puts some kind of tracking ID on the end, that might cause the issue too, where some kind of redirect was supposed to work, but doesn’t.

Not sure if that helps or not.

While debugging you may want to simply turn off all the plugins and temporarily revert to the twenty-twelve theme and then WATCH what your site is doing. Then turn on plugins one by one and see if something weird is happening — may be a rouge/hacked/bad plugin. This isn’t really a forum for general WP debug, but more theme specific help.

Using a plugin like WP-Optimize may help to “clean up” all the junk in your dbase, if you’re not already doing that, too.
