Hi,
our server has been overloaded in past by hackers, port flooding, bots reading all our pages 50x a day from Russia and China search bots.

CSF/firewall/IPtables on server protects against port scans, port flooding; blocks an IP for hitting your site 500x looking for vulnerability.

You can switch to default theme and not lose settings. Same thing as doing a site update, where you temporarily switch to default theme before updating the theme you’re using. I just updated to newsmag 1.4 today, switched to default theme, when I switched my theme back on, all settings still there. WP expects this behavior. 🙂

But yet … EVERYTHING you put on a sidebar, footer, menu which as to “go look and bring back stuff” is a dbase query.

You can look at the WordPress Codex also for topics on “optimizing database” and general info on how all the dbase queries work. But all those modules on home page are dbase queries, but it’s just one page, One million other pages with too many queries, would overload dbase, if all those pages were being loaded concurrently (all at once) such as a spider reading all your pages.

But your host can help you with stuff like checking to see if you’re being abused from external IP or not. Ideally you should be getting a daily summary for your server of intrusion attempts by IP, notes from server about FTP accesses, and if any of your hard drive partitions are being filled up.

But anyway, just some ideas. 🙂

Hi,

You don’t need to update/activate it as the updated and latest version it is added within theme’s files so you just need to download the latest theme version(4.6.1) from themeforest: http://themeforest.net/downloads ..then update your theme using this guide and the FTP method: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme/
After that remove the VC plugin and use this guide to install the VC plugin included within the /plugins folder that was included within the theme files you’ve downloaded from themeforest: https://forum.tagdiv.com/update-the-visual-composer-plugin-wpbakery/

Thanks

Hi,

You can download it from themeforest: http://themeforest.net/downloads
Yes, you do as the latest version of the theme is 4.6.1 and the option in panel to show the author under the title was added in 4.4 theme version: http://screencast.com/t/elMDqViQ so please make sure you update your theme and you will also have this option.
Please use the theme update guide and use the FTP method and also remember to make a backup of your current theme installation so in case something goes wrong you can revert back to it. Here are the docs on how to update the theme: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme/

Thanks

WHEW!!! Glad you folk got it sorted. I always do the updates via FTP now… it always works, while the WP panel installer is sometimes hit/miss.

I really need to restart my web dev blog ….. (!)

(I know, folks keep asking …. been super busy ….)

Hello Lucian, Chris,

Thanks a lot for your help and patience. I just uploaded all files manually via ftp and that did the trick.

🙂
try installing just the

Newspaper-tf/plugins/js_composer.zip

or, what works best is to unzip that folder, then FTP the entire folder to

/yoursite/wp-content/plugins/js_composer

If you’re trying to use the Envato tools plugin, punch yourself right now and stop (kidding). That has never worked right for us anywhere, anytime, even in an eggnog fueled dream haze (also kidding). 🙂

Also note you need to turn off any caching and CDN shenanigans before installing plugins, and you also need to fully eradicate any pre-existing js_composer folder, and *not* upload over the existing folder.

Maybe that helps somebody…. again, this is WordPress 101 folks.

Sorry if I sound like a crank. Worked most of the holiday and starting to sound like a bozo, I suppose.

You don’t install plugins by uploading the entire theme, fyi
Installing Plugin from uploaded file: themeforest-5489609-newspaper-wordpress_theme.zip

You install plugins by installing the actual plugin zip files found in the Newspaper theme folder under /plugins/ or in the similar folder found from download the “all files” option from ThemeForest.

So, if you upload the zip file and install each plugin one by one, it works.

If you unpack and upload the plugins individually by FTP (the best way to do it), guess what – it works.

It’s really up to you to learn how to manage your own WordPress site, and properly learn to install packages, zip files, or learn to upload individual folders via FTP.

“RTFM” on the WordPress.org codex to learn how WP works in detail.

But, really up to you if you want to blame the theme devs for not teaching you how WP works. Which is kind of crazy, in my opinion.

Hi,

@nuno
As Chris stated you don’t have to worry as the activation system was developed to stop mass piracy of the theme and I know this is an extra step for paying customers and it dose nothing else.
As for the them update we also recommend to do it manually and use this guide to do it via FTP: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-theme/

Thanks

Hi,

You do not have to worry about that as updating the theme will not remove the settings you’ve chosen only if the customizations where made to the theme files, in that case you can take note of the changes you’ve made any redo them after each update as the theme files will get overwritten.
Please always make sure you back-up your current theme installation so that you can revert back to it if something goes wrong.
Use this the FTP method from this guide to update the theme: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme/

Thanks

Hi,

I have removed the visual composer folder via ftp as you stated but I am still getting this error message when I try to reinstall it.

The plugin does not have a valid header.

Downloading install package from /home/katsdeli/public_html/review/wp-content/themes/Newsmag-child/includes/plugins/js_composer.zip…

Download failed. A valid URL was not provided.

Where can I down load the visual composer folder from, to upload via ftp?

Thank you,

Katrien.

Hi,

Please make sure that you deleted the plugin and also remove the plugins folder via FTP: http://codex.wordpress.org/Managing_Plugins#Uninstalling_Plugins
After this install the plugin from the plugins folder, do it like this: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-visual-composer-plugin-wpbakery/ but for the social counter plugin.
Hope this helps!

Thanks

I have been running wpsmush on my website but i keep noticing images aren’t being optimized. Thing is, when i send the smush option (to optimize all images), I get a count of 1700 images. But on the ftp i can count over 9,000. It seems at plain sight as though the original image is being optimized, but the other versions generated by the theme aren’t (the thumbnails, and slider and box sizes). Anyone else noticing this?

You can manually upload via FTP to the proper folder, and insert URL on the logo page and then press Save.

You can also upload via the media manager, then choose that image(s) from the set logo page in theme panel.

The theme cannot replace one image with another randomly. So, you may want to check your site/system setup, and make sure the image you’re uploading has a unique name. If you upload an image with existing name, WordPress will often rename it -2 or -3 etc. to not over-write existing image, and then the existing image with same name would load. e.g., “logo.jpg” would not be wise naming choice. Usually something like My-Site-Name-300×90.png would be advisable.

Best to fully delete js composer folder via ftp from plugins folder and then uplaod new version via ftp.

Hi,

You have modified the style.css?
What you can do is to replace all files via FTP but without style.css if yours is modified and then compare your style.css with latest from theme to see what differences are. You can use WinMerge for that.

If you have custom CSS in Theme panel -> Custom CSS section, that will be fine on each update.

Hope this help!
Thanks for the message!

Theme cannot break image location or remove items from your media lists/folder.

You should regenerate thumbnails to fit news sizes used in theme.

If you check your media/uploads folder via FTP, you might be able to check on the permissions for that folder. If you accidentally deleted that, it would not be recoverable; hopefully you backed up your site prior to making major changes.

An example image link, like so – does appear missing:
http://dance.land/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/nathan-barnatts-curious-dances.jpg

However installing the theme does not delete your /uploads/ folder unless you did that manually. If you deleted the /uploads/ folder, or the /wp-content/ folder for some reason, then that would have deleted the images folder.

Ideally you should double check with your hosting provider in case they have some bizarre setting which impacts that folder in some way.

Hi,

Could be due to a plugin. Login via FTP and follow this steps:

* start renaming your plugins folder names (not the “plugins” folder) one at a time starting from the less essential ones, if any.
* refresh login page
* try to login. If first attempt fails, try once more. On many occasions second try works.
* if it still fails, rename plugin folder name to original name.
* go to next plugin and repeat the steps

Please let me know if this solves your issue.

Thanks
