Christopher is a long time WordPress user. Anything else you need to know is private ;-) I *do not* work for TagDiv, but I've been using their themes since late 2013.

Yes; you can update the plugin by itself.

Theme docs are super useful also:

Download from your ThemeForest account where you purchased it. While there on your “download” page you can also check the box to get auto emails announcing when there is an update with direct download link.

So (continued)
WP 4.1; Theme 1.31 Unit/Linux/Apache/CentOS

Not using child theme.
No minification.
Only changed name of theme folder and name in CSS file to sitename.
Not using megamenus.
Not using revslider.
Not using jetpack.
Disqus turned off.

HEADER.PHP HACK: (same hack we did with Newspaper where snippets worked right)
One hack to header.php was removing call to pingback since we don’t want that
REMOVED:<link rel="pingback" href="<?php bloginfo( 'pingback_url' ); ?>" />
Removed the “facebook sharing fix for videos” section, not needed for our use.

Yoast WordPress SEO = on
TagDiv speed booster = on

Post settings:
Default = style 2
Featured Images – use = on
Breadcrumbs = all on
Lightbox = off
more articles box = off
ajax count = off
Related article = show by category
Sharing – all off except show top article sharing

Still showing error of not seeing the rating in preview.

TEST:
on the off chance it’s one of my customizations in functions.php
(I turn off Yoast in toolbar, hide ?version numbers and change default compression; post message for those trying to hack login/ping)
I am removing all of those …… NO CHANGE

Argh. So far only thought at this point is checking the actual content that makes up the review text itself, but looking at the Techwalls site with same issue, I don’t see any oddball characters in the summary box that might cause such an issue.

okay, now with Yoast WordPress SEO “on” as well as “Limit Longin Attempts” plugin turned on (security to block repeat hack attempts by password guessing with bots); we now see the “rdfa-node” populated.

The preview still does not show the rating.

Publisher markup now on via Yoast setting, but “not verified publisher markup” error – even though it is verified.

Bookmark section related to item 1 appears to be error; as that is different story than “this page.”

TEST:
am removing all my custom CSS ….. NO CHANGE

TEST:
turn off post setting ‘show related articles’ …… NO CHANGE
except “bookmark” in first box, now shows link to the first item from sidebar under module “what’s new”

TEST:
remove sidebar second Google adsense box …. NO CHANGE

TEST:
remove all sidebar AdSense Ads (2) ….. NO CHANGE

TEST
switch sidebar ads back on; turn off header AdSense ad …. NO CHANGE

TEST
theme based social sharing at top/bottom of post = OFF ….. NO CHANGE

Okay… we have a problem here, too.

With theme v 1.31 and WordPress 4.1, all plugins off except Visual Composer, and mod_pagspeed off, we’re seeing a problem with an example review page, here:
http://ga-ga.com/1890/book-review-people-deserve-a-fighting-chance/

when tested with the Google rich test tool,
https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?q=http%3A%2F%2Fga-ga.com%2F1890%2Fbook-review-people-deserve-a-fighting-chance%2F

the preview does not show the rating; although this does show in middle of the lineup
Item 2

type: http://schema.org/rating
property:

worstrating: 1
bestrating: 5
ratingvalue: 4.6

also showing the
Error: Page contains property “maincontentofpage” which is not part of the schema.

Very odd that the first schema hatom-feed also includes a “bookmark” element, which appears to be the first “related posts” item below author bio and social media elements, almost as if something from either the bio box or the summary for review is causing a grouping. There is a copyright symbol in the author bio, and there is a $ in the summary for price of book.

Very odd since conversely this page from the “demo” has no issue
http://demo.tagdiv.com/newsmag/td-post-baby-is-totally-delighted-by-his-first-taste-of-solid-food/

when comparing the two, the section on the hatom-feed is very different, and no “rdfa-node” box.

MOST NOTABLY for our own page, this important section is not fully fleshed out:
Item
type: http://schema.org/review

Very odd.

Will proceed with activating Yoast WordPress SEO next.

For those actually following THIS TOPIC and not adding random other things,
I’ll be testing the issue with the snippets not working in Google using v131 and with plugins off, and so forth to see if I can figure out what the issue might be.

simchris
tagDiv Member

@Arved007
so best bet is to not keep adding same requests to other topics and just focus on creating your own, unless you have something to contribute to THIS ISSUE with the theme. Thanks 🙂

You can simply change that in your theme if you need to, nobody else is asking for that as it’s not a bug/problem.

simchris
tagDiv Member

You could likely edit the social sharing module to add that function; or simply use a plugin for social media sharing (AddThis, etc.) and disable the built-in sharing.

Right side of this page > “Documentation” > “Newspaper”. 🙂

simchris

See the theme documentation – link on right side of page, for Newspaper, and then how to update theme.

For the latest dot udpate; you only need to update Visual Composer plugin.

Weird.
You can see in one of my posts, the image fits just right with 640px width
http://ga-ga.com/1815/book-review-good-title-bad-title-beatles-destroyed-rock/

AH

on your page you have inserted a larger image
http://afro.freshmedleydesigns.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/AY-NewsMag-size-2-1024×576.png

which is being inserted into the page as 681×383, which is breaking your layout.

You may want to go into the wp settings > media > and set the large or medium size to 640×480 or something like that, even though the theme should be doing that.

Also check the newsmag theme setting for blocks to ensure the 640×0000 size is “enabled” checked “on.”

That should solve it 🙂

If you use the YOAST WordPress SEO plugin or similar, it will place the correct OG tags in the header to put the story summary there. You can also control the story summary by manually placing that in the summary/excerpt box on each post page. This has been the best solution I’ve found across all themes we use.

simchris
tagDiv Member

You can look at the changelog from the “all files” download file; primarily it’s a download today to provide the fix for Visual Composer which broke with the launch of WordPress 4.1.

The theme cannot auto-update via WordPress as it’s a commercial theme, not hosted at the WordPress.org theme system.

simchris
tagDiv Member

Well, if you set an image to load full size in a space that is smaller than the full size it will break the layout as in your example. When you place the image manually into the post, you should choose the smaller size created by the theme/WP to fit that width, which I think is 640×000. Or, if using featured images, simply choose the image as featured image with the layout where featured image is used as main image.

Hope that made sense 🙂

@sgoadmin
Not right now … trying to migrate an old ecommerce system from old platform (cubecart) to new platform (woocommerce) so we can switch mod_SPDY back on for the server, trying to install custom local copy of “piwik” on subdomain with wildcard SSL, and generally overloaded at the moment …. 🙂

It works for me in IE8 on Windows XP.
However, this was with WordPress 4.01 and not the latest 4.1 released yesterday and last version of Visual Composer.

It’s possible WP 4.1 added something which would cause the theme not to work, or it could be related to the bugs in Visual Composer related to WP 4.1 — have you updated your copy of Visual Composer to the NEW version of VC released today 11.19.14 from the theme download for Newsmag? That might fix it.

simchris

Ah. Sorry 🙂

I see you might want that for your website, while nobody else has asked for that.

@Arved007
rather than post this comment on multiple other threads, why not open a new thread asking how you can change that text for your specific website?

simchris
tagDiv Member

It looks like that was the only change.

To be more clear:
there is no need for home page to be updated daily technically, as most home pages are a summary of content already being indexed, and the content summaries on home page may change hourly, vs daily, and have no long term benefit in SERPS, as the content changes rapidly and so would not be relevant to search the following day if updated daily. This is “normal” practice as the line up summary of content found elsewhere in site pages would be the primary item you want in search not the home page version which is only lead in to the full text version of content. You don’t want them fighting each other. Most home pages for news portals are technically duplicate content in most respects.

Yoast’s WordPress SEO is setup for that thinking; also most corporate sites don’t change daily either. SO, hence why so many “SEO experts” use Yoast and their take on this process (I’ve been doing SEO since March 1995).

HOWEVER – if your needs are different, and/or if “you know better” for your use case, then try this one (which we also use for some websites):
https://wordpress.org/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/

This may work better for your particular use case, regardless of THEME being used; as the XML sitemap system you choose has nothing to with the theme settings beyond the data you are entering for pages and posts such as tags, keywords, post slugs, etc. — The theme doesn’t manage the sitemap or any of the special data found in the XML sitemap plugin you choose for your use.

Sorry if I sounded like a bozo. 🙂

simchris

Works properly for me and tens of thousands of other websites, friend.

Works with my copy of the theme wonderfully.

Again, the issue you bring up has NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS THEME. So why are you bringing it up here? Why not go read up on any issues with Yoast on the Yoast FAQs, support forum, or contact them directly. YOAST is a plugin which manages a sitemap for you; the theme has no interaction with the issue you’re having, so “doesn’t work with the theme” is not relevant; works with my copy. Works for others.

if you need to change a function of Yoast or use a different XML sitemap solution, it’s totally up to you. You may wish to go explore the various options on the WordPress plugin repository. Lots of choices for XML sitemap creation.

Your mileage may vary.

@Arved007
I don’t think that has anything to do with the issue of the rich snippets not working in Google SERPS.

Newsmag was just updated on ThemeForest.

See the Yoast SEO support forum. The theme doesn’t manage Yoast settings.
