Here’s the short version:

It seems to work for templates in the child theme root. Even more strange: I removed the functions, and the templates still appear. I have no idea what’s going on.

But we are not there yet. The templates in subfolders do not overwrite the standard pack plugin. For example:

child-theme/parts/header/header-menu.php

These templates don’t work in the child theme.

You asked me for the credentials, and I sent you all information last week. I’ve never received an answer. And yes, I checked the spam folder. I don’t talk 24/7. But please note that I posted my question 10 days (!!) ago, and I still don’t know how to proceed. This is not acceptable. We paid for support!

I see a lot of replies within hours concerning topics that I would call nice-to-have-problems. My problem, on the other side, is very severe and looks like a significant bug. I posted the issue a week ago. So far, I haven’t got any helpful answer. This is pretty poor for premium support.

Let alone that the changes in the theme structure (due to Themeforrest) will cost my customer a lot of money.

I added both files: header-menu.php and header-style-1.php. Didn’t change anything. Actually, even a custom page template does not work. It simply does not show up in the page editor. See my other posts:

I have the same problems. For test purposes I tried /child-theme/parts/header/header-menu.php, but the file does not override the standard file. How come? What am I missing?

Same here. Please let us know how to create and use the good old template files. I don’t need a composer, and I don’t need the cloud library. I just want to put a php file in my child theme folder and done! Version 9 worked like a charm. In version 10 none of my templates are working anymore. Yes, I updated the code. But the templates only work if put in the parent theme folder. Which is not what I want, of course.

Sorry, it was an update from 8 to 9. Bad enough. But then I updated to 10. This was even worse. You don’t have to answer this post Please, see my other posts here and here.

I use the same plugin, but it just doesn’t work. Honestly, I don’t care very much, since I would have to create a cloud template from scratch. This might not be a big deal for an experienced Newspaper user. But I have never used Newspaper, and spending even more time on this problem would be crazy. I’m going to charge the customer 5 hours of work for nothing. She won’t be amused, I guess.

I’ve just found out that the rating shortcode does actually not work. It shows zero, while there is a rating of 3. In addition to that, the composer is probably the worst editor I’ve seen in my life. Gutenberg is top notch compared to this. I guess, I’ll have to quit. Troubleshooting took me at least 4 hours. For nothing!

Yup, same here. I’m still struggling with editing the templates. The composer is not quite intuitive.

Found it! “Column text” is a good choice. Boy, is this annoying!

How did you do that? I tried the standard shortcode that comes with the ratings plugin. No luck. I wrote my own shortcode. No luck. I used an inline text block in the composer.

If I understand you correctly what you are saying is to reinstall the theme from scratch and hope that the child theme customization you made will work.

Unfortunately, you’re wrong. Modified files in the child theme will not work anymore for files that were moved to the plugin folder. You have to replace those files there. After every update, of course. This update is an epic failure.

The cloud templates don’t have PHP or code files, they must be built/edited in the composer. You can work on them with the composer in the front end.

Child theme templates are for developers and not for rookies. I need a single line of additional php code in template no. 2. The frontend composer will not help at all. Or can it handle php code?

Sorry, but words really fail me here. And please add a giant disclaimer to the theme description that it can not use a child theme properly. Again, look at the Satollo newsletter plugin. You can override plugin template files putting theme in the extensions folder.

Copy/paste the same textblock again and again is so disappointing. A theme that can’t be properly modified using a child theme is useless.

It isn’t safe to modify main files, one of the reasons is that the modifications will be lost when the theme and theme plugins are updated, so they will have to be made again.

Sorry??? This is exactly what a child theme is meant for. Of course, this is safe. It’s not a fire-and-forget solution. Now and then, you have to update the modified files. Usually, this is not a big deal when minor mods are added. However, it’s the best solution we have. And it is for good reasons the fundamental concept of WordPress themes.

This could be a solution. I tried it, but didn’t really understand how to work with cloud templates. I wasn’t able to edit the source code. How can we switch from visual mode to php editing mode? And honestly, I don’t have time to search for that. Please work on your documentation.

I don’t have the time to dive into the Envato requirements. But this is the first time in 10 years working with WordPress that I have to deal with such a problem. Theme template files should be located in the theme folder. If they really have to be moved into a plugin, provide a solution for overwriting them. However, I’ve never seen this before. So, maybe you should revise the theme structure. Anyway, it is a kick in the teeth for all paying customers. What about customers who spent a lot of money for customization? Everything is lost or has to be moved to the plugin folder which is not update-safe. So, maintenance costs will increase significantly.

Please, don’t repeat the same answer again and again. Plugin files can be overwritten update-safe (see Satollo newsletter plugin). You should provide a solution.

You could edit them there, but the modification will have to made again after each update.

I’m pretty sure you know, that even plugin files can be overwritten? Have a look at the Satollo newsletter plugin, for example.

That would be the case, the child theme is quite limited after the recent update.

Thank you very much for killing one of the most fundamental features of a WordPress theme. This is probably the worst update next to WordPress 5.0 introducing Gutenberg.
