This http://screencast.com/t/QKs8p0aKk3kI is a solution to exclude the current post from widgets on posts pages.
Regarding the unique articles issue let me know if you still have it as I’ve checked your homepage but haven’t found any duplicated posts, all seem to load just once on my side.
If you still have issues with this. Please make sure you empty all caches and purge files if you use CDN host then test again. I’ve also tested this feature and haven’t found any issues using the latest theme version(4.6.2).

Also you can change/add background color for menus from Theme Panel > Theme Colors: http://screencast.com/t/O8tNMLZcwvdJ
If you want to use a different background only for your homepage you can do this only with css: http://screencast.com/t/wJAEqAd53Y5
