Update:
testing again today … managed to move another site from NM 1.6 and VC from Jan., to NM 1.71 with Shim Beta 1.02.

One minor issue with a full width (2 col) divider class on home page and full width text block (which I used to put some H1 text bottom of home page about the site).

Radu, sent you couple emails around 12pm PDT 5/11/15.

Presumably only downside to using the “shim” — is that one would need to switch VC back on to edit a page (e.g., static home page), and turn off the shim. I will be testing that usability here momentarily.

So, likely process would be
a) develop home page w/ VC turned on; shim OFF
b) switch off VC plugin
c) switch on TD shim plugin
d) check home page works properly

If one needed to edit
a) switch OFF the td shim beta
b) switch on VC
c) edit page, then repeat process in first block above.

Anecdotal for anybody wondering what is up with this beta testing 🙂

Not sure how mod_pagespeed would work with the swap out of VC vs shim …

mod_pagespeed note:
for the first site I was testing shim with from last week;
I today switched back on mod_pagespeed (for those unaware, this is an Apache optimization plugin from Google which runs on server) and put back in all my htaccess optimizations and it’s working A-Okay (I had turned off all such optimizations for testing the SHIM plugin first try to avoid any conflicts with that).

I think the top right elements are using a custom font, or png files.
You can probably look for the module for the social iccons in the theme folder, and perhaps try to edit that.

Virtually no site on the web uses the “official” graphics from the social sites as they are often not same size or “style”; most use the official logo but with custom iterations for consistency — e.g., TIME doesn’t use the official social buttons, nor does CNN, etc. Many now use the font awesome font set which has all the social icons and load faster than individual graphics. Others use sprites vs individual graphics for better pagespeed rating.

So take those issues into account if hacking the design elements 🙂

HI, just to give you an idea ….
our site CaliforniaNewswire.com running the shim “beta 2” is right now trouble free; although I have not yet switched on mod_pagespeed but will be doing that today — it shouldn’t cause any issues.

By comparison, one of our other sites eNewsChannels.com – running 1.6 + VC got a huge influx of traffic last night, and some scraping from various syndicators, and our CPU went to

Based on the Apache error log, that was all from that ONE site, being scraped from “54.160.202.74”

One index page being scraped for all the headlines, used 9.85% of the CPU (!). And, um them be like QUAD XEON processors, too.

So, it’s pretty clear Visual Composer when ‘under load’ really whacks the system!

O–M–G — it works! (!!)

Radu, your “shim” 1.0 BETA 2, worked wonderfully. Visual Composer not even on the domain (!).

CPU is “normal” SO FAR (I am double checking every 10 minutes; about to do NEW post to see what happens).

Sent you the long winded email (12:34pm PDT 5/6/15) with server info, and such; and the testing steps I did so far today with Newsmag 1.71B, SHIM 1.0 B2, speed booster on, mod_pagespeed OFF.

I am turning sidebars on/off, changing modules on sidebar to “mess” with it. Leaving home page as the “fancy” layout I already had as page from 2.5 weeks back when setup.

Only thing I’m doing slightly different at the moment is I have the built-in “related” posts OFF and using my long-time fallback “contextual related posts” plugin to just stick 3 text-only related item headlines bottom of each story (it checks content not just tags for last 365 days, and caches the output… nice).

Will update by email AND here, as I play with this more.

Remove blocking JavaScript and CSS display the contents of the upper half of the page
Your resources page has 16 scripts and 20 CSS resources causing a blockage. This causes a delay in processing the page.
Unable to view the contents of the upper half of the page without having to wait for any of the resources are loaded. Try to postpone or load asynchronously resources that block the display, or insert critical portions of these resources directly in the HTML.

I’ve check with a few friends and they all say that my site looks alright now. This is what we all see:

Can you clear your cookies and cache of your browser and check to see if that is what you see?

I replaced my style.css code with the original, not minified – when I minify my style.CSS code, the mobile site completely messes up – do you know why? It appears as the above. It is recommended to minify in Chris’ pagespeed post (he outlines how to do it) – but it makes the mobile theme un-useable.

Well, VC does work
— obviously if you delete the old folder, you need to upload a new fresh copy — assuming you did that ?

Start up without ANY other plugins running; turn off all caching.

Make sure your server is setup for php to have at least 256MB RAM allocated to it.

Clear the cache in your web browser.

Typically best to update WP, before updating theme, in future… just a thought. Seems to work better than way.

If above doesn’t work, perhaps try:

First clear/disable any server caching, turn off mod_pagespeed if using it.

a) switch to default theme
b) deactivate visual composer
c) deactivate all plugins
d) switch on visual composer
d) under appearance > preview theme for newsmag — if it won’t ‘preview’ at all; then you need to do CLEAN install of the theme, td plugins, and visual composer
e) once you can ‘preview’ the theme, then you can activate it and it will work.
f) then turn on plugins and if it dies, disable the bad plugin

Went through this issue last week, actually.

On some sites we turn off the theme counter, and use WP-PostViews — which we’ve used for years; on some sites we use the theme counter to show the count on pages, and manually change the theme counter setup file to change the field to “views” which is the datafield we’ve used for years and years (9?). Long time — I was younger then 😉

So, that way we use the existing field, keep old counts, and then theme counts “from now on.” If we turn off the theme for some reason, we switch WP-PostViews back on, which uses the “views” field, and no loss of tracking.

Anyway, that’s how I do it.

*addition:
we don’t use w3cache so, don’t need to use the “workaround” some folks are doing or the ajax counter. Since we have a dedicated server we’re running mod_pagespeed via opcache and I have 32GB of RAM to play with, not so necessary.

One annoying thing we have right now is somebody pinging our RSS feeds every 5 minutes and causing some kind of php thing to go from green to yellow EVERY 5 minutes, then every 10 minutes, then 20 minutes later; then exactly one hour later. Really weird. Can’t figure out where/what/when that is happening.

Main differences (my impressions on this topic only, not ‘official’ in any way)

Newspaper — wider layout for those doing things like 3 column newspaper pages, or where a wider post area needed to do 2 columns of text with photo wraps, for presentation “like a newspaper,” or for those who want a larger playing field. Support for wider ad units in post area.

NewsMag — more compact layout with keylines, like a magazine or older TIME magazine print layout where everything is boxed. NO “wide screen” layout (fixed more narrow grid).

“Bells and whistles” may end up being same between the two at some point, both may lose any R-T-L support, both may support the new TagDiv “API” to hook in extra functions and features.

Main difference is the “width/layout” area and hence slightly different layouts and modules with visual composer, and slightly different default and custom layouts on “category/archive” pages.

In our case, we chose to go with Newsmag as it was more what we wanted when Newspaper was first launched and did have a narrow layout. We wanted to migrate from our in-house responsive (grid 960 custom layout, pre bootstrap) theme, and/or Woo Canvas to seomthing more “shiny and cool” … with “some sense of pagespeed optimization” which most foundries were clueless about in Fall of 2013, but Tagdiv was trumpeting (as we had been doing so here).

I think some folks might end up buying both and trying them out with your specific content and images then choosing the right one for your needs, knowing you’ll have similar workflow, plugins, and “bells and whistles.”

My two cents anyway 🙂

Just to clarify, it’s not really a ‘theme’ issue – for those curious. It’s an issue with Google’s bot having issues with scraping pages to verify actual content vs spammers who try to trick google with content in META data that doesn’t match what is actually on the page.

So, this is why it “seems” like Google’s bot is just ignoring the “description” tags; they use that as “hint” then read the page and look for stuff in certain common “blocks” of content, like “first full paragraph of text on page” …

I am trying to sort out why this happens on some templates, layouts and not on others, across various top websites and small ones, too.

For example I tested page from WIRED mag the other day, and it grabbed the first paragraph; where I tested a page from our main news service portal — which does not use WordPress or any popular CMS [in house system we built in 2005 and I built the templates myself from scratch using customized bootstrap 2.3x code] — and these “should” work but also don’t get the first paragraph captured by G+.

(e.g. this page “should” work — I built it myself 🙂 but does not:

a) “wide screen” headline — across top, 2 columns
b) category buttons/links above headline, after breadcrumbs (on/off no diff)
c) not issue with using mod_pagespeed for comment and whitespace removal, or rewriting images
d) not issue with https vs non https

*anecodatal: have run into couple of issues with Google News, when scraping page couple of times they grabbed the category buttons in place of the story headline or appended them in front of headline — contrary to news XML sitemap — stupid, stupid, stupid! Possibly need more “separation” from those and headline — not yet sure on that.

So, I’m playing with it in the midst of doing major security audit of WordPress plugins, and code across 15 websites (ugh). Only time we had a WP website “hacked” was way back (something like v 1.6 or 2.6 or something? — Al Gore’s website hacked same day ours was …Nov 2007 for those who know their beans). So, we stay on top of security stuff pretty strictly but these new vulnerabilities are a nest of vipers waiting to get milked for their toothy sting juice (have fun with that sentence English translators!). 😉

No way to fully remove the “render blocking” issue unless you custom engineer your website from scratch to load pages in “chunks” — which is virtually impossible with off the shelf product like this; so technically you will almost ALWAYS get that warning. So, the “goal” would be to address everything ELSE, and “tune” your site without any external elements being loaded, then switch back on the external stuff (e.g., adverts, etc.).

I don’t use Cloudflare, so not much help there.

The reason I don’t provide “support” anymore is I don’t work here; and every server and setup has different issues which are unrelated to how “I do it.” So, not much help for some things like CLoudflare — I stopped using our Amazon CDN for just such issues like IE randomly not loading font awesome, and Firefox just is a P.O.S. with a whole slew of java issues (e.g., our old ecom system won’t load via mod_SPDY with FIrefox, but works with every other browser known to man — forced me to turn off mod_SPDY and having to migrate our ecom to woocommerce … !). Stupid FF.

The other reason I stopped answering some questions is people would not bother to actually READ my help post and ask if their htaccess file was okay. 😉

I have not bothered putting anything in the speedbooster plugin as not a huge help with most stuff; and many plugins that I use actually have option to load JS in footer anyway, so no need to hack that into the plugin.

Upshot — I have not used the plugin beyond its default settings, since mod_pagespeed takes care of a lot of things (except the latest update which was being overloaded by a legacy site with a loop of doom with timthumb…. but woo taking care of that finally..)

blah blah. Anyway… sorry no magic answers today !

@Chris I have gone through whole of your tutorial and fetched some very useful information from there especially optimization through functions.php. However,in one of your post you mentioned that no more pagespeed support (My understanding)so I deliberately avoided requesting you.

I am little stuck with Javascript and CSS error. I have tested it with and without speedbooster plugin and result almost remains the same with no difference in score with almost same number of items appearing in Pagespeed insights.

Cloudflare resolves the JS issue but menu typography does’nt work well in FF and IE when served through CDN.

Can you help me in this regard?
