The NGINX vs Apache thing is a tad confusing with the latest web servers; for example I run Apache because I’ve been doing so for 20 years and know it’s tweaks; NGINX works a bit diffferent; and if I didn’t have a legacy 16 year old website to deal with we’d been running NGINX.

Funny thing, even with the new system, NGINX runs in front of Apache to serve http/2 for https, which we have not yet implemented. But the pages are served by Apache (for now).

Your server is likely running opcache/memcache with NGINX, which is good. It speeds up files requested over and over, as I stated. Local caching on your site is different, as it caches the stuff being queried for each page to speed things up since there is no lag time waiting for dbase to serve and render the page (technically with php/wordpress there are no actual “pages” on your site, they all are built dynamically).

So, you likely have a CentOS/Apache setup (as we do here), but NGINX being used for caching.

Generally, you should just tell your host you need your domain optimized for WORDPRESS, and they should be able to do the rest on the backend as far as caching, gzip/deflate, etc.

No support on weekends isn’t good for hosting provider; means they are a reseller and not a “true host” — they are reselling another company’s hosting, which is very common.

In any case, it’s a process — but some of the stuff is NOT theme specific, it’s WordPress specific, meaning the server side tweaks, and general optimization of time to live, caching, expiration headers, image compression, etc., are NOT specific to ANY theme.

So, good to make Google your friend and explore the many articles out there on “speeding up WordPress” — sites like WPBeginner, WPMU, etc.

Um, if you block wp* in robots.txt then everything in wp-content – including themes css, images, etc. won’t load properly, hence why the “preview” in the Google mobile speed tester shows broken layout.

Even YOAST says not to do this, as it breaks how Google views your pages – as in this case.

Simply remove the blocks from robots.txt — which you don’t need to do as anybody can still go there — they don’t actually stop anybody from doing anything, from a security point of view.

Google needs to load the “dependencies” for WordPress in order to load the pages — so if it cannot load the mobile CSS, then it can’t actually load the mobile version properly hence the errors.

Have you tried “fetch as Google” in your webmaster tools account to see EXACTLY what Google sees when scanning your page?

I would seriously try removing the stuff in your robots.txt file and retry.

Issue with Facebook; check developer tools for post with that author for error.

Also, check to see if the author’s FB page is private or public.

And, make sure you check the LINK to the author page on FB that isn’t linking is actually there.

Note the link will not work when SHARING to FB, but then turns on AFTER the post is live and they then rewrite the “name” shown to match the FB version.

For example we shared something where on our site author was (made up example) Whacky Widgets Corp. and not linked to their FB page; then when actually posted to FB, the link was active, but name changed to Whacky Widget Inc. which was the actual name ON Facebook.

They seem to be messing with this lately, and I only noticed that behavior this week for Sept. 2016.

Hey party people!

Remember that the gzip/deflate settings on both web server and in htaccess (remember that settings for my stuff is based on Apache servers; needs to be different for NGINX boxes, which are becoming more and more common) are good for 20 points or more alone. That is always first thing you need to address. This is what the server compresses before it sends something to the web browser. It’s mission critical, step one.

For example first item in your GTMetrix test:

Enable compression for the following resources to reduce their transfer size by 424.8KiB (79% reduction).

Also for image compression; re checking any image that can be compressed more than 2KB is good idea as it adds up on image heavy layouts;
eg.
Optimize the following images to reduce their size by 31.8KiB (5% reduction).

Generally you can kind of ignore stuff that says optimize by 322bytes as that is 1/3 of a kb. Unless you want to really go nuts on optimization score (I leave that stuff to last myself).

ALSO; to stop yourself from waking up in the middle of night screaming (oh wait, that’s me), test one of your post pages and not your home page; the home page will always initially have worst score due to so many images being loaded. An “average” post page, is best to tune with as that is 90% of your site traffic and what Google is focused on.

And as an anecdote; my original thread on the optimization was actually for the 2014/15 versions of Newspaper, then I switched to Newsmag when it first came out as it better fit my news portals which get updated daily.

Stuff for htaccess and functions.php are “generally” going to be same between the two themes.

So, I’d tackle the gzip/deflate thing first – as that is your biggest gotcha right now.

I am confused. I am not sure what you mean by: ”you cannot replicate the look of one demo on another one which is a popular request we get. It’s either a full demo or not at all”. If it is a full demo or not, why are you saying then that on every demo you can edit exactly the same settings as the theme panel provides?
I am lost in a translation here:-). Please let me explain what I mean by editing first:

– Example: Demo Black Version – Has 6 pages: Home. Lifestyle, Fashion, Sport, Tech, World,
Editing /Customizing Question: Can I edit/customize the demo to have for example only 5 pages with?
Can I create my own list of categories or do I need to follow already
existing settings?

Reason behind the questions: I like the look of the black version and I would like to see if I can
edit/customize for a travel project. Therefore, I won’t need everything that is
currently included in the theme.

How can I make the text of the headline pure white #ffffff and also not transparent?

Also with the grey box on the slider containing the title, how can we make it move down the image along with the text to cover the bottom of the image rather than higher up?

I took all the steps you have asked me for. I updated the theme to the latest version as well as plugins. However issues still continue:

Could you please fix these issues asap? I am really losing a lot of time.

I have caching enabled and am using the ajax view count but i have noticed the google web crawler bot has now started hitting the ajax view count, which would increase the number of views compared to those shown in google analytics now that it will count bot hits.
Also importantly, i don’t want the web crawler wasting time with these extra requests, i’m happy for it to used cached view count each hit.

default robots.txt for wordpress is this:

Do you think changing robots.txt to the latter would work? There is a lot conjecture about order of precedence of rules?

Also if you aren’t already, consider not updating the count if its a bot hit.

EDit: actually google robots.txt tester says the latter should block it but the first version not. Are there any frontend resources or anything loaded via /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?td_theme_name=Newspaper&v=7.3 that i shoudl be aware of i may be affecting?

A lot of content you sent me. Anyway, doesnt answer my question. See the example link, the ad (Amazon) isnt lined up well – needs 5px margin e.g. to not “overlay” content…

I have seen two new issues.

1) Whenever I search enewsvid.com on google, I get the following error. Few hours ago i am create robots.txt file but error is still.

2) I have create sitemap.xml file from “xml-sitemaps.com” the website create 500 plus links. When i am uploading sitemap.xml on “google.com/webmasters” they give me warning Please help me.

Thanks for the reply.

I tried everything, in the style.css file and in the Custom CSS. Nothing works.

For example: As you can see the logo floats to the right >> https://postimg.org/image/fad9sbelz/

But in my css.style file the float:right!important line doesn’t exist. I deleted it. so why is it still there?

And this happens with every line. i delete/edit it, but nothing cahnges.
