We (naturally) have several categories for posts: “Domestic news”, “World news”, “Science news”, etc.

Now, if I delete, for example, the category “Science news”, and some posts were in that category and in no other category, are the posts deleted as well, together with that category?

I hope I managed to be clearer now. If not, please let me know.

Thank you Catalin. It seems that others have not had the same problem as I.

Would upgrading to the latest theme version be free of charge? We’re using Newspaper 6.

Ok… I definitely recall that it did work differently earlier, but I understand that it is a WordPress thing. Thanks for clarifying this.

Best regards,

Ok – thanks for the answer and suggestion. The ability to separately modify link color could be a future development idea.

But what about the need to check the “Open link in new tab” option separately for each and every link?

As I mentioned, this appears to be a setback from the previous version. Could it even be a bug?

Hello Catalin,

I noticed that the header.php file already was exactly as shown in the screencast.

Any more specific ideas of how to solve the problem of lost old Facebook Likes?

Vesa
tagDiv Member

Thanks Catalin!

So, the <head> section of the header.php file should be exactly like in the screencast. And that should solve the problem.

We’ll give it a try.

Thanks for returning to this, Bogdan.

From the screencast you linked above, one would have to add the snippet to the head section of the site, meaning the header.php file.

But precisely how should one edit the header.php file so that all the hundreds of already published posts are affected?

I will have a look at the guides you kindly linked.

Hi Bogdan,

Following your suggestion – would you have an idea about the following (copied from my follow-up question above)?

What, therefore, should be the “content” in the “og:url” meta property in the header.php file, so that all changed URLs are affected collectively? Or is that possible in the first place? If it is, could you fill it in below?

<meta property=”og:url” content=”___________________” />

Vesa

Hi Chris,

At

https://developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins/faqs#moving-urls

it says that future Likes will work OK:

“Using this method tells the crawler that the canonical URL is at the old location, and it will use that to generate the number of likes and shares on the page. Any new likes and shares will continue to aggregate on the old URL as well.”

Hello Bogdan,

The problem is that all our blog posts before the move from http… to https… lost their original Likes (because of the changed URL).

What, therefore, should be the “content” in the “og:url” meta property in the header.php file, so that all changed URLs are affected collectively? Or is that possible in the first place? If it is, could you fill it in below?

<meta property=”og:url” content=”___________________” />

Thanks again,
Vesa

Fabulous, Catalin! One more, related thing:

What do I need to do if I want to add the author’s name when using Style 4?

Vesa
tagDiv Member

Works like a charm, Catalin! Thank you!

http://vastavalkea.fi/2016/04/27/hallituksen-lakiluonnos-suomalaissotilaat-aiotaan-velvoittaa-taistelemaan-ulkomailla/

(I wanted to have the three elements – category, author, date – in that order.)

However, if I wish to increase the separation between the elements, is there a way to adjust that?

Vesa

Thanks for checking, Catalin.

Actually, I noticed that after loading more articles, only three are duplicated in the block.

Those are the last three posts shown before “Aiempia artikkeleita” (=previous articles) is clicked.

All other posts in the block are shown only once. So it is working… with three exceptions. (Why are the last three duplicated? I wonder.)

Hi Catalin,

It is enabled now. Could you have a look right away so I could disable it if we don’t get it to work correctly?

Please go to

http://vastavalkea.fi/

and then scroll to the end of the section under the Big Slide entitled “Kaleidoskooppi – Näkökulmien kirjoa”, and then click “Aiempia artikkeleita” (=previous articles).

Could this be some paging issue?

Vesa

Thanks Bogdan!

I selected the “unique articles” feature (because the Big Slide shows posts from several categories, one of which is the block’s category).

It works – except when one selects “Show more articles” in the block. When one does that, posts shown in the block are duplicated:

What might cause this?

Thanks, Bogdan!

This is clear now.

I wish there was a way to mass-edit the sidebar position for all posts in a given category, but I’m afraid there isn’t. So one has to change it individually for each already published post.

I edited the sidebar position for all six posts in a six-post category, and it works. Alas, some categories contain dozens of posts, meaning lots of stuff to edit.

Hi Bogdan,

I have tried to update the theme, but it has now become clear in other discussions in this forum that updating from version 4 to version 6 is not a straightforward thing (also because of our own optimizations that the update script cannot handle), so we will not be doing it in the near future.

But please clarify this: Is it not possible to have article (posts) list views without any sidebar *and* have a sidebar for individual articles (posts) using the current theme?

As mentioned, I want individual articles to have a(n ivisible) sidebar, exactly as here:

http://vastavalkea.fi/2016/02/11/jarkkyvatko-politiikan-rakenteet-usassakin/

But I’d like (for example) this view

http://vastavalkea.fi/category/talous/

to look like this (= no sidebar):

http://vastavalkea.fi/tag/hyvinvointivaltio/

For some reason, tag lists can be shown without a sidebar, but article lists in category views cannot (more precisely, they can, but then the sidebar disappears from individual articles / posts too). If there is a way, please instruct. Thank you.

Yes, the problem is that if I act so that no sidebar is shown in post listings (which I want), it always gets also removed from individual posts (which I do not want).

A lot of stuff seems to be missing from our Category settings. For example, there is nothing above “Article display view” – please have a look here:

http://vastavalkea.fi/category-settings-example/

Vesa

… to do that without also removing the sidebar from post views.

And to clarify:

* I want the Default sidebar shown in post pages, and it is already shown the way I want, for example:
http://vastavalkea.fi/2016/02/04/janis-varoufakis-kapitalismi-syo-demokratian-ilman-vastarintaamme/

* The sidebar is also already shown in the desired way on the front page:
http://vastavalkea.fi/

* There is no sidebar in tag and search results, and that is exactly how I want it:
http://vastavalkea.fi/?s=leikkaukset

* The only problem occurs when one opens a menu at the top. For example, clicking “Maailma” opens this view:
http://vastavalkea.fi/category/ulkomaat/

I want the entire width of that view used for post listing, and I haven’t found a way to do that.

Hi Bogdan,

When I open

Theme Panel => Layout Settings => Categories

there is no heading “Per category settings” at the top, whereas that heading is shown at the screencast

http://screencast.com/t/kdiTyzzO

My corresponding view is quite different. What could explain that?

Vesa
tagDiv Member

The rightmost column is now filled with a blank (white) sidebar, but this is how I would like the view to be shown:

http://vastavalkea.fi/?s=Sipil%C3%A4n+hallitus

For some reason, that kind of full-width listing does not seem to work in views like

http://vastavalkea.fi/category/katsauksia-maailmaan/

as already mentioned earlier.

I have now managed to get individual posts to be displayed correctly, but not post list views.

Please let me clarify.

Individual posts are shown correctly, for example:

http://vastavalkea.fi/2016/03/04/eun-bkt-yha-alle-vuoden-2007-tason/

However, post lists are almost, but not fully:

http://vastavalkea.fi/category/katsauksia-maailmaan/

You see, I would like the righmost column also to be used for the post list. Instead, it continues to be reserved for the categories “Pääkirjoitus” and “Poiminnat”. A column with these categories should only appear on the front page – here:

http://vastavalkea.fi/

Vesa

Hi Catalin, thank you for the detailed explanation. We’ll stick with Newspaper 4 for now.

Vesa
tagDiv Member

Hi Catalin,

I appreciate your continued help.

I had to restore a recent backup. Maybe you could have a look at our current layout and contrast it with that in the picture.

http://vastavalkea.fi/

I do have Visual Composer installed; it’s just not the latest version. The funny thing was that the settings seemed to be correct (=the same as before theme update), yet for some reason there were additional, unwanted categories like “Latest articles”, “The most popular posts” and “Popular category” (all in Finnish, of course) at the bottom of the front page. They were not there before the update.

I also noticed that my translations were missing.

TagDiv’s instruction video says “Delete the old version of the theme.” At that stage I deleted the “Newspaper 4 child theme”, which was active. Afterwards I have wondered if I should have deleted the Newspaper 4 main theme, not the child theme. Which should one delete?

Note that I have made customizations to a number of php files – for example, td_block_8.php – and added customizations in the CSS Editor. Does this cause problems when updating?

Best,
Vesa
