Hi,

With my old theme, when a reader submitted a post with their name (custom field ‘user_submit_name’), the post would appear with the ‘user_submit_name’ appearing as the author name for the published post. I just moved over to the Newspaper theme, and the author name in this situation is ‘Guest Poster.’ e.g. http://www.israellycool.com/2015/11/15/reader-post-whats-in-a-name/

How can I make it that the ‘user_submit_name’ appears as the author name?

Thanks,
David

Hi Alin,

When I have two authors then both guest authors are displayed in the byline, which is great. But I want to modify the code so that only one author from the guest authors of the co-authors plus plugin will be displayed in the byline if I have only one guest author added in the backend. Currently with this code –http://pastebin.com/chADk3Xw I have one of two things happen:

1. Two guest authors are displayed in the byline
2. If I have only one guest author added in the backend then author who published the article is displayed instead of the guest author.

I hope this clarifies what I am trying to accomplish. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Thank you!

Hi,

Is there anything I can add to this code – http://pastebin.com/chADk3Xw so that only one guest author will be credited in the byline? The code works great for two guest authors, but if I have only one guest author then the admin who posted the article is credited and not the actual guest author.

For me this only works if there is more than one author. What should I do if I only want one guest author.

I have been trying to paste the text after the <?php in the same place on the Newsmag single loop but only the real author (not guest author appears). Any suggestions?

No problem. Here are a few steps to get it working.
1. Install and activate this plugin Show/Hide Menu If you want to use icons in your menus, install and activate Font Awesome

2. Go to appearance>menus. click screen options at the top and make sure to tick the css classes box. Now create 2 menus with the same name like THIS. One is going to be your logged in tab, the other when logged out. Once you have those 2 menu items added to your menu, click the options arrow on the menu item, and where it says css classes, put “forguest” in your logged out tab, and “formember” on your logged in tab.

3. Add submenus as you want, make sure you put your login and register submenu items under the menu marked as forguest. Here is what my logged in and logged out looks like in the dashboard PIC

4. If you want to use a icons in your menu, add a second css class to the menu. put a space after “formember” or “forguest” and add the css class for the icon you want to use, the font awesome plugin has to be installed to use them. HERE is the full list of icons and their css classes that you can use.

If I missed anything let me know

BASIC SEO TIPS:

Note that Google rolled out new version of PANDA recently. They continue to refine placement, and are putting emphasis on mobile friendly, ORIGINAL CONTENT, โ€œanswers to questions,โ€ https capability, pagespeed insights, sitemaps, and the usual stuff still relevant:
a) inbound links from organic sites, not paid text links or text ads, help placement
b) blocking bad links from โ€œbad sitesโ€ such as low quality scrapers โ€“ you can disavow bad sites (we do this with sites like โ€˜searchnakedโ€™ which had thousands of links to us)
c) proper schema markup
d) limit junk posts (e.g., youtube video and one sentence โ€” is not original content)
e) limit content you โ€œstealโ€ from other sites then link to them as source โ€” write your own version, get your own photo; that helps your ranking
f) site structure matters; good navigation, prioritize the POST over categories, tags, etc.
g) donโ€™t sell text links, avoid popups, interstitials that block content loading for Google bot
h) READ the free Google guide to best practices for SEO
i) write original headlines โ€“ check your headline to see if it already exists; do something different!
j) posts should have at least 5 paragraphs so it looks like original post and not excerpt of another post
k) donโ€™t use โ€œnext pageโ€ for home page; conflicts with your category indexes
l) update site regularly โ€” updates every 6 weeks shows lack of new content
m) create your own images where possible, vs copying somebody elseโ€™s
n) learn to use your Google webmaster tools (now โ€œconsoleโ€) properly
o) donโ€™t overload pages with too many ad modules from adsense, amazon, other ad system, etc. โ€” too many ads pollutes your pages
p) use h tags for your relevant subheads in your posts, not just bold sub heads โ€” couch your subheads as answers to questions people might ask โ€œThe right way to boil spaghettiโ€ โ€ฆ etc.
q) make sure guest posts are not also being posted on other sites (!!)
r) share the heck out of your posts to social media, but use the social media worth sharing to and ignore the stuff nobody uses anymore (sorry, delicious, diigo, Technorati, etc.)
s) donโ€™t use sock puppets for clicking your ads; paid likes on social media; or similar
t) answer comments on your posts to create dialog
u) make backups of your site often and carefully (!) โ€” if your system crashes, and youโ€™re off the web for prolonged period of time โ€” very bad for SEO after xx days
v) do you have a backup plan if your host goes out of business, or GoDaddy DNS crashes again and your site is down?
w) consider spending a small amount on Google ads to promote your best posts or site on the topic you most want to be found under, like โ€œhorse breedingโ€ or whatever
x) make sure your site is verified with all the top search engines
y) ignore stupid things like so called โ€œranking sitesโ€ like Alexa which are completely wrong on traffic, including their inability to track shortcode use
z) check your site regularly to ensure itโ€™s secure ! Make sure you have security plan. Make sure you have privacy policy on your site.

Hey guys,

I was wondering if there was a way to add the author box to the top of the post under the feature image, so that there is an author box at the top and bottom of the post. As we will have a lot of guest bloggers on our site it would be great to ensure that readers know straight away who has posted the blog.

Cheers
Adam

Does anyone know how to make the guest-authors’ author box show up? Or how to conditionally insert multiple author boxes in version 4?

Hi,

I can’t access code from paste.bin: http://screencast.com/t/N2Sr6rSsX6M
Please give me login to paste.bin or paste as a guest.

Thanks!

I tried the Byline plugin that you suggested, @partnowjess. While it seemed to fill in the guest author information under the title correctly, it unfortunately output the guest author’s name randomly in other parts of the them. I cannot recommend it as an alternative.

@mbasche, would you mind sharing exactly the line numbers that you replaced with this code? Did those this affect the output in the Author Box at all or just the names under the title? And does it handle only registered user authors or does it also work with Co-Authors Plus’s guest authors?

Hi,
I am using F and Q Plus plugin. However, the FAQ in page, it display only the title, but no other information, such as: SHOW CATEGORIES TAGS, SHOW AUTHOR NAME, SHOW DATE, SHOW POST VIEWS, SHOW COMMENT COUNT, SHOW TAGS ON POST, SHOW AUTHOR BOX, SHOW NEXT AND PREVIOUS POSTS.
My guest is because the plugin only take a simple SINGLE post/page without recognizing the option from newsmag.

To solve this probelm, wow can I make it ON by default and not by option in POST SETTING.

thanks alot.

Hi, it seems that you ignored the threat where you’ve posted too. ๐Ÿ˜‰
https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/co-authors-guest-author-and-author-link/#post-14146

The code works in single-loop.php or similiar – but not for author bio

I need to create a authors page – http://www.ghumakkar.com/authors/
What will be a possible solution?

Sorry,

I didn’t read well your post! It is 3:00 am here in Canada. (I should get to sleep). You will find how to set up guest posting for registered users in this post from WPBegginer.

I hope it is useful for you.

Cheers,

This is sadly out of date now that 4 is out, I think.

I wish there were just some easy guide like this:

“So you want to use Co-Authors Plus to have as many Newspaper-theme author boxes as there are authors.

1. Go to your theme editor.
2. Find the file …
3. Find the lines …
4. Replace with / add the lines …
5. Profit!!”

Google has been cleaning house on junk news sites (our news network sites have been in GN since it was in beta many years ago) and getting stricter on what kind of sites they will allow; specifically if you’re just copying YouTube videos and cloning stories from major news portals, stealing images without permission, and not creating “first of its kind” original content, they might not take your content. They also don’t want “made up” stuff like a psychic blog, or things which attack other groups, and they do want to see an editorial staff, content which is not “guest posts” or paid content.

You need a Google XML sitemap, Google Webmaster account, unique URL for each story — traditionally they needed a unique ID number for each story which is why you see those strings of numbers on URLs to most real news sites.

Often done as

site/12345/pretty-url-here/

or

site/pretty-url-here_12345

But they do have specific guidelines you can read – both for content and technical requirements (for example they don’t expect to grab content more than 2 days old, so you need to have “current news” every day once you submit your application). Bylines, proper dates/times, etc.

Also remember that the XML sitemap, and Google News sitemap are two totally different things. Your XML sitemap should be working for awhile (not a brand new site), and you should not ping Google News with your news sitemap until approved.

Hope that helped somebody.

I know of many websites which have been kicked out due to “low quality content” this year.

I have not yet submitted one of our sites running this theme, which we’re still messing with as it’s consolidating 3 ooooold sites into one new magazine (ga-ga.com); but one of our sites running this theme *is* in GN right now, although the site is 10 years old and pre-dates GN. We switched over with zero trouble. This theme is properly optimized for Google News as long as your content is newsworthy.

Does anybody have an idea to put the second (or more) author box under the article.

Hello everybody,
i could made co authors works in post http://www.questeistituzioni.it/cosa-e-la-fatturazione-elettronica-pubblica-amministrazione-2038
but not in home ๐Ÿ™
i put the code by @partnowjess in module 9 (the “last post” in home) but it does not show the two authors ๐Ÿ™
i put this code in functions.php

function hybrid_entry_author_shortcode( $attr ) {
    $attr = shortcode_atts( array( 'before' => '', 'after' => '' ), $attr );
    if ( function_exists( 'coauthors_posts_links' ) ) {
        $author = coauthors_posts_links( null, null, null, null, false );
    } else {
        $author = '<span class="author vcard"><a class="url fn n" href="' . esc_url( get_author_posts_url( get_the_author_meta( 'ID' ) ) ) . '" title="' . esc_attr( get_the_author_meta( 'display_name' ) ) . '">' . get_the_author_meta( 'display_name' ) . '</a></span>';
    }
    return $attr['before'] . $author . $attr['after'];
}

Thank You all!
Just a last thing: which code i have to put in the theme function.php? I put the code by @radu in my module 9 but still see just one author ๐Ÿ™

 <div class="meta-info">
                    <?
//$buffy .= $this->get_author();
$coauths = get_coauthors();
if (count($coauths) > 1) {
    echo "by ";
    foreach($coauths as $key => $coauth) {
	    echo '<a href="/author/'.$coauth->user_nicename.'">'.$coauth->display_name.'</a>';

		// add "and"
		if ($key != count($coauths)) {
			echo ' and ';
		}
    }
} else {
	echo $this->get_author();
}
?>
                    <?php echo $this->get_date();?>
                    <?php echo $this->get_commentsAndViews();?>
                </div>
