Are you not able to reproduce this behaviour on your test site with the custom field box and the iframe code above?

Because I am still running Newspaper 12.3 on my site (since it is a podcast site, the player is a crucial part on the single post pages, I’d rather not update till it works all right).

But if you cannot reproduce this error on your site, then it might be a plugin conflict or something else on my side…

Hi, thank you for your reply. I use a text type custom field that contains an iFrame code from Simplecast to display the Simplecast player above my posts (the box is inserted in a Newspaper post cloud template).

See example in newspaper version 12.3 here:

It has worked all right in previous Newspaper versions including 12.3: the Simplecast player displays in full width of the custom field block on the page.

When I update to Newspaper version 12.3.1 the iframe player’s width gets limited to like 300px, although the custom field box is set to auto-width.

Here is an example for the iframe code:

Thank you, it seems like Jquery Migrate has temporarily solved this problem (interesting thing is that I swithced it on then OFF but the site now works even after I switched the plugin off).

Calin, can we expect an update of Newspaper theme in which you address these jQuery and WordPress 5.5 issues?

Just updating this, maybe helps troubleshoot the problem.
I have installed jQuery Migrate Helper, switched it on. Then TD Composer threw a Service Unavailable error (before installing jQuery Migrate Helper it opened but showed the loading wheel infinitely). I switched the plugin off. And lo and behold TD Composer now works!
I don’t know what is the reason behind this behaviour of the theme.

Errors on my sites look very similar:

Uncaught Error: Syntax error, unrecognized expression: undefined<div class=”tdc-sidebar-separator tdc-sidebar-text-separator”><span>Flex Block 3</span></div><div class=”tdc-sidebar-element tdc-element” data-shortcode-name=”td_flex_block_3″

etc.
etc.

For me it started after I saved elements. (I did not have them before). After I saved elements, TD composer will not load and I experience similar error messages as above.

As I have read about this problem it seems it is now a genearal issue with disqus’s latest release and their javascripts at their side. Seems like it ruins other plugins’ js routines.

(I have two other sites I had to disable the disqus plugin, on the latest I have still valid tagdiv support as I bought it a few weeks ago.)
It seems to me their javascript destroy some of your routins (e.g. the ‘more article box’ and the lightbox coding).

well, I was too early to rejoice.
In fact disqus started to throw all kinds of javascript errors in the browser console and breaks some of the site’s functionality.
Apparently now there is a conflict between Newspaper theme and disqus plugin. At least on my sites 🙁

at the moment, I do not use AMP. seems like the format has many limitations and a lot of problems with various plugins.

I think the easy solution would be to have an ‘excerpt’ element in the single post template cloud library editor besides the ‘subtitle’ element. This element is now missing from the set for some reason. If we had it, it would be easy to build a custom single post template with the excerpt under the featured image.
(It is true, on newspaper sites it is somewhat a standard feature to have the excerpt as a ‘lead’ before the main article text — not always, some editors think that is old fashioned, some think it is a must — it varies from newsroom to newsroom).

Thank you, that was a nice and thorough description, probably I panicked here for no reason. Just to make sure, I have tried this disallow thing in the robotics.txt for that very file in the theme folder and will see where it goes from there.
I am really sorry if I wasted the time of developers with a not too theme specific problem here. But maybe the thread will be useful for those who experience similar problems.

ok redirection comes from the difference between …/folder and …/folder/ path difference, probably not an issue.
Still it is interesting Google Search Tools would list this as a serious issue only for a few days (and it coincides the exact time the site has disappeared from Google search results)

as for temporal solution I tried adding this code to robots.txt:
Disallow: /wp-content/themes/Newspaper/index.php

but I am not sure it will not make the problem only worse.

I am plagued with the same error. Memory limit on the WordPress install is actually 512 MB. So this symptom that keeps showing up now — as I can see — at many of your users has a different cause.

When I try to ‘fetch as google’ the url wp-content/wp-themes/Newspaper in Search Console it gives me the information that it is ‘redirected’.
Checking the redirection givces the warning that that the address it is redirected to is unreachable. (It seems like for me that there si no difference in the original and redirected url. Also, I have not set a redirection for this url.)

Please fix this, my site has already fallen from Google search results because of this.
