Ok I seemed to have found the issue, I had these lines in my functions.php within my child theme:

if (!defined(‘TD_THEME_WP_BOOSTER’)) {
include TEMPLATEPATH . ‘/includes/td_config.php’;
include TEMPLATEPATH . ‘/includes/wp_booster/td_wp_booster_functions.php’;
}

Removing them seems to work out fine. Will let you know if I have any further issue.

Hi,

I’m having trouble while manually updating from 2.1 to the latest version of Newsmag.
I’m using ftp to do so, I renamed the “old” folder Newsmag to a different name and uploaded the latest version instead. I’m also using a Child theme and wp_super_cache (which I flushed as well)

So with the latest version I get the following errors on any page, even in the wp-admin panel:

I think you have to look at the changelog and see if any of the child files got changed. This is why I don’t use child themes; as sometimes with major updates the child theme changes along with the main theme, which kind of defeats the purpose in my opinion. 🙂

Chris, thanks for the insight. I’ve updated the plugins immediately after upgrading. The parent theme seems to work, but using a child theme for modifications is preferred.

In the update instructions, there’s no mention of updating the child theme.

You may need to update the child theme — see changelog; try launching the main theme only.

You also need to update plugins as well as theme!

Before updating, I also deleted the old Newsmag theme file and deactivated the child theme. Then, uploaded the new Newsmag version. Now the child theme shows that series of errors. I’ve tried to follow the upgrade instructions exactly.

Hello laraklopp,

Unfortunately, as you can see in our documentation about child theme support, here -> https://forum.tagdiv.com/the-child-theme-support-tutorial/ the td_social_icons.php code file do not support child theme and if you want to do some changes on this you have to make it only in the main theme. Also, please notice that in next future update, all the customization will be lost.
For your second request, is just an example for WhatsUp implementation and that code is already loaded in our theme. You have to find on the web another fonts family, download on your PC and try to implement it in Newspaper. In order to achieve result, you have to follow this mini guide ->

You can try to regenerate fonts like this:

1. go to https://icomoon.io/app
2. button “import icons”, import from newsmag.svg (in /images/icons/),
3. select all icons;
4. button “generate font”, button “download”;
5. copy the 4 files (.eot, .svg .ttf .woff), in “fonts” folder in the downloaded zip file, rename icomoon.* to newsmag.*, replace old files, done.

Please notice that is only for the advanced user. If you are not aware the steps, please consider to hire someone with a high experience in domain to implement this functionality for you in our theme because we cannot provide custom services at the moment, sorry!

Hi, thank you, I don’t need custom services, I just need to know the steps for adding new icons. I believe you answered my question with the links you provided, but I have a few follow-up questions.

First, when you showed the alteration to the php file in the screenshot, you showed the alteration being made to the Newspaper file itself, rather than a Newspaper-child file – won’t that mean the changes get lost when the theme is updated?

Second, when you linked to the icon for Whatsup with a code in the CSS, I’m not sure where you got that code as the Whatsup icon. Where can I find the list of icons and their associated codes that I can refer to for this?

Hello aro_007,

Please try to update your child theme that comes bundled with the theme’s update folder and try to reconfigure it in the latest version of child theme, otherwise, the old child theme version could create some errors like in this case.

Hello,
Well, if the modification in the child theme is created in a file that was updated in the newer version, you will have to recreate the modification as well. The child theme is not ‘update proof’, it only delays the recreation of your modification for a while until the files in the main theme get modified. Then you need to adapt your modification to the new files and overwrite the ones in your child theme.

Hi Catalin,

Yes how you’re describing is exactly how I have it set up. If I have the child theme activated, even if I haven’t updated any files in the child theme, the content on the left spans the full width and the Widgetised Sidebar (via Visual Composer) shifts below. If I just deactivate the child theme, the Widgetised Sidebar (via Visual Composer) fills in the correct place.

We made an attempt to upgrade 6.5.1 to 6.6. Our design is using a child-theme structure and when we upgraded there were quite a lot of errors happening with the site and the way our data was being rendered. Am I missing something with the upgrade steps when using a child-theme as we’ve done?

Hi, i have a custom PHP codes running in 3 static pages. I have created the pages using the wordpress back-office, and writing the title and using the default template.

For example, the ID of one of them is 100, with slug “contacto”.

I folowed the Template hierarchy and re-named a copy of “/Newspaper/page.php” file in my theme child.

Single Page #

  • custom template file – The page template assigned to the page. See get_page_templates().
  • page-{slug}.php – If the page slug is recent-news, WordPress will look to use page-recent-news.php
  • page-{id}.php – If the page ID is 6, WordPress will look to use page-6.php.
  • page.php
  • singular.php
  • index.php

    • In my case i chosse using this name: page-archive.php (but i tested with page-100.php too)
    I am running this in mi localhost and in other hosting for testing purposes, and are working great.

    Working in a new server:
    The strange thing is that now, i have imported 160.000 news , and for an unknown reason this hierarchy don’t work any more. Now is working in localhost.. “the same files”!! but in the real production server this is not working.

    Then i created all these files with empty content. Only with the line <?php echo ‘page-slug.php’;?>.
    And they never load!.

    Why is this happening?.

    Hello,
    The database will contain your posts, pages, categories, sidebars, theme panel settings and any custom code you use in the theme panel. You will not lose any information when updating.
    Customization however will not be saved. And by customization i mean altering of the theme files. For that you will have to create a child theme, but even that is not safe as if the file you modify will get updated in a future version, you will need to update your child theme as well. The child theme does not provide an update-proof method, it simply delays the customization getting redone on every update but you will have to look in the changelog->modified files for every update to see if your modified file is on the list.

    No need to start a child theme, just edit the file in the main theme folder – it won’t implode. This is how we do it. Then just keep work folder on your hard drive (same place you should be keeping backups of all your content, images, mysql, dbase export, etc.), with note to self what you changed. Takes 5 minutes and get on with your life 🙂
