Wellll…… you can supposedly specify which area to crop from in the new media editor in WordPress if they enabled that, and we used to use a plugin for that, which I am going to plead stupid on at the moment.

For consistent thumbnails, based on files you upload, remember that WP will reduce images to fit those specified by the theme and the three sizes in the media settings, but will NOT enlarge them. You need to use the thumbnail upscale plugin which we use here in addition to the auto post thumbnail pro plugin (paid).

Steven, using those settings in media is not making other image sizes except the ones created by theme ? That would be great.

Did you turn the crop function on in the admin panel?

Also note that WordPress does not enlarge images to sizes larger than what you upload and you’d need to use plugin for that function.

a follow up on this: I tried to do this but this is not working for thumbnails which are generated from the theme automatically. Do you have an further idea what to do for thumbnail sizes? The credit here is very important because of the media laws in my country. I think like for the most of the people using it for serious projects.

Well, you need to regenerate the thumbnails using the “regenerate thumbnails” plugin to make the new larger images to fit the slider. It will “from now on” make new images.

And, obviously, if you’re using a caching plugin of any kind, you need to turn OFF the caching before building new images so they are seen at new sizes.

As to other issues, you had the broken layout from the outset when I looked at it earlier; but at least your image is now filling the space.

Almost looks like you have been changing the spacing between columns or blocks.

But I’ll leave that for somebody from tech support to help you with.

Probably need to contact the plugin developer since changing the names of images, may not actually change all the links and instances of the indexes with the images, especially if you’re using any kind of caching.

Presumably the plugin would rename all your core image files based on the size you had originally? Ideally you could then simply regenerate thumbnails for all the news sizes from the renamed MAIN images and they’d be built with new name.

However since you’re using a plugin to change the NAMES of the files, one might assume it also updates all your posts to reset all placed, featured images with the new name also?

Obviously you would need to line up the changes to your posts to have the NEW image names in the posts so that the proper thumbnails are being built for that module.

Wordpress does not “enlarge” images; you need to use a plugin to do so. I’ve recommended one a bunch of times here on the forum that I use, which is the “Thumbnail Upscale” plugin. You would need to activate that, then run the regenerate thumbnails plugins. Basically WordPress stupidly disables the upsize function even though web server supports it with their thinking “it makes the photos fuzzy….” (sigh). So, a plugin basically hooks into the built in server function (imagemagick for instance) to simply write any sizes larger than your original uploaded image, which fit the theme, if so called by a module or the larger slider on home page.

Hi Christopher, I been optimizing images with PSD and it worked for the “orginal size” but not for the thumbnails. So, I think I should add this function

Then when I run “Regenerate Thumbnails” it should generate all the thumbnails with this “low cuality” images. Or shoul I lower all image quality for all image sizes in PSD (really a lot of work)

I had 13 thumbs per upload and by disabling WP Media, I now have 11 thumbs.
Just two thumbs less …

Maybe, I’ll disable a few sizes from functions.php

I found it’s better to set the three sizes in the WP admin > media sizes to the three sizes you plan to use the most from the modules used by Newspaper.

The regenerate thumbnails plugin is not part of the theme, so likely good idea to review the documentation for that plugin before you use it; also download and backup all your images before you do anything, since you cannot “undo” using it on existing thumbnails. However it doesn’t touch your existing “main” uploaded image.

You likely have a conflict between the methods being used.

For example when I upload a 745×483 30kb file (size on server; actual size is 24kb); the resize plugin I’m using (to make “larger” images only) along with functions quality setting of “50”, the resulting 700×357 thumb is 23.57kb on server, 1074×483 is 38.25kb; 326×235 is 10.74kb. “Actual” sizes are lower (I’m looking via my ftp tool.)

For example, the orig. 745×483 image is 24.1kb, but 28kb on disk. 30kb on unix server.

I found smushit didn’t help me.

mod_pagespeed does make my images progressive once they are cached (meaning the images seen in the page source have the pagespeed modified file names).

Yes. That is how WordPress themes work. That’s how you have all those smaller size images for your sidebar, homepage, categories, related items bottom of post, recommended fly out, etc. — where did you think all those thumbnails came from? They are created by WP and the theme when you upload an image.

If you wish to remove the sizes you don’t use — meaning, if you don’t use certain modules, you can comment out those sizes in the functions.php file, I believe, and also a trick I’ve advised the past 10 months on the forum has been to choose the three sizes in the WP settings > media setting (not theme panel), to the three sizes you use the most (matching modules you’re using), to not make extra sizes.

Without any theme at all, WP will always create three additional thumbnails. With each theme, thumbs are created to match the sizes you might possibly choose to use for the specific theme layout or module.

You can search the forum for tips and help on removing image sizes you don’t use, also.
