In order to achieve the best results after you will install the latest update you have to follow some rigorous steps like this -> you have to delete both of your themes, child theme, and main theme. All your customizations from your Newspaper 4 child theme will do not work because all the files from this were changed in Newspaper 6 and as the main theme and also you lose all changes.
Newspaper 6 is a whole new theme so an update from 4 to 6 may cause the same issues as switching to another theme (but we did try to maintain compatibility where ever possible).
Always make a full backup of your current installation – https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups and then do a clean update, meaning that we recommend that you delete the old version of the theme before uploading the new one – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ update also the plugins that come bundled with the theme files from the /plugins folder. In the “how to update” guide is specified that you will have to run the script that will import from database your settings.
The shortcodes have been changed so old ones will not work anymore. Please note that old files customization or custom CSS will not work with the new version and you will have to adjust or re-add them.
Bottom line is that newspaper 6 is a whole new theme built from scratch.
Unfortunately, you will have to clear your agenda and spare a bit of time to adjust all your settings to the new version of the theme.
If you have already Newspaper 6 and you want only to do the update to latest version, you should make this without any problem. All your customization are recorded in the database which is not affected by this update.

First, please update your theme as google changed their algorithm since newspaper 6.4 (latest version is 6.6.5) and we made adjustments for the structure data errors (I assume this is the tool used)

So, what’s purpose of child theme? In many other WordPress themes, it use to do customization. When a new update come, just need to update the main theme.

Please notice that if your customized files from your child theme are changed in the update, all the information/customization from these kinds of files will be overwritten. Before doing the update, you have to check the changelog and see how files were changed in the update and you can replace it only these files. If your changed files were changed in the update, unfortunately, you will have to re-customize again after doing the update.

I had a site that had Newspaper 4 still installed on it somehow, and I tried to update it to the current 6.6.5 version. The error says this:

Please notice that all the modification wich you have done in your child theme, on the next update, the code will be overwritten. All of the files which you have in your child theme will be changed in the new update, you have to replace it with the updated file and you have to start again to configure it.

I’ve read a few documents but didn’t understand some points. So I open this thread to ask:
1. If I want to custom header, just copy some files that belong to header and paste in the child theme folder and then active the child them, right?
2. If the question #1 is right, then in the future, there is a new update for these files, do I need to update the files on child theme? Basically, when I copy, they are the same, but after updating the new version, the files of the main theme are different with the child theme.
I’m sorry if my sentences aren’t clear. For example: I want to add a custom_ads in the header. According to what I have read from here: https://forum.tagdiv.com/the-child-theme-support-tutorial/, I need to create a new folder Newspaper-child and copy header.php into it. And then paste the customization code in here.

The question is, when any new update come and need to change header.php, do I need to update the header.php in the child theme too?

I have tried to update the theme, but it has now become clear in other discussions in this forum that updating from version 4 to version 6 is not a straightforward thing (also because of our own optimizations that the update script cannot handle), so we will not be doing it in the near future.
But please clarify this: Is it not possible to have article (posts) list views without any sidebar *and* have a sidebar for individual articles (posts) using the current theme?
As mentioned, I want individual articles to have a(n ivisible) sidebar, exactly as here:

I’m not sure why your issue occurs. Now it seems to display fine. They might have been affected by cache so the changes only applied when the cache was cleared. The WordPress update did not change nothing regrading the thumbs/images. During the update process all themes files are deleted and replaced by the new theme files so all customizations will be lost. You can avoid that by using the child theme and make your customiztions there. Regarding the code from child theme there is an important aspects that must be considered:
– if in previous theme’s version a specific code added in child theme worked fine that doesn’t mean that will work with a new theme version. When theme update many of its files are changed and it’s a good practice to check update_log.txt file for each update and see what files had been modified so if those specific files are used in the child theme you will have to check your customizations to not break the functionality of the theme.

You only need to update the Visual Composer and Social Counter plugins. The most easy way is by deleting the current versions then install the new ones from plugins panel: http://screencast.com/t/lpjyJzS4Urw
