In the older version I was able to have certain category text on the front landing page show as a certain color, much like the posts have currently. I would like to have that back if possible. Here’s a couple examples, first the non-colored front page and some colored post pages.

It’s been a while…

So I’ve been way behind on versions for a while, but recently made a bunch of changes and updates, including getting everything running on the latest versions.

Anyways, I’m back to having this problem again. I’m currently running version 12.6.8, is there any way at all to get this up and working on this version?

Thanks! I can’t remember why that was put in there anymore. Removing the code fixed it and doesn’t seem to have any other effect on the site. Thanks again!

@PatWire Although I agree that deleting the theme is the way to go, their own documentation says that it’s okay to overwrite the files.

@Chris S Yeah, I saw that. I just would prefer the toolkit method if I can. It’s really easy and automatically creates a backup before updating. I guess I’m spoiled by being able to use it before so I’m hoping I can continue to use it with this new hosting. If not, then it’s not the end of the world, I can do FTP.

@John58 Install the Envato WordPress Toolkit plugin, it makes it super easy.

I love this theme, but this is my #1 annoyance, the changelogs, blog, etc. are way out of date and there is zero way to know what’s included in any of these updates.

Okay, disabled WPTouch for testing. Right away I don’t like the way the site looks. Also, I can’t get my ads and widgets to display correctly for mobile now. There’s no way to specify certain widgets for mobile or desktop only. Same with my ads. I can get the header one fine, but the floating footer doesn’t work. I was able to put the code into the footer ad section in WPTouch, but Newspaper doesn’t have that. Not liking this so far.

I’d really hate to stop using WPTouch. I’ve paid a lot for that and have worked very hard to get the mobile view looking like I want it to. I don’t like the way Newspaper displays the page via mobile. For testing, I will disable it tomorrow and see how the numbers compare.

Problem is if I remove most of those plugins, I loose functionality.

Jwplayer: Yes, I actually have a plan to get rid of this. I’ve been phasing it out, but there are about 40 old posts that still use it.

Jetpack: Have only about 11 of it’s modules activated. Otherwise, I’d have to install more plugins.

KK Star Ratinig: Used to allow visitors to vote on how they liked the film. Newspaper can’t do this.

WPPolling System: Allows for visitors to vote on if 3D/IMAX were worth the extra cost.

GTranslate: Been on the fence if I should get rid of this or not. It is activated and working. A majority of visitors are from the U.S., but there are a surprising amount that come from other countries.

WP Touch: That’s what serves the mobile view for visitors. Not going away.

Contact Form 7: Don’t remember why I have to use this instead of the Jetpack module. There was some issue with it not working as expected.

WP-PostRatings: Allows visitors to vote on if the during/after credit scene is worth sticking around for or not. Again, Newspaper can’t do this.

Ad Rotate Pro: Serves my advertisement. Paid for it and it works well, don’t really want to get rid of it.

Social Media Feather: Adds the share buttons to the top and bottom of posts. Can’t find a way for Newspaper to do that.

Some of those I’ve already had deactivated and went ahead and disabled the rest. Fingers crossed!

Just looked at my stats this morning and I’m over my allotted Account Executions for a 24 hour period. Meaning that my site might be going down again soon. My hosting isn’t waiting long anymore to bring it down when I go over.

One other thing that I can’t understand; using yesterday as an example, 78% of my visitors came from mobile. So why is the Newspaper theme even using resources for mobile visitors? I’m using WPTouch and it’s as optimized as it can get.

What am I missing here, am I simply just “screwed”?

Thanks, but I’m not sure I would trust them. Looking at various reviews and stats about them, I’m not sold. I wouldn’t be adverse to switching hosting, but one that can accommodate my site and not cost me an arm and a leg. ~$30/month is fine, but I want it to be a highly reliable and trustworthy company.

Today I have just under 3000 and I’m at 35613/40000 Account Executions according to cPanel. Next week I expect near 10,000 on both Friday and Saturday!

Most visitors come via search engines.

Well, seems I spoke too soon. Looking at the stats tonight, I’m getting into the red zone. I get the most visitors Friday and Saturday. Next weekend will definitely kill the site with Deadpool coming out. Is there anything else anyone can think of to help? It’s coming down to getting more expensive hosting (which I cannot afford) or finding a better, less resource intensive theme.

And here we go again…

After updating to the latest version I’m having these problems again. I’ve tried every way possible to copy/paste that code again and no matter what I still get the error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected 'class' (T_CLASS) in /home/aftercre/public_html/wp-content/themes/Newspaper/includes/wp_booster/td_module.php on line 1

Ideas?

EDIT: Tried one last thing of downloading the raw paste data and renaming that text file to td_module.php worked. Confusing, but whatever, so long as it’s working.

Thanks, that seems to work! Any side effects that I should know about? So far everything seems fine with that removed.

Wish me luck, I’ve optimized as much as I can and have re-activated the theme today.

I’m not able to use pagespeed though, seems my plugins aren’t compatible. I started disabling them to see if I can get it enabled, but after about six I gave up.

Thanks, I’ll have to look into that “shim”. I have 512M allocated currently. I’m not going to do anything until Monday. I welcome any more suggestions or input until then!

Thanks for the replies. I am on SiteGround’s “Go Geek” shared hosting plan (https://www.siteground.com/web-hosting.htm). I don’t have much stats on the server, but it’s the best that I can afford. I’m thinking of switching to Amazon AWS but would like to make sure I’ve exhausted all other options.

I have followed many optimization guides that I’ve found online as well as TagDiv’s own guides. The only thing that I haven’t done is use WP Supercache, I was using a different one. I’ve also recently signed up for MaxCDN, but that didn’t help with the resource issues either. I just now implemented Disqus as I’ve read that can help too. Oh, and I wasn’t able to use pagespeed as my sharing plugin isn’t compatible, I can disable that plugin for testing purposes.

I get anywhere from 150-300k visitors a month depending on the strength of the box office. Most come from Google searches. SiteGround says that it’s not a visitor issue for the resources though.

But really, for the most part, my site is optimized. Yet SiteGround says that it was using three times more resources on the Newspaper theme than the basic one it’s running now.

I’d like to go back to Newspaper, but doubt that WP Supercache, Disqus and pagespeed will make that much difference, will it???
