Theme has nothing to d with mod_pagespeed.

This is something managed at hosting level, and should be optimized for WordPress in general. Do search online f or how to setup mod_pagespeed to work with WordPress.

I don’t recommend using mod_pagespeed for messing with CSS and JS files, as it is more likely to break stuff with WordPress, jquery, plugins, theme, etc.

Very much a trial and error — you need to test the settings for your own site, plugins, hosting, platform, etc., and then see how it works by viewing your page source, testing page speed insights, gtmetricx test, etc.

The Newspaper 6 theme is marketed as an SEO optimized theme and was a good half of the reason if not more for the purchase.

Not trying to troll but this is a topic of high importance and since you mention there is no eta on the update, would it be possible to sticky this post? and/or possibly create a list of SEO optimization issues that need addressing?

I can try and hardcode the changes but the issues for the home page seem a bit extensive for me and am hoping these modifications can be completed quickly, at least in part since I’m indexing for all my pages/posts but not my home page 🙁

try clearing any cache/cdn reset if used;
also try clearing transients with wp-optimize

the vc/jscomposer plugin is in the ‘all files’ download from themeforest in the oddest of places — the plugins folder! — so, you might try getting it from there.

You need to update both theme and plugin to fix issue with WP 4.5.

Delete old jscomposer folder in your plugins folder, upoload new one. Clear caching/CDN, and also transients using wp-optimize or similar.

Should work!

Via FTP delete the jscomposer folder in plugins folder.

Install clean version.

You may need to clear all caching/CDN as applicable; also clear ‘transients’ using WP-optimize.

Always keep backup of working site as snapshot so you can roll back if needed.

First we would want to apologize for any inconvenience you have had using our theme.
The last update was meant only to fix the jQuery conflict which appeared after wordpress’s last update and also to include the latest version of Visual Composer plugin which works fine with new wp version. we didn’t added any new feature yet but we work at a major update for Newsmag which currently is in development.
I can’t say for sure how much time will pass until the new update will be ready but we do our best to have it ready as soon as possible. However we have to make sure that the new theme’s version it’s optimized for best performances and all its features will work fine. This require a bit of time and lots of tests on different browsers and devices.
With regard at issues of actual theme’s version with Woocommerce plugin I am not really sure what you mean so please provide a link where I can inspect this and more specific details in this regard. I’ve made a few tests and Woocommerce V 2.5.5 works fine with current version of Newsmag that’s why I am a bit unsure at what you’re referring. If you have any issues related with theme’s functionality which affect and Woocommerce please open a new topic and provide all necessary details so we can insect this.

Yes,
YOU need to properly setup your hosting system.

a) Enable compression is done at server level => you need gzip/deflate active, this alone is good for 20 points
b) you need to enable browser caching settings, aka “time to live” — this is typically done in your htaccess file
c) server response time is how fast/slow it takes your hosting system to respond to a response and start building a php page — that is mostly due to your hosting setup, nothing to do with the theme

Use my optimization guide in the tutorials / DIY / best of forums, to learn how to properly optimize your WordPress site.

No complex theme will “out of the box” do as well as a pure text-based theme. So it’s not apples to apples.

The main issues you have are a) and b) and only YOU can fix that as it’s NOT theme related.

As others have said, the theme alone doesn’t achieve SEO success for you. You need to know how to do keyword research, how to analyze the competition, how to configure Yoast SEO properly, and how to create SEO optimized articles. This all assumes you have a good niche (i.e. you’re not writing bout Palm Pilots. 🙂 ).

Conventional SEO wisdom is that you don’t want to push down content you want to rank for with left sidebars, excessive CSS code, Java Script, etc. A good test would be to choose an article you have that ranks well in google, give that article its own long, custom left sidebar, and see if this affects your organic results. I haven’t tested this because I don’t find left sidebars appealing enough to be worth the risk.

Site structure does affect SEO. If you don’t want Google to try to rank content in your navigational menus, sidebars, ad boxes, author box, comments section, footer, etc., you need to tell Google where these things are using proper HTML5 structure. When and where the theme uses header tags is also extremely important.

If a site has Yoast SEO properly configured, has SEO optimized articles, and ranks for competitive keywords, that site’s organic results will still be negatively impacted if it switches from an SEO optimized theme to a non SEO optimized them. (The exception to this is cases where a site has a strong backlink profile. Strong off-page SEO and overcome poor on-page SEO)

Newspaper is the most functional AND visually appealing theme I’ve ever tested. Most themes are one or the other. Newspaper is both. Unfortunately, until the SEO issues are resolved, I can’t use this theme.

The last time I checked Newspaper’s HTML5 implementation, it didn’t appear to be 100%. In the thread below I suggested some HTML5 changes:

If these HML5 issues still exist, it’s going to be harder to rank pages with this theme compared to ranking the same content in another theme that implements HTML5 correctly. With the same content and same optimized on-page SEO, Newspaper caused my organic results to drop.

This stuff isn’t hard to fix. You just need someone with proven experience with SEO, ranking pages, and theme development to review Newspaper.

I’m not posting this to give you grief. I genuinely would like to see the SEO improvements done so that I can use this theme again.

Of note, most of the top selling themes on Theme Forest have HTML5, header tag, and/or alt tag issues when I checked last year. One of the top themes was <H1> multiple times on a post and was using <H2> in the sidebar! lol

Not theme related — theme does not manage your hosting of WordPress settings, but

a) you need to change the site URL in WP admin > settings > general > site URL ; then resave permalinks
b) you can add in wp-config.php
c) you may need to search/replace old domain name in the php dbase if you have things in the post meta like image placements using old URL — changing URl doesn’t update that stuff
d) you will need to clear all your caching, obviously (in both site/CDN if used, and browser)
e) you may need to clear ‘transients’ using something like wp-optimize
f) you need to resave your permalinks again

Reinstall Visual Composer via FTP

Enable via plugin panel

Google got really picky about the render blocking stuff on mobile, so by default it *is* about 20 points lower. That is “normal” unless you do some major hacking to WP.

Once you view my thread and do all you can, the last steps would be a bit complex for average user, which requires

a) unhooking loading Google fonts from the theme, and capturing the CSS from Google and putting that in your style.css file; or for fastest speed replace Google fonts with “web safe” font stack (requires unhooking Google fonts in theme main includes/function file AND search/replace main style.css to optimize fonts used by choosing web-safe font stacks)

b) un-enqueuing the style.css and loading in footer.php; then using criticalCSS generator to put above the fold CSS “inline” in the header.php file.

c) using wp-booster to move all JS to footer

Set your ftp software to show invisible or “.” files.

Yes, WordPress needs a .htaccess file in root folder to be able to set the permalinks/structure.

You also need it to optimize your caching,time to live, etc.

Thanks for your reply.I closed the EWWW image optimizer plugin, which caused the problem.
But I still need tools to help me compress my images on website to improve page speed.
Do you have any recommended plugin for image optimization and page speed improvement which compatible to your theme?
I really need help because my website speed is quite slow now, thanks a lot!
