This can be a plugin conflict, please make sure that you do not have a plugin conflict, please deactivate all non theme plugins, also if you are using child theme or cache plugin, please deactivate them, clear all cache and try again.

Unfortunately in Newspaper v9.7.3 there is a problem between WPBakery and tagDiv Composer, I recommend you to use a previous version -> https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/important-new-update-newspaper-9-7/ until will fix the problem.

Unfortunately this is the only way to decrease the site content width, setting on each row the width that you need and set margin left and right auto, for post, you can use a single post template and set on each row from template the 900px width https://www.screencast.com/t/HbTTJTAciSEH after that set it on post and all post will have the 900px width.

Regarding the issue, note that the old API plugin will not work anymore. You can use the new creative plugin for this purpose – https://forum.tagdiv.com/developer-info/

After the 9.7 update many of the theme files were moved in the tagDiv composer, due to the new Envato requirements
– https://tagdiv.com/updating-the-core-of-tagdiv-themes/
As a consequence the child theme is quite limited now, only a few theme files can still be used in it.

Also please make sure that you do not overwrite the theme when you make the update, please delete the current theme and only after that install the new version of theme.
