Failed theme update

Greetings, the situation goes as following: I’m currently doing the maintenance of a website which has the Newspaper version 9.2.1 theme, with the idea of updating it to the newest version. When I did the procedure via FTP, following this guide https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ step by step, the website gave a critical error, reason why I had to reestablish the files of the old version.

Let me tell you about some precedents of the website that could be useful:

-The website was created by another web developer, with whom there’s no further contact. He was the one who originally installed the theme, but due to the lack of contact, we bought the Newspaper once more to do this update.

-The theme’s folder (../wp-content/themes/Newspaper) that the website currently has is considerably bigger in files and weight than the folder in the new theme.

-The website also has a child theme, where we find the majority of personalization of css and new customized templates. Nonetheless, I’m not sure that all updates have been directly made to this child theme, since I’m not familiar with the work done by the previous developer.

For us it’s important to update the website to find it in the best condition possible. How should we proceed? Can we update this theme with the difference between versions? Should the child theme connect with no problem to the updated theme?

I await your response.

Hello!

First of all, please make sure you have a backup done and then you can update the theme and the TagDiv plugins also.
Please take a look for this advice before updating: https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/action-required-please-read-how-to-update-to-the-newspaper-theme-v-10/
I recommend you to make a backup and update plugins and the theme via file transfer, so that you don’t face any error: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/

The child theme is not overwritten by the update. An issue for that could be the compatibility of your child theme with the new version of our theme(if you use some files which were updated). If you’ll have some custom modifications directly in the theme files, then better save the code and replace it after the update.

Make sure that all the requirements are done as you can see here: https://forum.tagdiv.com/requirements-for-newspaper/

We recommend first to deactivate ALL plugins except tagDiv ones, also if you are using a cache plugin, deactivate it and see the results and then you can update the theme.
Check this guide also: https://forum.tagdiv.com/general-options-may-interfere-newspaper-theme/ and make sure that there is no any issue which can block any js.

Thank you!
