Thanks – I don’t really see the answer to the problem here. Are you saying that you see column lengths remaining the same regardless of browser or viewport size?

Mark Gilbert

Well, I’m using a 15″ MacBook (2880 x 1800 display) and seeing huge irregularities from browser to browser. What do you mean “to do with the terminal”?

And what about from viewport to viewport within Chrome? This vid shows movement from desktop to horizontal tablet to vertical tablet – huge discrepancy. Not exactly great responsiveness.

Ah – just to check, is your illustration – https://i.imgur.com/V9xHOJs.png – in Firefox?

Mark Gilbert

Here is the bottom of https://jazzjournal.co.uk in Chrome:

and in Firefox:

https://www.screencast.com/t/RsT4nF9d8Rrv

See how in Firefox the third column is much longer than in Chrome.

Column lengths are also very uneven in tablet views in the same browser. Maybe, despite so-called responsiveness, nothing can be done about tablet views, but certainly desktop should be consistent across browsers, no?

If you experiment with Safari, Chrome and Firefox you’ll see the effect for yourself. All looks very unprofessional, sloppy, doesn’t it?

OK – maybe I need to reinstall Newspaper. I’m seeing problems with Big Grid Flex boxes too.

Thanks – could you first check if you see a problem by testing Dashboard / Cloud Templates / Add New?

Mark Gilbert

Further investigation for you – I can load cloud library single post templates from a live post using the green Cloud button in the admin bar (about 10 seconds). But if I import, it immediately applies the template to the live post. I don’t want that – invariably cloud templates need editing and refinement. I want to import and then apply once customised. It seems this can only be done through Dashboard / Cloud Templates / Add New.

That is what is broken: if I go to Dashboard / Cloud Templates / Add New I mostly get a hang and after about 50 seconds “Invalid reply from server endpoint”. Can you fix this?

Mark Gilbert

I just noticed also that while cloud library is trying to load, everything else in admin, and site loading, slows. Looks like as it struggles it sucks up energy from elsewhere.

Mark Gilbert

I comply with requirements, as above. I just deactivated all plugins again. Still no load. That sign “Loading templates…” is clearly a matter of hope rather than fact…

It was obviously a matter of coincidence that cloud library loaded after I disabled https://wordpress.org/plugins/hide-admin-bar-based-on-user-roles/. Disabled now, along with everything else, it makes no difference.

I can load through “Cloud” option from a page like you have – but it’s slow (about 40 seconds) and of course only offers Blocks, Homepages, Pages, Sections. No single posts etc. The option through Dashboard has everything – when it occasionally loads.

Mark Gilbert

They just loaded for me through your admin page route after about 55 seconds. Something is wrong here, obviously.

Mark Gilbert

Is there any other way in to the cloud library other than “Add new”? Maybe that’s the broken link. I see, for example that some cloud material is loading ok through the “Prebuilt Websites” link under Newspaper in the Dashboard.

Mark Gilbert

Now it’s started again – Dashboard / Cloud Templates / Add New – hangs on blank, black page for a minute then gives “Invalid reply from server endpoint.”

I have changed nothing from last week when it loaded after 50 seconds or so.

You have my installation settings above.

Are you sure nothing is wrong your end? Many other comments suggest something is flaky here.

I don’t suppose Newspaper has thought of offering its own compatible hide-admin-bar plugin? What publisher wants the admin bar showing for all his/her users?

Mark Gilbert
tagDiv Member

54 seconds – any way to improve that?

Mark Gilbert
tagDiv Member

I deactivated https://wordpress.org/plugins/hide-admin-bar-based-on-user-roles/ and cloud library seems to be loading, if slowly (maybe it’s always slow).

That’s a shame, as I will lose use of a very useful plugin while browsing templates.

I should say that Newspaper status says:

256 MB/request

Does the “request” have any bearing on this problem? I.e., not necessarily granted?

Mark Gilbert
tagDiv Member

You mean make it 512mb? I am no expert in manipulating memory. I added the line define( ‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘256M’ ); as follows to wp-config.php. Is this correct, but now make it 512?

define(‘WP_DEBUG’, false);

define( ‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ‘256M’ );

/* That’s all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */

I should say I have never had memory above 40mb before and never had this problem, with the same plugins. I have very few plugins over the standard Newspaper ones and have tried deactivating the main ones. Still cloud template library doesn’t load.

Notifying myself of replies – rapid, I hope.

Can you give me a tip how to optimize my images and to identify which ones need optimizing? Looking at that page and your arrows, are they the jpg or other photo-type files in the list? I just upload 1200px jpegs as recommended.

Thanks.

Mark Gilbert

Does the image problem explain the poor, 50% performance rating? That site looks useful if only I knew how to remedy the problem.

Mark Gilbert
tagDiv Member

I don’t know what a waterfall image is, and I have never seen this problem before and have changed nothing.

But anyway, the image I sent you was of an edit-post page with no images, not a site page.

And now the edit-post pages are loading ok. Any idea what happened yesterday?

How do I optimise images? I always use 1200px jpg as recommended.

Thanks
Mark

The above in Safari – same post-edit loads ok at the moment in Chrome.
