I asked this question over on the themeforest comments section but the answer really what I was looking for. Below is the question and answer from there.

Me – Is there no way of having the thumbs of the homepage latest post still be high quality for mobile phones like iphone and androids. Even after I regenerated the thumbnails they always show up grainy on mobile phones.

Support – Hi,

On mobiles they’re set to width: 100% because there are many devices with different screen sizes, you can set the images to their original size using custom css like this: – http://screencast.com/t/DHEEDFsnZQe

Updated question. I want to keep the width still 100% on mobile but the current size thumb for module 11 is not sufficient on mobile phones as it becomes super grainy on mobile screen with high ppi. If I change the thumbnail size to a 600 width for module 11 how can I still keep it within its container for the desktop and 100% for mobile?

Unfortunately that does not work. The images are still broken. I changed the thumb size in functions and then regenerated thumbs.

Hi,

Please make sure that you set a feature image for that post replacing the video URL and setting the post to standard format and check if the feature image is set as I have also checked this and haven’t found any issues with this: http://screencast.com/t/yvgevVyO2lK
If you still don’t have any feature image as a thumb please make sure that you disable all plugins, empty cache then regenerate the thumbs again and check for this by uploading an image and setting it as featured image.
Please let me know!

Thanks

Hi,

To do this you also need to edit the functions.php file and change the add_image_size function with the thumb size you need, like this: http://screencast.com/t/u2h99TI4P then regenerate thumbnails. Please make sure that you make a back-up of your current theme installation then make this changes to the main theme and check if this works.
If it doesn’t work please make sure that you use the child theme provided with the theme files and also make sure that you the child theme right: https://forum.tagdiv.com/child-theme-documentation-newsmag/
Hope this helps, please let me know!

Thanks

@cityslicker444 @masbay93:
at step 3: select all icons, make sure you select only icons imported from newsmag.svg.
you may try the fonts I regenerated, if you want.

Likely you should use the method of adding the compression change line to your functions.php file, turn off smush-it, and then do regenerate thumbnails.

You can find the compression setting in my posts in the pagespeed topic but here it is:

add_filter( 'jpeg_quality', create_function( '', 'return 60;' ) );

Add that to bottom of your functions.php file in the theme folder. Then do regenerate thumbnails. You can also set that to “50” if all the files are being reduced in size from your original images; if any images are being enlarged while also using thumbnail upscale plugin, leave it at 60.

Hey, the bigest problem is when smush it compress images i still get some images like 700 kb and i have 4 or 5 of them (for every resolution) so on the end because of one image i lose like 3.5 Mb (700 kb *5).
I dont know where is problem because in media panel on the same image i see only 100 kb but in ftp menager there is the bigger one… So i suppose that “regenerate thumbnails” do some extra images and smush it dont smush them :/ but i dont know… and it is not on any way good because i have hosting with 6 gb and I used 1GB in first seven days…

Thank you, Danijel.

Hi,

Please try this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/force-regenerate-thumbnails/ Use it and see if it also removes the not needed thumbs.
You could also try to comment the images sizes you don’t plan to use and that the theme creates in theme’s functions file: http://screencast.com/t/iA5FdUdGw2 and regenerate thumbs again.
Hope this helps!

Thanks

When I try to regenerate thumbnails, it tells me that none of the original images sources can be found, though I can see them. Here is what the images look like in the media editor.

http://www.digitalempathydesign.com/images/ss2images.png

I cannot add widgets because there is no place to add them to in the appearance > widgets section, not to mention the only widgets I see that are available are the default wordpress ones. I see no extra Newspaper widgets.

Hi,

You can find all thumbs sizes for all modules in the functions.php file: http://screencast.com/t/7w89LMscp
To add another you ca use this method: https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/how-to-set-up-a-bigger-pics/#post-17911
Please make sure you regenerate thumbnails so that the changes to take effect after you make the needed changes.

Thanks

Hi,

You have to regenerate the thumbnails, each theme uses different thumb sizes, check this guide on how to do this – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-fix-strange-thumbnails/

Not sure what you mean with the widget issue, please provide more details. Normally the widgets can be added on the Appearance -> Widgets section – http://screencast.com/t/7TCJnbde

Thank you, Emil G.

Hi,

As Christopher write this happens because of the cropping function and to somehow avoid this you could an image near to the aspect ration of the thumbs in which you want it to look well. You can read more about aspect ratio here: http://digital-photography-school.com/aspect-ratio-what-it-is-and-why-it-matters/
You can also read more about function which creates the thumbs and WordPress cropping here:
1. http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/add_image_size
2. http://www.davidtan.org/wordpress-hard-crop-vs-soft-crop-difference-comparison-example/
Also note that if you decide to change some thumbnails sizes you’ll need to regenerate thumbnails again in order to apply changes.

Thanks

Yes, but is there a way to show original images rather than cropped images?

I know we get these type of problems after changing themes. The slider images are also weird first. but after using regenerate thumbnails plugin, the slider images got fixed but the images in block and modules remains the same.

I tried changing the thumbnail size in functions.php from 180×135 (module 10) to custom size, but it never changed too.

Thanks.

Hello,

The thumbnails are getting zoomed in/cut off than the original featured image size. I used regenerate thumbnail, but still it remains same.

Hi,

You mean like the one we have in newspaper theme which let’s you chose if you want the feature image cropped or not? I will add this on our todo list and we will consider it. Meanwhile you can do it hard coded and regenerate thumbs changing it.

Thanks

Hi,

In order to use the theme you need to regenerate the thumbs for the images and when you have so may images it supposed to take some time to generate all thumbs, unfortunately I can’t see any other solution for this, we recommend though to move your site locally then use the plugins regenerate the thumbs then upload the thumbs folder via FTP.
Hope this helps!

Thanks
