What does “new grid system: the 980px grid is deprecated” means? O_o

Got them all fixed! It was tricky since phpMyAdmin would not let me do a find and replace of finding the copyright symbol and replacing it with ©. Somewhere along the line, it converted my “©” back into it’s equivalent copyright sign. I’m assuming it did this since phpMyAdmin is web based…

To make a long story short, I simply clicked the SQL tab and took out the copyright symbol and replaced it with ©

Hopefully this will help someone in the future. Here’s the SQL command, just fill in the name of your database where indicated:

UPDATE database_name.wp_posts SET post_excerpt = REPLACE(post_excerpt, '©', '©') WHERE post_excerpt LIKE '%©%' COLLATE utf8mb4_bin

Wellll…. I went from 3.9.2 to 4.1 and had no issues, but I deleted the old theme folder entirely.

So, I did

1) backup dbase
2) backup “theme settings”
3) switch to twenty-twelve theme
4) delete wp-content/themes/Newspaper – folder
5) upload new theme
6) delete old visual composer folder – as noted in the update documentation on this forum
7) install new VC plugin, and new plugins from the new theme (speedbooster, etc.)
8) turn off ALL plugins
9) activate newspaper theme
10) activate visual composer theme
11) check theme settings

That worked for me.

They deleted the responsive settings in the lastest update and replace it with JS settings…

Deleted files – 2 files
includes\wp_booster\td_responsive.php
wp-admin\panel\views\panel_responsive_settings.php

New files – 7 files
images\pagebuilder\block10.png
images\pagebuilder\vimeo.png
images\pagebuilder\youtube.png
includes\modules\td_module_10.php

@Christopher: I just checked and there is no panel_responsive_settings.php in the .zip-file that i have downloaded to upgrade the theme. =S

Dunno what to do, now my panel_responsive_settings.php is very old as i havent been updating regularly, I might perhaps need the latest version of this file for it to work properly if no changes have been made since version 3.5 where i was when i started today. (I know, I should have updated sooner. Much sooner.)

Maybe reinstall the theme, via FTP, to be safe.

If using a child theme you may need to switch to the main theme for update, then switch back to child theme, as some seem to do (I don’t use child theme methodology due to speed issues and gremlins).

(I generally don’t turn off my plugins, since I’m updating my theme via FTP and the stuff I’m using doesn’t cause dbase writes/crashes if the theme being updated quickly via FTP)

I do upgrade via FTP; simply over-write existing theme folder with new one.
Over write existing plugins with new ones.

Your mileage may vary.

And it’s good they are warning people, since any theme from prior to January, likely has the bad version (e.g., Newspaper 3.9.2 has the hackable version!). Also some themes on Themeforest and Envato (et al) have NOT been updated since January, and may be semi abandonware but are still being sold, with the bad version RIGHT NOW. So, they needed to do something about that issue, as people were buying themes and having their site(s) hacked pretty quick (another reason to use some form of comment removal to hide the versions of apps from your site header file!).

In fact, I know two themes got booted from my “purchase” line up of themes, which had not been updated in a long time, this month.

I tweeted about this, too and they tweeted back to clarify which versions were vulnerable. So, Themepunch has been on this pretty seriously. Similarly YOAST hired a security firm to audit their plugins, also. I think this may become a trend.

There are actually websites now which list all the current vulnerabilities in WordPress and plugins, which is very nice. I don’t check it all the time, but I do once in awhile out of curiosity.

XMLRPC is often an issue which is why I do things to disable it.

But security is a whole different discussion. 🙂

Heh. I actually skip every couple of updates and then do my list of minor hacks; not really much of a way around it. Also notable is that you don’t have to update unless it’s for a security patch, resolved feature issue, bugfix, new feature, etc.

Usually what I do, vs using child themes, is keep a cheat sheet, much like you are doing in your list above, and then open my cheat folder, and my new version folder side by side, then go through each item and modify the new version for my fixes to keep them.

Tedious, but once you have your site the way you want it, you don’t need to get crazy about “oh no! there’s a new update!” — if your site WORKS, in some cases no reason to update every day. I have a site with Woo Canvas, and I skip every 5 updates until I see a need to do so, or if it fixes some wonky responsive issue. Site works, big whoop if they updated it last week.

Often you can look at the “what is new” summary, and decide if that works for you.

I skipped the 4.22 update, and 4.3 and will update on 4.3.1 of Newspaper. But that’s me.

You can use a child theme, just remember for some CSS and javascript things you may find a gremlin which you cannot track down for any specific reason other than you are basically running two themes at same time.

Another benefit of using ONE main theme, is you can also more readily optimize your wp-config.php file to include direct paths to your folders and know they will always work.

This was covered here on the forum recently. I actually spoke to the folks who make Revolution Slider, and the product was patched 29 versions ago. Meaning, RS 4.12 technically. All versions after that were patched.

So, if you have the current theme update 4.2 or later which includes RS Version 4.3.8 SkyWood (27th April 2014), you don’t need to worry about it. Good reason to keep your theme updated, or download the latest plugins which are bundled with each theme update.

That post is 8 days ago. Since then the issue has been brought to tagDiv’s attention and the plugin is the updated, secure version in the latest theme update.

Child themes are indeed handy. Christopher recently said he doesn’t use them because of the pagespeed slowdown in CSS importing, if I understood him right, which is valid but it does prevent things like this. If you’re a heavy modifier of files, each update will be painful…

Child themes basically make WP use the version of the file in the child theme rather than the parent theme’s, if one exists. Hence your changes would survive updates.

Also, not all of those files can be modified in a child theme (I believe td_wordpress_booster.php can’t, for example). For those ones, you would have to copy the function in question into your child theme’s functions.php, make your changes, and rename the function. Then either change all references to the function in other files, or it’s a hooked action or filter, unhook the parent functions and hook yours in. (There are a few tutorials out there for this.)

Even if you use a child theme, you would want to watch for updates that affect functions and styles you’ve changed and do your changes over again, but it’s not as big a deal.

A block 10 is also included in the latest update, so you’d want to rename your custom one to avoid it being overwritten.

It’s a nice update but it seem it was rush out,because even the new page font they add seem to don’t work either..i had to go back to my CSS code,they will fix it next week all these bugs,we just have to keep reporting them..

yep. they should test it properly and then release it. it is so annoying because i haven’t received any proper updates with no bugs. small bugs are OK but bugs like these are just too much.

I can’t even find it after i update,i have a feeling this update have bugs,because the new block 10 is no where in the VC are the youtube block,oh well we just have to wait too monday for a fix…

Is there any chance it will be the opportunity to change sidebar and content width maybe next update? The content part way too narrow for me and i saw here one more question about how to narrow sidebar, this feature might be useful

I was able to rearrange them correctly! Thanks for your mini tutorial! Didn’t know that there is also a single_template_2.php file.

It just makes sense that the subtitle should be below the title, right? I hope TagDiv could get this fixed on the next update. It would be more like the one in The Verge.
