Hi there at TagDiv,
The backend of our WP-theme Newspaper 8 has slowed down to a 40 seconds-plus loading speed when editting or creating post, pages or opening the Media Library. Also starting up TagDiv Composer on a (new) page is extremely slow. We have tried everything we could find, like disabeling all the plugins and enabeling them one for one again. Allocating more memory through wp_config.php according to TagDiv specifications, etc. Nothing seems to work. Frontend of our site is flying (well, fast loading). Restored backups of website and database a few times also. We don’t know what we can do to fix this problem. Checked PHP memory: fine, Server specs: great, so we realy need some help here.
Our newswebsite http://www.regioonline.nl is online since January, 14th 2017 using the WP Newspaper theme. We have about 1.100 post to date and approx. 4.500 images. With the theme we use the following plugins: Akismet Anti-Spam, Autoptimize, Better Delete Revision (deactivated), Contact Form 7 & Contact Form 7 add confirm, Cookie Bar, HTML Import 2, Image Watermark, Oypo (deactivated), Physical Custom Upload Dir for Real Media Library, Really Simple SSL, Yoast SEO.
We have used WP Supercache several times, but that did nothing for us. Yesterday installed and used Better Delete Revision and cleaned out redundend revisions (and set max revisions to 2 in wp_config). WP_Memory is set to 64M (even tried 512M with was possible acoording to our webhost One.com). We have a large amount of space (500GB) for our site and 8xCPU from the server. Only thing we can think of is maybe a corrupted database, but we don’t know how to check that of fix it. Enabeling repair in WP_Config did not work.
Any help is much appreciated in advance!

Yes, I am well aware having managed our own servers since 1996. However *most* web hosts are requiring https for http/2 as a standard with the ‘https everywhere’ movement.
Much like Google will be warning site visitors about “site not safe” for any website with an insecure form in October. Everybody *should* be moving to https. Period. We moved all our sites to https in 2004, not just the ecom systems on sites.
Obviously anybody who can read up on the topic knows that.
My point was that somebody trying to switch on http/2 on their server as a hosting client, where the server policy is to enforce https for http/2 will have errors and perhaps generate ‘port’ errors since there will be mis-match on secure/insecure ports, much like with mod_pagespeed couple years back (2013? wow time flies!) with mixed content.

For example on a Plesk/ONYX server, “Make sure that SSL support is enabled for the web site in the Hosting Settings section of the domain. HTTP/2 is supported for SSL sites only, so non-SSL sites will continue to work under HTTP /1.x. That is a restriction of nginx web server and web browsers.”
My comment was intended for the OP who might not understand what he/she is actually doing with this process.

Note – the freezing happens on various sites to lesser degree I noticed the other night myself, even on my own website … only happened when I first turned it on — and I’m now thinking that maybe the iPad was doing some kind of background refresh like getting iCloud photos or something — but not sure on that.
On a simple page with 100/100 pagespeed score, two logos, one photo, and font awesome, I noticed the slight freeze going down page at a certain point. Odd. On my page all the above fold CSS loaded up front, and using native ipad fonts other than FA.
Not theme specific — I also noticed this issue on LA Times where the page just died, and went blank partway down.
Later on, both worked fine — so I suspect some background process on iPad, but I don’t have a fancy “activity monitor” installed, and have not turned on the developer mode on my new iPad (had that on for old one). Need to connect to my computer to activate that.
But it was temporary — then worked just fine. Very weird.
Just adding to the “bizarro world” topic … nothing to do with this theme specifically, as I notice the “twitchy” behavior on multiple sites the other night — all around the same time; but then no issues later on (and I have a smooth scroll jquery thing too, so yeah — super noticeable)…..

Run your website through Google’s PageSpeed Insights for tips on how to optimize your website. Also put non-essential code at the bottom of your body, like Adsense and Analytics-code. 🙂

I know, Newspaper is compatible with AMP and Yoast SEO plugin, but are you seriously considering to support it by yourself? I mean, there’re many themes/templates on Envato that now supports AMP with a first-party plugin and a dedicated lightweight template for it (and to be honest there’s is a clone of your template, it has the same clean design, its name is Publisher).
The fact is that Google is now officialy supporting AMP and increasing indexing of the sites that use it (actually Google Adsense is suggesting me to use it to optimize my website.) so i’m extremely interested to use it. But here is the problem, there isn’t a dedicated AMP template that respect my website primary design (Newspaper) and i don’t want to buy another one, because i love Newspaper and i spent a lot of time to optimize my website at the best (92/90 Google Pagespeed).
So i’m here to ask you what are you doing about it.

Hey Chris, I’ve made my mind and stept off of AMP for now. Will optimize my pages further to make the speed go up and deliver a better user experience. Already upgraded to PHP 7.1, moved some non-essential JS-code to the bottom of the header, minified CSS + JS including above the fold optimization. It really works wonders so far. Have tried multiple times on a test-VPS to get http2 to run, but Custombuild 2.0 (DirectAdmin) doesn’t natively support it yet. The following tutorial for example:

Everything goes well, until cURL comes around the corner. Online checks don’t show my websites using http2, and the following command is not being recognized: ‘curl –http2 example.org’. Can’t get it set up right, but might have to do something with the ISO that my provider uses for CentOS 7 + DirectAdmin VPS’s.
Anyway, that’s not a story for this forum. 😀

Hey Chris, you bring up some very good points and for most parts I agree with you. I would be way happier without any form of AMP, especially since it could hurt SEO (double content). Since my website is targeting Netherlands and Belgium (written language is Dutch), the speed of the internet doesn’t really matter since we have both very good cable- as mobile connections. See the following:

The one major problem is when you’re content marketing products, which in return should deliver good DA-ratings (Domain Authority). The mobile pages that NewsMag delivers are working perfectly fine (with a few tweaks here and there). However, when trying to get content up in Google News, it’s more likely to happen with AMP-posts, simply because of the speed and simplicity they deliver. A normal page with cache gets loaded up in like 1.5 to 2.5 seconds, yet the AMP-version takes half a second or less, most of the time even lower than 200 milliseconds locally.
So to answer your question: No, the user experience doesn’t suffer when throwing AMP-pages out to just use the mobile version. Content marketing, on the other side, does in my current opinion. It also brings more maintenance and more chains in the line that could break.

1. I understood that the child theme can also not be future proof, if any of the files that I added in child-theme get modified in original theme as well.
But what about Styles.css and functions.php? How does child theme load style.css? Does it use stylesheets code from original theme and child theme both? If so, then how?
What if there are two codes written for customization of same elements on both original theme CSS and child theme CSS. Which will be finally displayed on the live website?
Does child theme makes calls from style.css and functions.php from both original theme and child theme to display it on live website?
Does this affect the speed of site as well?
There are manily few core font name, size and color changes done by me on the original style.css of my theme. How can I keep it secure and stable even when I make an update of the theme?
functions.php is usually remain unchanged with theme updates but for better update-proof ness, should I add the custom code to the child theme functions.php and remove it from main functions.php?
What will happen if I add these codes at both the functions.php ( theme and child theme), will it cause any conflict in any possible way?

Would you please advise if the codings below are incorrect or is there another alternative to removing the style and javascript for Contact Form 7 and JS Composer. Also the Newspaper/js/tagdiv_theme.min.js. They are slowing down the website speed.

I’ve been running speed tests on pages of my website and am getting results that are all over the place. Do most people using Newspaper theme also have a CDN like Cloudflare? I can’t tell if I should be happy with the results I’m getting on speed tests, or if I really should add a CDN. I’m getting lots of A’s on the tests, but also some F’s… Also, I’m careful to optimize my photos for the Web using Photoshop and Optim, but I always get messages that they could be optimized more. Don’t know how… Someone told me today I should add a plugin for Gzip compression.
