Hello folks…
I know I was one of the people who complained about so many requests for WooCommerce fixes for Newspaper a year ago saying “who needs a shopping cart for a newspaper theme …. ” while waiting for initial development on v2 and v3 … soooooo …. 🙂
So, ironically, now that I’m using Newsmag for our ecom system (only for store, not for the entire site, in this case)…. I’ve run into couple of format quibbles with the tablet/iPad (iPad Air/Retina), so this impacts any iPad after iPad 3.
Three screen shots:
1) This shows how in portrait the body layout for the grid is apparently munched just a tad, when on a category page, so that third item drops to second row, and “runs into” item 4 which should start second row. Note in screen shot 3, at bottom of a product page, the items flow properly. Thumbs are 200×200 in the grid. Maybe 190×190 would work?
2) Similarly, on the product view page, the summary drops below picture due to couple of pixels expansion, as with the grid on the category view (image 1). Image is 307×307; perhaps 300×300 would fix?
3) This shows bottom of product page (screen 2); where oddly the three columns are not munched in the grid, while they are on the category page. Thumbs here same ones as category page at 200×200.
Any help on minor CSS tweaks for the two grids
a) product page: [image][summary]
b) category page [item1][item2][item3]
would be totally awesome!
GTmetrix.com is useful for newbies as it shows examples and also offers fixes such as optimized versions of problem images and minified elements for those unable to do that stuff themselves. I usually recommend it as opposed to Google’s own Pagespeed Insights, since Google doesn’t really explain very well how to fix anything. GTM also has a plugin you can use to chart your improvements (or they did anyway).
I will admit I have worked with their parent company for 15 years several times on client projects, hence my high level of trust.
Still – one needs to follow the advice provided by ANY of the docs, posts, or online tools, as starting point to optimize a site; it won’t fix itself 🙂
Hi, I’m setting-up an Italian/English site with Newspaper 4.6.1 and qTranslate-X 2.9.6 and I need some help
1 – At the bottom of any post there are the “previous article” and “next article” with the links showing the articles titles. Right now the theme shows both the italian and english title at the same time

2 – At the bottom of the homepage I have a full width Block 1 showing child categories menu using ajax. If I click on a child category, the block loads title and excerpts always in italian, even if the page is set in english. Clicking on a post redirects to the post in the correct language.

3 – I tried to modify the appearance of the language menu using the string #qtransLangSwLM&title=none# to hide the word “language”, as per qTranslate-X faq, but it doesn’t work.

Don’t test with GTMetrix it is not really accurate to be honest. Use this tools.pingdom.com. For example I test my website and also big website names such as cnet.com etc for example for cnet in GTmetrix it shows sometimes 3 seconds sometimes 20 seconds sometimes 6 seconds it is not really efficient… Another example just tested pcmag.com it shows 10 seconds. Overall I don’t use GTMetrix because I think pingdom has more servers to test and consistent test speed and results you can try it yourself and see!

Did you add the items to your htaccess file ? Doesn’t look like it.
You need to do EVERYTHING ELSE before messing with the speedbooster plugin customizations, which are optional and entirely up to you.
You need to take care of ALL the other issues EXCEPT for “render blocking CSS/javascript” first or the latter will do nothing for your site. That step is done LAST to get the last couple of points, not the 25-30 points you’re down right now due to all the other issues that ONLY YOU can manage.
Web server optimization is up to you, and is related to optimizing WORDPRESS, not the theme. Tech support here is for the THEME, and not to teach you how to manage your web server … folks here are helping on that as time permits, but you have to take the initiative to LEARN how to do that — WordPress has been around 10 years — lots of tutorials on the web. “How to optimize WordPress for best Pagespeed” … simple search in Google, for example.
And all the links in this thread — SHOW YOU a number of things you should do, but you need to do that.
Nobody ignoring you — you need to fix your own house, that is YOUR job to tackle.
You’ve read the docs … well, now you need to actually *do* some of the guidelines or they won’t work.
Fix your htaccess file; make sure you have compression running, and expiration headers; optimize your images; minimize external elements loading on your site; etc. — ONLY YOU can do that stuff. If it means nothing to you, then you likely will need to hire a developer to help you.

How to make my images back to the ones that are original? they all are of high qualities but after uploading to wordpress they lost there quality i know there is a reduce in the quaility but this is too much ridiculous here see the sample in the first message of this thread!
Oddly they seemed to work when I did some in the visual editor, but not in the text editor. But then later on they did work.
So, Newsmag stock = bullets don’t work for me.
Newsmag running WooCommerce, bullets work.

You can try simply using & bull; temporarily …. (no space after the ampersand)
This forum has the same encoding issue as the theme, ironically. If I put the ascii code for bullet in the code box, it converts it into an ISO element, and prints in in the text box. Argh.

I notice that when I attempt to access the parent link on a drop down menu set the top link would not work on iPad. And if there are sub-menus involved only the lowest link is accessible on iPads. For example if the setup is Link>sublink>sub-sublink only the sub-sublink is clickable on iPad. This is also true for mega menu parent links. Please advise. Thank you!

Is there anyway to expand what files you can modify with the child theme?
For example, I am modifying the Author Box (see another thread of mine). It is not in the includes/modules folder but instead in the includes/shortcodes folder and therefore isn’t overwritten by the child theme.
Also, trying to modify the JS file to remove smart scrolling (because it doesn’t work with Macs). Again, this can’t be modified through the child theme.
On a future update, I may lose these modifications if this file is changed.

Yes, that is normal. The size of the font used in the admin panel is not the same as you might have on the website, and the theme is responsive, so the “actual” width will vary as far as word-wrap.
Again, the visual editor is not a “what you see is what you get” editor like you have in print publishing; it’s an “approximation” … it’s not “pixel accurate” … partially because the WordPress admin uses CSS from WordPress, while the actual page uses CSS from the theme.
So, the value in the visual editor is in doing elements like alignment, pre-viewing photos and videos, or MP3 audio, bolds, italics and other “presentation formatting” … but it is *not* a 1:1 view of the actual page. This is true of WordPress and always has been.
So, in your last example, it’s working correctly. You cannot manage exactly where line breaks are, or word-wrapping as the font and kerning, and so forth may vary based on the device being used.
So, on one device you might have 7 words, another 6 words and the 7th word goes to next line due to letter spacing, kerning, and the space between letters (not to date myself here, but I went to Compugraphic Typesetting school in 1985… so kind of savvy on font issues).
Upshot; based on your screen shots above… you’re just fine. 🙂
I think the tagdiv speed booster plugin helps with this in theory by putting all the css and js at bottom of page, but that can also cause some things to load in odd order since sometimes a menu might use jquery …. one of those things you kind of have to experiment with.
Probably need to put link to an example post page so the TagDiv admin folks can take a peek just to see whassup.
First thing they always look for is console errors (F12 in Chrome or IE11), and often that can reveal the culprit, if any.
Last week any of my pages with a YouTube video loading would slow down part of the page, when Google was having major hiccups. This would then slow down AddThis … since I had the video and Addthis loading in order last on page … the whole page would render except blank video box and blank addthis box … (not using this theme, but a home-brew thing). That worked as expected …. except that I wanted to share stuff via addthis and it was taking 60 second for video to load. Annoying.
Anyway… I digress 😉
I would like option to DISABLE the custom functions being loaded for the visual editor, if possible. I’m having some issues when also using WooCommerce. The visual editor, for example, shows bullet lists with indents, but there is no indent on the actual page. The divider line is actually a hindrance when editing some things as I need to keep scrolling more up and down to get to the info I need to edit.
I would prefer normal WP behavior where the visual editor allows you to set bolds, italics, center things, etc., but not try to second guess the page layout which will vary by device.
Also, running into an issue where when switching to visual editor some HTML entities get converted to ISO elements, and then when going back to text editor, they lose the encoding, and in the published page under view source you have ISO garbled characters.
Overall, great idea, but causing some issues, obviously.
An option to DISABLE this custom mods to the visual editor would be appreciated.

1. You need custom modification to add effects to images as the them doesn’t have any options for that. You can also try to find and use a plugin or try to do it yourself or hire a developer/freelancer, if you don’t have any basic css/html knowledge, to helps you with it.

I’m not sure but I believe you would need to alter the single forum template for it and customize it ad you like as I haven’t noticed any option for this.

You can do that with Visual Composer. Go to Settings > Visual Composer and turn it on for Posts. Then, on the posts you want centered like that, turn off the sidebar and go into the VC backend editor, change the row layout to 1/4 + 1/2 + 1/4 and use a text block in the center column. If that’s too narrow, just remember the row layout is any combination using fractions larger than 1/12. So 1/8 + 6/8 + 1/8 would give you a wider center column for text than 1/4 + 1/2 + 1/4.
It won’t allow you to go full-width with images throughout the post, as in your example, but that’s because this is a newspaper/magazine theme and that feature is more creative or photography.
But it will produce the desired layout without much effort and no coding. Play around with it a bit.
