I’d start by disabling plugins. I had the same issue due to a plugin conflict with Themewich shortcodes. About the only one I can tell you is not causing your issue is Easy Social Share Buttons (I use that plugin on this theme without any issues). I’d be surprised if the Thrive Visual Editor plugin isn’t causing you some problems, though. Check them all.

You can do that with Visual Composer. Go to Settings > Visual Composer and turn it on for Posts. Then, on the posts you want centered like that, turn off the sidebar and go into the VC backend editor, change the row layout to 1/4 + 1/2 + 1/4 and use a text block in the center column. If that’s too narrow, just remember the row layout is any combination using fractions larger than 1/12. So 1/8 + 6/8 + 1/8 would give you a wider center column for text than 1/4 + 1/2 + 1/4.

It won’t allow you to go full-width with images throughout the post, as in your example, but that’s because this is a newspaper/magazine theme and that feature is more creative or photography.

But it will produce the desired layout without much effort and no coding. Play around with it a bit.

Correction, this feature does not work on latest version of FireFox, but it is working on Chrome.

To be clearer, remote images simply will not display in smart lists.

A plugin might be best. I recommend StarBox. Works very well, looks better than 99% of those out there, is free (Plugin Repository), gives you easy options for where to display (natural position like the theme and in widgets), and allows you turn it off per author. Easier than including an if statement to check against the current author.

Well that’s what you can use the custom page template for, to add classes. Then again, depending on what you’re trying to do overall, VC can handle what you need.

Just create your page using the default page template with the articles list and add the styles for that page to the page via the VC page settings (grey cog at the top right of the editor screen). You can also edit rows and columns and enter custom CSS there as well.

If you’re just wanting to change how things look, and not move things around, then you should using custom CSS. Use FireFox or Chrome to open the existing page, right click on the part you want to modify and select “Inspect Element” from the context menu. You can see the style classes and IDs used to target your CSS changes.

Well keep in mind that getting a new page template is the easy part. In order to make use of the loop feature after the page content and other features from Newspaper, you’ll have to study the functions and tags used by tagDiv and use them in your custom template. It’s not always easy to connect the dots on some of the functions so just remember to ask questions about specific issues here on the forum so they can help you.

That’s about it. Of course there are situations when an upgraded plugin requires some changes to the theme that may delay the upgrade of that plugin even there are theme updates available. For example, VC recently updated from v2.x to v3.x and we got three or four theme updates before they upgraded the VC plugin, because of the changes in the theme required.

So yes, as far as bundled plugins, go with tagDiv’s updates and rest assured they’ll keep all features within Newspaper copacetic.

That should be the file page-homepage-loop.php in the root directory of the Newspaper theme. Copy the contents to a new file named page-homepage-custom.php and edit the following line at the top of the file.

To read like:

/* Template Name: Homepage - Custom with articles */

Then upload that changed file to the theme directory root where you found its source. The new page template should now be showing in the templates drop-down menu on the editor screen. Make your desired changes to that file.

Yeah it bugs me too, especially when VC updates and there’s no new update on the theme yet. The phantom update notice and all.

But licensing prohibits tagDiv from giving out a license to VC, which would allow you to update the plugin directly, and the VC plugin has been well customized by tagDiv for seamless integration with Newspaper. If you were to get the plugin update outside of a Newspaper release, things on your site would break because features missing, added, and altered from the core release of VC.

I’ve noticed that when checking responsiveness in my browser that the sidebar bounces around a little weird near tablet resolution. I guess BS3 devs want to increase the trend of off the map resources from just menus to include sidebars too. Not a bad idea actually. But must be a pain to deal with until that’s done. **Hint Hint** tagDiv

Had no idea about that issue. Come to think of it, lost my primary hard drive last week and had to install win7 64bit on my secondary and then again on the new HDD that arrived Sunday. Updates ran and IE is at 11 (Windows copy is from 2 years ago) and had no issues. I’ve yet to so much as select recommended settings for POS11, but that’s covered already.

I wouldn’t even hesitate to stop calling it “mobile first” since that’s not what it is anymore. That concept started with smartphones and has grown to include all sorts of tablets that act as much like a computer as anything but a computer can. Resolution is the issue, of course.

One way to “guess” the version is to look at the td-bootstrap.css file and look for any of the styles unique to BS3 such as for tables, the semantic changes to button classes, etc.

I have yet to find anyone, outside of office and corporate networks, still running <= IE9, even with XP, which is fine because FF and Chrome work on those systems. Let’s call this the giant label on my forehead that says I hate IE and do not support it for my users. Some of the best technological minds in the world at Microsoft, and they’re still spending too much time trying to increase market share instead of making the most of a market that refuses to cave.

Come to think of it, I’ve already come across 3 premium plugins on Envato that I bought for use with Newspaper, and bootstrap was the source of the conflict. Wasted $68 already so trying not to make that $90.

I know Newspaper uses some of BS3 based on the viewport meta tag use, but that isn’t everything. I need to know what version Newspaper customized to really answer this one, I think. The plugin author has some questions on it as well, basing it off of the 2.3.1 version of BS, so we’ll see how much it matters from his point of view too.

According to the change log for version 4.2.1 it was fixed – “fix categories display in Theme panel -> Categories”

No work around that I know of. Didn’t check on v4.2.1 if it was fixed before I upgraded to 4.2.2, but doubt it disappeared for a single version and then came back.

Looked at your site and pulled the source – your OG tags are present and look to be in good working order. The problem you’re having sounds more like the Facebook app setup is erred. Make sure you have your domains and content type setup correctly in your Facebook app, as that can give you the error described.

Also remember that the Facebook debug tool often requires several refreshes with newly scraped data to update the cache on Facebook. Try five or six times and see if that helps. In either case, Newspaper is doing what it should. Also try to repeat the process on several posts and see if any differences are found in the results.

Big deal should be an understatement from what I understand. Mine is more of a cursory interest in the industry as I love to dabble and have some income riding on related issues. Didn’t Google basically trash the most well-known and used SEO strategies while implementing authorship shortly after launching G+? Talk about much ado about nothing… years later.

Let’s hope. My experience with G+ on these matters has been 99.5% consistent for over a year now – only had one or two posts show up on G+ via the automatic JetPack feature with any issues at all. One was no image, and one was the url with no image or title. That includes my old primary site, and its new reinvention, as well as four other sites using various themes and much less posting post frequency.

Gonna have to check up on the changes to authorship. Seems odd they’d reverse any of that after making such a huge push to revamp the SEO industry with authorship involvement the last few years. Thanks for the tip.

No, I’m actually getting the same thing as you, duplicate og:image tags that both point to the featured image. And I’ve actually dropped Yoast on my primary site thanks to the numerous issues the plugin has. SEO Ultimate is working nicely. But I’ve tried both to see if this issue is affected by it, no dice.

Facebook is working perfectly. Also using Jetpack publicize. Until this last theme update the google plus posts were excellent, as were Facebook and twitter. Now, the latter two are fine but google is missing the featured image. Even more strange, to me, is that when manually posting to google it only shows my logo, an ad, and the author image as options. That’s whether I post to google via my ESSB plugin or manually from my google profile.

My point is, if it’s google having an issue then that was some pretty fantastic timing that the issue started on the post immediately following the theme upgrade. No clue how that works out, if it is the theme, but I gotta go with a plausible theory in this case, not some far-fetched coincidence.

Having the same kind of problem since the 4.2.1 update, Chris. Mainly on Google+ sharing. Using Yoast and Easy Social Share Buttons from Code Canyon the image attached to the share is my logo, not the featured image. All posts get a featured image and this started happening immediately following the latest theme update.
