The hosting company affects the situation by blocking the file to protect their server, otherwise the usage wouldn’t necessarily cause a server to go down. They also affect it by the limitations of their hardware (CPUs and storage, etc.). However, admin-ajax.php is an issue with WordPress due to the Heartbeat API since about WP 3.5 or so.

Search the plugin repository for a plugin called Heartbeat Control and install it. It’s a very simple and lightweight plugin. Once you install and active it, go to your settings menu to find the settings for the plugin. It only has two settings. I’d recommend setting it to allow only on post/page edit screens and 60 second intervals.

That plugin will reduce the majority of your requests, allowing you to unblock admin-ajax.php and still server traffic, even at 8k visitors at once. I’ve used it on VPS and shared hosting to reduce the number of queries. You don’t need Heartbeat API doing anything outside of the post edit pages in 99% of cases.

And as some people are commenting on the forums already, Speed Booster also loads default theme colors for a split second before the modified style settings are enforced. So it’s definitely a use at your own discretion sort of thing.

I’d say a caching plugin is required to use with News Mag, but the Speed Booster plugin is entirely optional and depends on several variables including your theme colors and the amount of plugins loading javascript on each page. If you don’t have a large .js load then Speed Booster may not be needed at all.

Speed Booster is not a cache, so if you want caching you’ll have to activate another plugin that handles that.

Personally, I’ve found that using WP Fastest Cache and not using TD Speed Booster has my site working the fastest in all environments. It gave me a 20 point jump after all other optimizations over using Speed Booster and W3 Total Cache. I never liked W3TC; too much bloat and no where near enough results.

Sorry to be captain obvious here, but if he is able to use everything properly on another domain on the same machine – as he says – then VC isn’t the problem. Nor is the memory limit.

@Orlando I’d suggest making sure you have the latest version of WordPress, and then I’d FTP a fresh copy of WordPress over your existing copy to remove any issues within the files. Whatever the problem is, it’s not Newsmag or Visual Composer causing the issue. Shouldn’t be server config either.

It is AdSense being used, but through a third party vendor. Sucks if that’s the case. What’s the best way around it then?

Of course. I haven’t really gotten the hang of adding new blocks and modules to that yet. I meant what I said, they’re good ideas, not better ideas. So I’d like to add those blocks to the theme, not modify the blocks already in the theme.

I’ve done a bit of research on it, too. Unless you purchase VC independently, it’s not easy finding info on adding modules to it. This theme and Newspaper only further complicate reverse engineering it with added code, styles and functions.

You would access that option by editing the page where those sub-headings appear. The screen shot I showed you is of the page builder (Visual Composer). If you had a developer build the site for you, I’d say he/she isn’t finished until that’s edited, but also that whoever setup your home page knows how to edit these block titles.

Search the plugin repository, bound to be something there for the added content functionality. I’ve never found a good one myself so the slider option Alin mentioned is quite viable. Code Canyon might have something, though.

Every block has this section boxed in green – the Block Title. That’s where you edit the sub-headings you’re talking about.

Yep, still happens without plugins; disabled everything but VC.

The code is from AdZerk but it’s regular responsive AdSense ads that show up on the site.

I’d second this, with some modification.

Perhaps being able to choose after x posts to display the ad (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.) would be good. Can optionally use the same ad on categories and tag archives with one ad spot. I”d be down for this.

Alright, don’t kill me, but I really like three of the modifications they made to the theme.

The centered, high focus title text makes that grid looks a lot better than it already does.

The white overlay behind the title is a nice block option and compliments Block 13 well with a smaller version.

Having the title above the image and excerpt is a nice touch.

Shame on the dude for stealing the work, but I’ll be damned if he didn’t have a couple of good ideas though 😉

That works. Of course that link doesn’t help since I’m not trying to use infinite scrolling. Is this something that’s just missing or is it in the documentation somewhere?

Have used a few hosts with tagDiv themes and never had this issue. Of course, I’ve never had an issue that included a sales pitch to upgrade my account at the end either. Seems to me, they just want you to upgrade.

I’d agree that you should cache your site, but the theme isn’t the problem. A plugin could be doing it, or you could have users keeping an admin page open all the time causing the built-in WordPress heartbeat API to run your server resources a muck. Check out a plugin called Heartbeat Control – you can get it from your Add New plugins panel in the WordPress backend. Fixes a lot of issues with shared hosting.

Follow the update instructions.

The social counter plugin must be updated separately, since it’s a plugin. Look in your download for the plugins folder and upload the updated plugin via ftp.

Of course, you do still have the old names in the shortcodes showing up, so you could just go each one and update the name of the shortcode. Actually might be faster than recreating them all. Just my 2 cents.

Correct. The update log for 1.5 stated some block identifiers were changed and advised you to record your blocks before updating so you could make the updates.

Did you update the plugin directly? NewsMag 1.5 came also with an updated version of the social counter plugin in the plugins folder – you have to update that manually (ftp) and separately from the theme.

The image was default after a content import from my main blog to my development blog, where I’m customizing the theme. This is done on different domains (localhost is a PITA to set up things like Jetpack, which is needed). Selecting to download attachments during the import process does not actually download the attachments; usually just remotely links to them.

I’ve corrected the issue already so I can’t show you a screenshot. Thought I’d pass it along.

That plugin looks like it hasn’t been updated since 2010. Good bet that’s why it won’t work on a modern theme.
