This is not a bug. You simply did not regenerate your thumbnails after changing themes. our theme needs to create it;s own thumbnails for blocks to display images properly. Please use this guide: https://forum.tagdiv.com/thumbnails-fix-strange-looking-images-on-blocks/

Please notice that the Block 21 uses the module 16 and for this type of feature do not exist any option in Theme panel because it will use the default thumbnail from WordPress (default 150*150px) -> http://screencast.com/t/hiO726xl So, if you want when you have not featured image to hide that placeholder, you have option for it in Theme panel, like this -> http://screencast.com/t/EwtvDZ1T3j4p and then the result you should see here -> http://screencast.com/t/I6LVD53m0 That white space will remain because it is part of Block 21 and you cannot damage the layout for this module because then you will not get good results.

The problem you face is the thumbnail not being used on this block so the images get their full height that is different from one another so the post title is in different places on different modules.

Unfortunately the theme will not upscale your images. It only crops them. You need to upload images bigger than the containers on the homepage if you want them to display properly. There is another issue on your end though. Your site does not use thumbnails for images. you nned to make sure your thumbs are set for the blocks that you use on your site: http://screencast.com/t/yYYqdI8O And then use this guide: https://forum.tagdiv.com/thumbnails-fix-strange-looking-images-on-blocks/

As for the image sizes, there is no ideal image size I can recommend. You will have to asses the containers and thumbs you plan on using on your site and the post templates as well. if you use post templates that use the full size images like: http://demo.tagdiv.com/newspaper/td-post-2015-awards-all-of-the-best-and-worst-moments-from-the-show/ then a full had image is required. If not, you need to inspect every element especially on the homepage. If you use big grids, your images must be at least the size of the big grid container otherwise they will not fit inside and not display properly. Here is a list of all thumbs used in our theme:
