Just as an FYI,
the 1.7 version of theme was causing CPU spikes to go from our normal load of “0.9” to “1.1” up to “270.0” … (!) … considering our old server prior to Jan 2014 would have completely crashed at “60” — that’s pretty amazing in and of itself. But, server was pushing out “high load” warning emails hourly, and php status going from green to red every hour for a full day since switching on 1.7.

Going back to 1.6 immediately resolved that issue.

Normally I was skeptical of the whole “theme is crashing my server” issue, but this did in fact happen with us, and my server is about as hot-rodded and streamlined as currently possible with Linux/Apache/CentOS/Plesk-Parallels + mod_pagespeed and mod_SPDY, opcache and php optimizers; 8+ cores of XEON CPU and 32GB RAM (enterprise class server).

Still blown away server didn’t crash with “270” spikes, and email still worked, and other sites worked …. but normal server response overall also went from 0.3 seconds to 1.6 seconds and longer.

Obviously, you know there is an issue; but this is just anecdotal info for anybody else running into a WTF? moment.

After the update my pagespeed did even get faster. I am using w3 total cache and cloudflare. I disabled the lazy load functionality because I could not see the images on my Windows 8 phone. My server configuration is Linux, CENTOS 6.6 x86_64, Apache 2.2.29, PHP 5.4.36, MYSQL 5.5.42-cll, Perl 5.10.1
Maybe this helps the developers to eliminate some issues. Kind regards.

The pagespeed and loading time of my site is very slow with V 1.7! My Bounce Rate increased more than 9%!!

When you’re planning to fix it? I supose that you’re going to release a V 1.8 right?

I don’t want go back to the V 1.6. I made a lot of changes and test of plugins for upgrade to V 1.7. Don’t want to do the same for the downgrade.

Obviously the quick and dirty method worked
(trick is to delete via filemanager on server; then upload via FTP)

So, 10 minutes … and I just switched back on Disqus, photo new items right side, third ad, and the pages are 10x faster at least … maybe 20x faster…

so… shazam… there you are. In our case 1.7 does NOT work well with all the snazzo-riffic hardware, bandwidth, mod_pagespeed and other stuff we have on tap. 1.6 literally rocks.

I do believe you are correct in that some other things related to php queries and whatnot are baked in someplace, as that is HUGE difference.

from theme panel, click home page button – 2 seconds in IE 11 Win7/64. Previously 20 seconds … soooooo….

I just turned off whole bunch of stuff like “related posts” and removed on ad from sidebar, removed new items from footer 2 (replaced with subscribe), removed images from sidebar for new stories …

home page comes up in 6-9 seconds, vs 1-3 for the other site.

Crazy. Same server. Same php memory. Same mod_pagespeed settings.

And the 1.7 site is loading the gravatars locally, too … still hideously slow.

Okay, all on the same site listed above, I’ve tried these plugins with 1.7:

Zen Cache – 62 Desktop PageSpeed Score
WP Super Cache – 62 Desktop PageSpeed Score
Gator Cache – 62 Desktop PageSpeed Score
WP Fastest Cache – 62 Desktop PageSpeed Score
W3 Total Cache – 68 Desktop PageSpeed Score
No Cache – 62 Desktop PageSpeed Score

On all tests I had the speed booster plugin enabled. I also ran tests before and after browsing the site to populate the cache.

I find it interesting that the only plugin that gained even a single point on the page speed test was W3TC. I hate this plugin. It’s constantly taking me to the plugin dashboard when I want settings, has annoying popups on the admin, and slows down the back end of any site it’s installed on.

Why are none of the other plugins reporting any difference at all? All of the caching plugins besides W3TC had the same effect as having no caching plugin installed.

I like the lazy loading on the new update, but if I have to entirely sacrifice my choice of compatible caching plugins to have it, I’d rather not. Can I turn the lazy load off to test these again?

Something is wrong if the only caching plugin that has any effect is W3TC. Before the 1.7 update, all of the tested plugins listed above worked to varying degrees with NewsMag. Some were better than others and every single one got my page speed score of the site as it is now over 80. None of them even hit 70 with 1.7.

Sorry to keep going on and on about this but it’s a MAJOR issue. You’ve already got customers ditching the theme above over it. What can be done about this?

As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, WP Fastest Cache is the highest performing caching plugin for tagDiv themes. I have yet to test the other caching plugins on 1.7, but this new update is no longer compatible with WP Fastest Cache. I only mention that because this plugin works on many themes, meaning it is compliant with WordPress standards and NewsMag now affects the WordPress core somehow.

1.7 dropped my pagespeed score from 89-93 to 62 and below. There were no other changes to the site. I updated the theme plugins by deleting the old plugins and installing the new plugins. As for the theme, I replaced changed files from the patch folder.

I’ll update here when I’ve tested other caching plugins with 1.7.

Well on mobile devices “responsive” images have to be resized as there is now way of knowing what the actual thumbnail size might be if you have 3 images side by side in a grid; well the width of that grid might change depending on the device.

You *could* add more image sizes to your functions file to build those additional sizes; keeping in mind you might end up with 20 images per raw image (!). If you have the storage space or using CDN, might be worth it.

Or, consider using something like mod_Pagespeed with your hosting provider — which is what we do — if 50 people request a new image size, scaled from larger image — it MAKES ONE and caches it. Wicked cool.

Or, ignore that suggestion and go run the official Google PageSpeed Insights check and if they don’t bug you about those scaled images, just ignore it.

appreciate the how to. It’s working pretty well on my first upgraded site. Only one instance of waiting an extra second or two for a featured image to appear; seems okay on my iPhone 6 also.

Still, I know we did try using lazy load a year ago with mod_pagespeed, which has this as one of the inherent functions since it’s modifying and caching images on the fly, including webP format conversions where useful for mobile — and we got unpredictable results with some stories which had multiple images on page, where if you scrolled down, sometimes after xxx seconds the images below the fold might or might not appear … and it was up to about a 20% “might not load” situation.

So far I’m impressed I’m not seeing that on my first 1.7 site

You might need to make a “STICKY” on the lazy load option, as I know with some weird combination of things, which I ran into last year, sometimes images just time out on the lazy load on long pages. But again, so far your implementation is rocking as far as I can tell. Good job folks!

Only bug for me so far is the one odd LI element thing in the WP default recent posts widget with double space at start of each item (or rather line break).

I will be trying the upgrade in a little while once I have some free time to make our various customization changes and then do the uploads via FTP.

On one site I recently did an “in place” upgrade where I had no users logged in, and was surprised it worked going from 1.4 to 1.6.

But will update my own upgrade (mis)adventure when I get there today for anybody interested. My usual issue with forgetting to turn OFF all the plugins, and turning off the mod_pagespeed FIRST ..
