WordPress cannot enlarge images; so consider adding the “thumbnail upscale” plugin which will allow stuff to enlarge and crop to fit the theme image sizes (you may have to do regenerate thumbnails also).

basically you have to insert the three div sizes which wrap your link and image HTML
alternately you could use a plugin like AdRotate to insert into the theme template and then load your “ad” graphics randomly for that spot (which is what I do) 🙂

It is normal to see only one image in the library and many thumbnail created for that particular image. The theme creates different thumbnails and different sizes for a single image that are used in it’s modules and blocks. This affects loading times a great deal as the featured image on modules and blocks does not need to load the full size image. Instead it simply loads the smaller thumbnail created for that particular image.

In order to save some space on your server, you can select just the thumbs you want to use from this list and uncheck the others so no unused thumbs will get generated. Then you can use a plugin that deletes the old thumbnails and creates the new ones you chose called ‘force regenerate’

I’ve been messing around with background images. I’ve uploaded different sizes, but I can’t seem to get the image in focus no matter what size. Is it even possible to get these images in focus for different screen sizes? I hope you can give me some more information on this.

Altering the page source using the inspector I can see that the correct images more than fill the blocks.
If I disable the thumbnail size through the theme panel then it displays the warning to enable the image size in the specified block. All other blocks display their correct image sizes, just not Big Grid 4.
For some reason Big Grid 4 loads the full size article images, rather than the thumbnails which we generate for the block sizes.
As a result the images in blocks have white bars below them and the page load is significantly heavier, loading assets which are 8x the size.
Is this a known issue? Is there any way to force the theme to check and use the correct images?

pagespeed will always pick up on some thumbnails. You can customize the theme or choose to use just some of the theme’s blocks that aren’t “responsive by themselves”.
Some blocks are designed to show in different sizes depending on the size of the screen. Those blocks will show an 300px image if the screen is 1920×1080 but if you change to a tablet, the images will be 600px, in some phones in landscape, the “standard” 696×385 image even gets upscaled to 720px. To cover all the possibilities, the theme chooses to load the 696px image, even if sometimes it will downscale it to 350px. I like this feature of the theme, keeps it beautiful across devices, but it has this cost.
If you have pages with lots of blocks/images you might consider using the small blocks only and not the MX ones.
You can also show less articles per block and use the “load more” or infinite scroll, pagespeed will pick less thumbnails.
What about image lazyload? it should work as the above, pagespeed should only pick up the first images cause it doesn’t scroll down, but I’m not sure on this one.
The other solution is to edit the theme files and make them load a small thumbnail even if the block shows big in some cases. It will upscale a small thumbnail up to 700px and it will be ugly but pagespeed will approve. You have to weight things out and compromise.
Anyway, if you consistently get 696px images of 50KB, it’s not critical I believe. I manually “smush” my photos in PS, I don’t usually compress as much as you seem to compress and it still seems an acceptable compromise between performance/graphics. But soon I’ll move to something like WP smush because I’m getting authors/contributors.

You’re still not addressing the issue. On the page there are two modules — both using td_module_2 — that use featured images. One is sourcing featured images from posts, the other from pages. The original image sizes are the same dimensions. The *post* images on mobile look great, the *page* images are low res.
Tested on devices from iPhone 4 to 6. All with the same problem.
Your theory about images being ‘stretched’ to fit would make sense if it was consistent. It’s not.

I am having this issue where I know the correct thumbnail sizes are saved and could be served to the page, however they are not. It is causing my right rail and all my modules to have an inconsistent look/formatting. Is there a way to solve this?

Well, first you want to figure out which “account” is giving you that message. Is it coming from a plugin like JetPack ? Is it coming from social plugin ? If it’s not from your hosting provider, then you’d need to check your error log, or audit your plugins to see if your “account” for that particular plugin has given you that error. Usually in your “account” there would be a message about it, and generally some way to upgrade whatever that account happens to be.
If you site won’t load, and you’re seeing that message — then it seems like that would be from your hosting account. If they say that isn’t coming from them, I’d kind of suggest you get a better host (!).
However, you can
a) make sure you have enough memory allocated to WordPress in both wp-config.php and php.ini (google how to do this)
b) limit number of modules and image sizes used (tune that so you’re using same size modules on each sidebar/footer, for instance — not three different; consider NOT using fly-out suggested and the related posts modules)
c) when you get that message, go right to your server error log to see WHAT caused that
d) get a better host

Unfortunately there is no optimal image size as multiple modules and blocks use different sizes and different aspect ratios. Basically you will need to check the thumbnail list in the theme panel and see what containers you will use on your website. Then you can decide the image size you want to upload as it will have to be bigger than the thumbnail. There is no ideal size, but for best graphic results you could use a full hd image (1920x1080px), make sure you compress it, you don’t want a large file, it will slow page loading speed.

Unfortunately there is no best size for featured images. The only thing that needs to be taken in consideration is the size of the thumbnails used. Here is a list of thumbnail sizes used in our theme: http://screencast.com/t/a23lRsRg6 Now you will have to decide what elements are going to be used and what thumbnails the theme uses for that particular element. Then simply make sure your image is bigger than the biggest thumbnail you want to use. Anything above that dimension is up to you for quality/clarity of your images.

Hello. After considering different things finally I decided to switch to Newspaper but am wondering if you have any specific advice on how to go about it. I have seen documentation, tutorials, etc.. but what I am asking is, what according to you is the best way to switch from one theme to Newspaper theme. In other words, I would like to know if there is a proven best practice or strategy to switch to Newspaper theme as I believe certain things like text formatting, image sizes, etc. may not appear as they do on my existing set up at http://mayapurvoice.com
I apologize if this is a very basic question but I’ve been driving myself crazy trying to figure it out for the past two days. I figured I would just stop and ask at this point in the hopes that somebody can help me. With any luck, the solution is something simple that I have book overlooking.
I’m setting up a new blog and it is my first time using Newspaper. When setting the featured image for posts, I am using as big as images as I can think to use so that they won’t need to scale up to cover any of the possible thumbnail sizes.
Yet as you can see here – http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f54/Sims4Sarah/bloghelp1_zpsei3uuxin.jpg – I am still ending up with random grey space. Often, it is in the big grid headers but not always. It can be in the thumbs of the lower units too.
I don’t know what I am doing wrong. I’m putting it in the featured space on each post – http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f54/Sims4Sarah/bloghelp2_zpsss8nmwzr.jpg and I have been experimenting with larger and larger dimensions in hopes that I’ll hit on a magic size that means I don’t have the problem any more (I installed Force Regenerate Thumbnails and ran it each time I replaced with a new size) but nothing is working.

Hi, I am trying to figure out which class name has the (for example) module 16 for its background?
1. It is similar to this example:

instead of the ” .td-module-meta-holder ” there has to be a class for module background? How is it called?
2. Also I need to know class name for inside-distance between module and block, because I am trying to make that distance smaller and transparent while the module contain its new background color form issue No.1.
3. Correct me if I am wrong, but I am trying to make a gap between blocks (same time preserving module image sizes) so that a page background image can be visible between all blocks while the modules stay with their given background colors.

There, on the picture, you can notice some nice gaps between elements/blocks while the modules inside contain the ‘white’ background color.
I would like to do the same with Newspaper theme, but at the moment it seems imposible without these css classes.

Theme’s thumbs have fixed sizes. I have migrated to a new server and system stopped creating resized versions of uploaded images after migration. My images are looking really bad and i am getting warnings from pagespeed since the image sizes are quite big.

just some input … what we do is upload images via FTP we don’t want multi-cloned; like logos, or branding, or “about us” stuff, avatar images, etc.
For posts, one way we cut down on multiple image creation is this
a) upload featured image via post panel; then select as featured image
b) additional images on post, we load via html, from FTP versions, so only ONE file exists.
c) for optimizations, we did the most common tricks
— 1) set the default WP sm/med/lg sizes to the 3 sizes we most commonly use, and set largest size to the larger block image on front page, sometimes larger than our post image (640×480)
— 2) turn “off” image sizes we are not using from theme panel, limit sizes used on sidebar to same module sizes used for smaller home page sections
— set all category, archive, 404, author, search templates to use same size images
d) normal WP image compression optimizations, as in our case we pre-optimize uploaded files, and we set the default compression for ImageMagick/GDlib used by WP to 55 or 60 vs default 90.
This helped control the sizes.
On one old site, where images had not been compressed well, and/or could not all be “regenerated” we downloaded the image folder via FTP, then applied a local application to optimize all the images then uploaded the optimized image folder back to server.
