Is it possible to get the social sharing (Stay connected http://themeforest.net/item/newsmag-news-magazine-newspaper/full_screen_preview/9512331) buttons from the newsmag template for my website (newspaper theme)?

I also would like to show user star ratings (post rating without login) by a few posts. How can I setup that visitors can place a starrating by an post? For example with 3 indicators; quality, price, reachability.

You can change the file uploads folder by reading the documentation for WordPress .. of which there is much in their “codex” … some core things for WordPress can be editied in the wp-config.php file — the theme (again) does *not* control where images are uploaded.

change to something like /images

If you do *ANYTHING* else with images, like sub-sub folders, or other folders — this would generally ONLY be for images you want to drop into things like an ad widget or manually place into a post.

For example you could put your ads into /blog/ads/ and all your ad file graphics there, which are then used when placing manual ads.

If you want images to be assigned to a “featured” image — you need to
a) make sure images are in the uploads folder, whatever you call it
b) use a plugin to make WP see those images

What I really want is to change the sidebar color site wide. If that’s not easily possible without having to set custom CSS for every module/block even for custom sidebars, etc. then I’ll leave it white.

I don’t know a lot about Joomla but it doesn’t matter much which is superior, matters which one lets you make something superior. There’s more than the car, there’s also the driver and that’s why you are here trying to learn how to drive wordpress. I’m not defending wordpress over joomla, I just don’t want to say that something is worst when in reality I don’t even know it that well.

About images and thumbnails, yes they can get messy. If you don’t want image resizing (thumb generation) just go to options and set the sizes of thumbnails to 0x0 (zero), voilá, no more image generation. This has the downside of making your visitors download the original images all the time, even if all they are seeing is a thumbnail of them. Making thumbnails will create an image of 2KB to show a 100×65 thumbnail but people are free to serve a 70KB 700×357 image that will be displayed 100×65 anyway, downsized only pixel-wise and not KB-wise.

One thing though: You’ll see 3 thumbnail sizes in WP options but that doesn’t mean that your WP makes only 3 thumb regens, if some plugin or theme registers a new size, that new size will be created and you won’t see it in the options. Woocommerce “installs” 3 thumb sizes regenerations for example, and bam! suddenly you have 10000+ images in your media folder because every upload will be multiplied 6 or more times!

In that regard, this theme could get a bit of optimization. This theme is very beautiful but has lots of blocks, sliders, galleries and what not. So this theme registers a boatload of thumb sizes regens to fit all those blocks. After a while I figured out which blocks and sliders I prefer to use and those I don’t and so I commented out all those thumb regens I don’t use. This should be done, if possible, before running a plugin like thumbnail regeneration or all thumb sizes registered will be regenerated.

PS: support is always answering questions at the forum (during work time ofc, shown top right) but you can try e-mail, they are quick to respond, I wasn’t even their client yet and they answered pretty quick.

Upon closer inspection it appears to be the ‘enqueueStyle’ function starting at line 540 in class-vc-base.php in plugins/js_composer/include/classes/core.

If I comment out the line ‘wp_enqueue_style( ‘js_composer_front’ );’ the error goes away.

I always feel like I’m giving back. On the old forum I used to haunt for our ecom system there was always this one guy providing all kinds of “dumbed down” info for us newbies and it was often the only way I could figure something out.

I guess I kind of took on that role ’round here for a bit. Sadly my time here will be coming to an end as it does from time to time where I ‘disappear’ for a month or two, but often I have time to “haunt” this forum as I’m often stuck doing things during the day where I have tiny little windows of nothing to do but wait … and I can only stomach so much on Facebook or checking out autoweek.com, etc. — so I circle back to here. And sometimes I see a question … and think .. HEY! I had same issue, I know what to do !

Since TagDiv has great support, I really do NOT need to do that 90& of the time (obviously!), but sometimes I do have a unique perspective having done this so freakin’ long now.

In any case, thanks for the kind words (how DO I get a ‘tip jar’ on here???) (kidding)

I was able to get the texts shown alright, but I felt that the following would have looked better (I’ll use English for clarity in the example — “Earlier” means earlier blog posts and “Later” means later blog posts):

However, the result was always that the “<” and “>” symbols ended up on a separate line, like this:

And that didn’t look good. Adjusting the font size in CSS didn’t help. I returned the original, untouched php files to the server for now. However, if you could help me have the above text + symbol combination work, that would most likely be the optimal solution. 🙂

Well, they kind of already have … on various threads.

Right now the *only* solution with Newsmag if you have this CPU spiral of doom is to use the shim plugin, and use VC as little as possible beyond the development portion of your home page. Make sure you have a lot of memory allocated to WordPress (at least 256MB from the wp-config.php file in addition to php.ini setting; you must do both!).

We started to see minor spikes once 4.4.2 came out. Prior to that zero issues. Right now we can use it, but anything later not so good. I can’t imagine if WP Bakery haven’t addressed this ins the 4.5x versions, that they still don’t “get it” and are not solving it — seems to be a “if 90% of people can use, the other 10% oh well …” which isn’t great.

Right now TagDiv is focused on (based on posts I’ve seen):
a) Newspaper 5 w/ features of Newsmag + better grid + new version of API.
b) Next Shim beta for use with Newsmag *and* Newspaper.
c) Newsmag 1.8 with bug fixes and minor updates/tweaks.
d) Dev work on possible alternative to using Visual Composer.

So — at the moment if your site dies with VC 4.42 immediately, then it’s clear you might need to go back one more iteration, and/or stick with 1.6 of Newsmag vs 1.71.

I have 2 sites still working with 1.6 and 4.42 without shim, and doing okay, but they are fairly low traffic sites. I have 3 sites on 1.71 with VC442 and the shim, and 2 of these are our larger main traffic sites which were killing MySQL in batches of every 10 minutes or so going from green to yellow to red, and back. Then CPU death.

Not sure any of that helps … not much TagDiv can do beyond the shim, and possibly providing earlier versions of VC to try for your system. Since they don’t develop VC, it’s not something they can “fix” for anybody beyond the reports they have provided to the Bakery folks as a developer/licensor in hopes of solution (and yet to see one).

Some theme devs are already leaving VC in favor of in house solutions or simpler things like Siteorigin builder (free/open source), etc. (( We’re using Page Builder by SiteOrigin with a lean WP home brew Bootstrap 3 theme for a client reporting system along with Advanced Custom Fields, and works well so far for that … )).

Anyway…. I’m sure TagDiv folk will have some reply, but likely not far different from the above rantings 🙂

Of course, it’s possible that the next version of Visual Composer will be better “optimized” …. frankly, I’m amazed they are not working with an example “DOA” server setup, reading the error logs, and trying to find what bit of code is causing the death spiral, and then FIXING it. But I’m behind on stuff for my own business, so can’t really point fingers on that 😉
