Ah ok, so not even a way in the database to filter or search for a key tag or phrase to find the posts that maybe a smart list? Ok wow this will be tricky in a list of 5800 blogs!

Hi Bettina, I have gone through the documentation here https://forum.tagdiv.com/smart-lists/ on Smart Lists but maybe I am missing the information on how to find which posts I have already created as a smart list? I see the documention shows how to create a smart list and I know how to do that. I have created many over the years, at least 100 in fact. However I want to find those 100 posts that are smart lists in the backend of wordpress. I explain more here: https://share.getcloudapp.com/wbu98rvw so as you can see from that video I want to be able to find the posts I have created in the past that are smart lists?

I hope this is clearer now. Thanks

Hi Bettina, says it works much better in chrome like so https://share.getcloudapp.com/GGu60N9w whereas in firefox and safari not so well actually. So in chrome its fine. I guess I will resort to using Google Chrome then. Thanks

Hi Simion,
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction here. I was able to make the change now in the core plugin. A pity there is no real way to add into a child theme to protect against updates moving forward but I have made note of this now. Changing the top category grid layout to just allowed featured tags is the key for us as we have sponsored posts in our newspaper layout so we must continue to be able to alter this area. I am not sure if there are any plans to have an option in the theme options to be able to associated a tag for each category called featured_category name for example and then those featured posts stay in that area – who knows:)

At least now we have it all setup again the way we need it. Appreciate the time.

Thanks you.

Some additional info you may need to help us.

I have put our child theme in dropbox so you can see the file we used.

The file I’m referring to can be found in the child theme: Newspaper-child/includes/category_top_posts_styles/td_category_top_posts_style_2.php

That would override the parent theme file and show the grid we wanted based on a wordpress shortcode.

You can find that file here in dropbox:

Updating the post:

I am not sure if that file / folder is even used in the new theme. Can you point me in the direction of how to edit it in the new theme?

I tested this by renaming the parent themes folder includes/td_category_top_posts and it didn’t break the theme and I was still able to select different category grid styles in the Theme Panel so I’m guessing this file / folder or method of overriding is redundant?

Thanks,

James

Hi Calin, ok no worries, its odd the main Events Calendar plugin works fine and then the pro plugin creates the tags to reverse order here. I have opened a ticket with them also and lets see what they say back. I feel alot of people using the base Events Calendar plugin would like to upgrade to the pro version of the plugin when using your theme so I think its an important fix. Thanks

Hi Calin, I have tracked the issue here down to The Events Calendar plugin Pro and basically when its active all the tag sections rearrange to show the oldest first like here: https://wp.mykidstime.com/tag/autumn/

I will contact them about it also and see if there is a fix but maybe you can also tell now what might be up here maybe with this plugin conflict. I would like the theme to work with this plugin as I use events heavily and when the Events Calendar plugin is active its fine but then when you activate the Pro version of the plugin it breaks things as I originally mentioned.

Thanks

Thanks Calin

Unfortunately we are using visual composer quite heavily throughout, so this leaves me in a bit of a bind. Any other ideas?

Thanks

Hi Calin,

Please see here how our tag template in the Newspaper theme does not have the option you have there under “TDB Tag Templates”.

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘cloud’ template. Is that one of the other themes from Tagdiv?

Thanks

Hi Calin, just to confirm we are talking about the same issue here. I realize the theme is made to show the news articles and posts and have no issue with that. The issue I am having is to just change the order of the tagged pages to show the most recent posts first. is this also what you are referring to before I email off I just wanted to confirm? Thanks James

@Bogdan B. I have tried resaving the permalinks without any luck. I have now sent you on the FTP access via that email address you provided.

Thanks in advance

@chris thanks for the prompt reply. So what I did was make a backup of the entire site here and then deactivate all plugins on the site so that the only thing running is the theme itself and still an error here: http://www.jamjosandbox.com/news/featured/simple-form-creation-and-storage-built-for-developers/ if you click on the breadcrumb.

So I am a little stumped on this one as no plugin is running and still I get this bad request error that opens a new tab when I click on the breadcrumb.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

@Catalin, thanks for this and apologies for the duplicate post here.

allmyhoney

@Bogdan thanks for this, appreciate it. When you say most people do not like duplicates you may not be actually correct here because I am not trying to create a duplicate further down the category view as such. I have a custom grid in place that has a filter by a tag – therefore if I featured via a tag 4 posts in my grid at the top of the category layout then 4 of my most recent posts in that category do not show at all.

Right now your grid section on category area only shows the most recent 4 posts in this grid at the top of the category area and most certainly not everyone wants the most recent posts in this area. Therefore all I am trying to do here is get the 4 more recent posts to show in the first place as currently the offset hides them altogether.

Your code only checks for the 4 most recent posts in this grid – not the 4 posts that are tagged by a featured tag for example. Alot of news sites want to show the editors choice in this area, or popular articles in this area – rarely latest articles in this area as the news teams and editors would have no idea in the first few hours or day if these are the posts that should be filtered on this category layout. I have worked in many publications over the years and just showing the latest 4 posts in this grid area is the least popular choice by all the companies and all the editors – featuring popular or tagged or most commented posts in this area is much more important.

As I say thanks for this information but it would be nice in the future to see more options here for the grid as currently its extremely limited.

Thanks again for your time.

Thank you for letting me Simion, this solved my issue. Thanks

I found the solution here under Block Settings > Meta Info in the theme panel. Just incase others need this.

I have gotten word that it will not be supported for now as other features are taking priority. The only way around this is to deactivate your theme and then set the menu roles and then reactivate your theme each time. It will work then. Hope this helps

Thanks Bogdan,

I will add in some custom code and use the template footers for examples.

Bogdan,

Thanks for the response and informing me how this works. I have had enough posts in nay of my sandbox site now for the categories to see this button. I will watch out for this when I import all the archives. Have a great day.

Cheers

Hi Simion,

Thank for you taking the time to help me out with that good advice. In the end for the first issue of the grid, decided for infinite scrolling which sort of removes paging issues regardless.

On the second issue, successfully implemented a version of what you discribed above by customising Style 2 on the top posts grid. I had to actually also customise it by category so added some logic for that extra detail.

Anyways, all good and it’s starting to look good now. Again thanks for the help 😉

Cheers

@catalin I was simply pointing out that it would be a nice to have due to visbility of menu items being important these days. I realzie now that you all in tagdiv took the decision to not support these types of plugins way back in the past but its surprising that that has not changed. I love the theme and never said I needed a refund at all. As I said before I am going to code this in myself and create a work around for it. Thanks for your time.

@catalin can you let me know where I add this to the customer requests here (ideas board of some sorts?) and I will try and highlight it. I would highly doubt this would not be a popular request considering the popularity of woocommerce, easy digital downloads, wp members, restrict content pro, woocommerce membership and so on. Anyone using these will have to control the visibility of the menu items. I can flag this correctly in a customer ideas thread if you have this facility and then customers can actually vote correctly on the topic.

allmyhoney

@Bogdan B no membership plugin will work with your theme actually if you cannot hide menu items for logged in users. Yes there is the coding method of course and custom development but that is a major set back for those who want to use membership plugins out of the box. in fact you advertise woocommerce support for the theme and yes it works well but without the ability to hide certain menu items easily then even woocommerce becomes difficult to use frankly. I am surprised in over 2 years of flagging this issue that nobody on your team has bothered to test actually – that is another worry for people who might want to choose your theme here. Most theme developers would test plugins when flagged with them, especially after 2 years of people raising the issue. I will look to the custom method now.

wow I am disappointed here as I assumed an easy fix here! This thread started in 2015 and I know its not easy to fix this but its 2017 and people use woocommerce, they use restrict content pro and EDD and lots of other membership plugins on their sites these days and really anyone doing anything with a membership plugin needs to restrict and hide the menu items from time to time! so ultimately it seems this theme is not good for membership sites at all. The work around is to deactivate the theme and activate another make the menu changes and activate again which is alot of work on a large website with alot of moving parts!! I have used over 200 themes at this stage over 10 years and this is the first one to experience this problem and it being such a popular theme it seems odd that this was not addressed in 2 years. Anyways I am here for selfish reasons but I would imagine this is a strange one for most customers looking at this thread.
