Use fewer queries ?

Never happened to me using Newspaper since Sept./Oct 2013.

Not seen any tickets on that here, other than the weird wonky bug where the custom ad would disappear in the theme panel. That was fixed. Hopefully you’re using the latest version of theme that fixed that?

Since that data is stored in dbase for theme not sure how the settings would magically disappear. But, again, good idea to make backups of your theme settings whenever you change anything notable, so you can always “go back” with one copy/paste effort.

If you’re running older version of theme, likely upgrade to current version best choice for having all the bug fixes (see the changelog for the fixes).

When you update a theme it over-writes the original theme files; if you made changes to those files you will lose them, obviously.

For the theme panel, it’s common for some things to reset due to the oddities of WordPress where sometimes the sidebars reset and you have to drag stuff back into place.

Normal transient options and theme panel options should not be lost — and fyi, guess what you can export those before updating which is why auto-updates are bad — normal updating is still best done via FTP as you have no idea if the updater plugin might die/timeout while doing the updates and then you have a half-baked install.

However, theme panel “settings” should never be lost with proper update; and you can always juat re-import them, which you should already know how to do and be ready for from your back up files. Backups are always a good practice!

btw … one trick you can do to clear space to update your home page “quickly….”

aa) turn off caching!
a) restart Apache (kills connections!)
b) turn on VC 442
c) quickly edit your home page
d) turn off VC442

In theory you’ll have short window where the things that were pinging you too much like a scraping bot, etc., will have to restart their queue, and free up a whole bunch of resources.

This is super funky…. but one possible annoying stopgap solution perhaps.

Well, they kind of already have … on various threads.

Right now the *only* solution with Newsmag if you have this CPU spiral of doom is to use the shim plugin, and use VC as little as possible beyond the development portion of your home page. Make sure you have a lot of memory allocated to WordPress (at least 256MB from the wp-config.php file in addition to php.ini setting; you must do both!).

We started to see minor spikes once 4.4.2 came out. Prior to that zero issues. Right now we can use it, but anything later not so good. I can’t imagine if WP Bakery haven’t addressed this ins the 4.5x versions, that they still don’t “get it” and are not solving it — seems to be a “if 90% of people can use, the other 10% oh well …” which isn’t great.

Right now TagDiv is focused on (based on posts I’ve seen):
a) Newspaper 5 w/ features of Newsmag + better grid + new version of API.
b) Next Shim beta for use with Newsmag *and* Newspaper.
c) Newsmag 1.8 with bug fixes and minor updates/tweaks.
d) Dev work on possible alternative to using Visual Composer.

So — at the moment if your site dies with VC 4.42 immediately, then it’s clear you might need to go back one more iteration, and/or stick with 1.6 of Newsmag vs 1.71.

I have 2 sites still working with 1.6 and 4.42 without shim, and doing okay, but they are fairly low traffic sites. I have 3 sites on 1.71 with VC442 and the shim, and 2 of these are our larger main traffic sites which were killing MySQL in batches of every 10 minutes or so going from green to yellow to red, and back. Then CPU death.

Not sure any of that helps … not much TagDiv can do beyond the shim, and possibly providing earlier versions of VC to try for your system. Since they don’t develop VC, it’s not something they can “fix” for anybody beyond the reports they have provided to the Bakery folks as a developer/licensor in hopes of solution (and yet to see one).

Some theme devs are already leaving VC in favor of in house solutions or simpler things like Siteorigin builder (free/open source), etc. (( We’re using Page Builder by SiteOrigin with a lean WP home brew Bootstrap 3 theme for a client reporting system along with Advanced Custom Fields, and works well so far for that … )).

Anyway…. I’m sure TagDiv folk will have some reply, but likely not far different from the above rantings 🙂

Of course, it’s possible that the next version of Visual Composer will be better “optimized” …. frankly, I’m amazed they are not working with an example “DOA” server setup, reading the error logs, and trying to find what bit of code is causing the death spiral, and then FIXING it. But I’m behind on stuff for my own business, so can’t really point fingers on that 😉

You need to first create a contact page (obviously) if you want links to go to a contact page.

Normally you edit your footer elements by editing the menu assigned to the footer from appearance > menus.

Also… it actually works better to use a Google News specific sitemap for Google News (speaking as somebody submitting news to Google News for 10 years since it first launched as beta), then submit that sitemap in your webmaster tools for your site.

Yoast “sells” the news sitemap as paid addon; as do couple of other folks in the plugin repository on wordpress.org. We used to use another product but it was abandoned and we were too lazy to “roll our own” which isn’t terribly difficult, but we chose to just pay Yoast for theirs since already using Yoast SEO for our WP sites.

Note also if you have a “brand new” site it can take awhile for Google to accept you into GN. It’s better to wait 3-4 months until you build up enough content for them to have better idea of what you’re doing. If you don’t get accepted, this will often be why with a brand new site.

It doesn’t need a license key if you use the version bundled with the theme.

Cool.. You can fix it right now with above fix.
Or perhaps tagdiv will have simpler solution.

Those are elements of JETPACK, it looks like — NOT THE THEME.

You might need to hack the JetPack plugin, or perhaps go to Jetpack support forums for help on how to customize it.

Jetpack is NOT part of the theme. So, you should likely go to the support forum for Jetpack to get some additional help beyond what was already suggested.

You can TURN OFF the sharing buttons from Jetpack if you LOOK at the Jetpack panel, and then simply use the built-in theme sharing buttons ?

Is it the social plugin you’re using ? What’s the issue ?

Is it the lack of images for the related posts ? Did you assign featured images to all those stories to generate the thumbnails ???? Are your feautured images large enough to be as big or larger than those thumbnails ????

Probably if you’re more specific of WHAT the problem is somebody could actually try to help, you might get some help from the community more quickly ????

NOTE: you have some errors related to Facebook which appear in Chrome when using the debug tool (F12 key) …

Looks like it might be the Facebook comments plugin you’re using is not setup properly. Theme devs can’t help you manage other folks plugins — you need to sort that out on your own first, when possible. Did you ask them for help ?

Did you try turning off plugins to see which one might be conflicting with other theme elements?

TagDiv support also closed weekends (as noted top of every page here).

But they should be back in the saddle today/tomorrow.

Yep they are super nice to help folks manage their sites when it’s not theme related, way past the point of what is normally included with a $50 theme purchase. Love these guys!! 🙂

You can hack the theme functions to add any additional buttons you want — not everybody in the 10,000 clients TagDiv has all use the same social media tools. 90% of social media traffic is the main four social sites (FB, Twitter, Pinterest, G+).

Note you can easily add ANY custom social media elements to your site using very popular plugins like AddThis, ShareThis, etc. — which let you choose the exact buttons you want, sizes, shapes and locations and takes just a couple of minutes to setup.

doh. That just proves I’ve been too busy working on our main business website this past couple of weeks to even think about that or minifying my CSS, for that matter for 1.71.

I guess we might need Marius or Radu’s (et al) help on how to revise this code for the shim:

This is totally a question for TagDiv support, so let us poke them on this one 🙂

You can change the header “style” from the theme panel to make them full width (I use style 8 myself).

You can change the logo from the theme panel under ‘header’ and the logos section.

TagDiv support closed weekends, but should be back today (Monday).

Well… nothing suddenly “happens” on its own.

Good idea to
a) check to see if something got updated
b) check to see if something being inserted in page from plugin is breaking pages (try turning off plugins to see if something doing that)
c) try rolling back to last version if you updated something — again, the theme cannot magically break by itself
d) did you try checking a post with console (F12 in Chrome) for errors?

Are you using a custom template?
Since the html is only loading logo on IE, and nothing on Chrome, it looks like something is “bad” right at start of page loading.

This can be malformed custom CSS, malformed custom JS, inserted in head; it can be a bad bit of something inserted into head by a plugin, etc.

No idea beyond the above items.

TagDiv folk likely will have better answer, but basically the only way for something to “suddenly” stop working (as per past posts on your site issues), is for you to have changed something, or a plugin to suddenly have changed something. This is why “auto updates” are also a bad idea in case something doesn’t work with something else.

You might also try clearing your site cache if using plugin, or turn that off, if it got corrupted or isn’t house cleaning properly.

You need to remove the OG “author” tag from your posts.
I think you can remove this from the header.php file.

They provide support via the forum. (I don’t work here …)

Did you check the console in your web browser (e.g., F12 in Chrome) to see if the page is generating an error, and look at page source to see if the ad element even being “printed” onto the post or not ?

Maybe try having it after second paragraph?

It’s working for thousands of sites using TagDiv themes, so often it’s something reallllly simple.

A link to an actual post if often helpful for assistance.
