Thank you, Marius. I’m very pleased with how it came out. Even more so because the theme is faster than ever. You guys did a great job with the v6 update. Bravo.
But I haven’t fixed it, just found a temporary fix that doesn’t seem as obviously broken while we work on it. Here are the problems:
1. Categories Filter ** This was my bad. Didn’t correct the offset properly for the block after the ad while building the page.
Category filtering in blocks on the home page I’ve built is set as default, to show all categories, but it’s only showing the first category, alphabetically, from the site (Cowboys Blog). I’ve tried updating it several times and checking the other categories but no luck. All categories work fine when I select them individually, but not when selecting “All Categories” from the filter. This occurs with and without unique articles enabled, and after all caches have been cleared.
2. Newspaper Block Shortcodes in VC
Visual Composer is really not reading the themes blocks. See the screenshot for what I see:

That has remained constant on InsideTheStar.com (Main Site) while it was not a problem on Dev.InsideTheStar.com (Development Site, also live). It remains constant whether I use v6.1 parent or child theme, and whether I use VC v4.3.5 or v.4.5.3. I’ve checked upload type (binary vs. ascii) and uploaded fresh copies from the theme directory of the whole theme multiple times. I’ve also removed VC via both methods and reinstalled but no fix, yet.
I was able to create the homepage I’m using now by taking the page on my dev site, reverting to the classic editor so it would show me the VC shortcodes, and copied those shortcodes into the classic editor on the homepage for the main site. I couldn’t use the blocks any other way. With VC v.4.5.3 (as distributed with Newspaper v6.1) I couldn’t even edit those blocks at all on the main site, just move them around (couldn’t edit, duplicate, or delete them from the VC editor).
3. VC Editor Styles
I’m also seeing this issue while using Newspaper v6.1 with VC v4.3.5 (the only version I can access this following screen from):

I can still use the box with that broken style for the tabs up top, but it hints at the main problem, I’d think.
I would have liked to get it figured out already, but all I was able to do was get the site limping well enough that most visitors won’t notice (it’s a production site).
Any ideas? The only thing worth noting from the system info tab of the theme is that I’m running at 40mb instead of 64mb. It’s not the problem, though. Both the main site and dev site are running on the same host with the same setups, and the dev site is not experiencing any troubles with VC v.4.3.5.

Not having this problem over here.
Always good to
a) try using different web browser; make sure javascript not “disabled” in browser.
b) turn off all plugins except VC to see if plugin conflict
c) check your CDN is loading files properly if loading theme files from CDN
d) make sure you cleared your cache on CDN/server/plugin so you’re loading correct files
e) if you broke something in child theme; try using theme without child theme
We have issues from time to time with IE on Win7/64 in saving widgets; but works 100% in Chrome.
Hi
I am planning to update newspaper theme 4.6.3 to 6.1 version and i have some clarifications in it.
1. Will you please list me the files can be overrided by the child theme?
2. How can i disable google fonts completely and stop loading them via child theme?
Hi!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! We are working to make a “best of” section here on the forums.
I’ve added this suggestion on our issue tracker and if we find a way to implement it without affecting existing functionality we will implement it in the theme.
We are also investigating the issue with core theme files + child theme. It would be nice if the files could be overwritten by the child theme.
Hi,
Thanks @Bryson!
You can find the child theme in the /code folder – https://forum.tagdiv.com/whats-included/
Thanks!
Hi,
Sorry we have missed as we believed that it was solved: “nevermind i got them thank you for the support” also please create other thread as we put topics on resolved when users resolve their issues.
What version of Visual Composer do you use? You will have to revert to version provided with 4.6.3 version if this you are using. You can find it here – http://screencast.com/t/XMAUkWRZ7Ow and please delete current version of Visual Composer that you use via FTP and upload this version from /old folder.
Also for child theme please send an email at contact@tagdiv.com with you request and also paste a link to this topic so we can know who you are.
Thanks!
Just to clarify, was this an issue in Newspaper 4.6.1? That’s what we’re currently running (child theme). We were planning to update to Newspaper 6 and knowing that this would resolve the WooCommerce problem would make it a mandatory step now. Thanks for quick reply!
Having issues. Not my first rodeo with Newspaper. I did not upgrade from v4 of Newspaper to v6.1 – fresh database.
Uploaded Newspaper, Newspaper Child, activated Newspaper Child then VC and TD Social Counter – in that order. I’m getting the VC Menu link for its settings in the admin menu and when creating a page the builder does not show any Newspaper blocks at all. VC is showing me the demo homepage templates loaded into it by Newspaper, but when I use them, the blocks are not editable, only sortable.
Front-end of the site is loading fine. Even uses the blocks from the theme when I use a template to get it rolling, but I can’t edit the settings for it, obviously. Even tried installing and activating the API plugin to see if it would help, but no go.
This is for my main site. I’ve been testing for a few days on my development site, which is located at a subdomain of my main site, and everything has been working BEAUTIFULLY there with Newspaper 6. Really impressed with the improvements. Can’t figure out what’s making VC dumb at the moment.
What’s the malfunction?
Child them is in the Newspaper download folder. Look in the /Code directory for the child theme, read me, and api plugin.
Hi,
About hide different ad slots from different post types, is possible via code, using a php condition. You need to read the post template style and make a condition like here(if you are on template style 3 the ad will be displayed: http://screencast.com/t/iZMLs0j2O
Code: http://pastebin.com/L7tXuJcf
—————————-
About IF the article inline ad does show up, that the article bottom is hidden? I’m not sure i understand your question.
—————————-
Can the inline ad only be enabled on certain post templates?
Similar to header ad code, with a php condition to hide the ad.

About Social Counter: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-set-social-counter/

About child theme issue.. is solved in the latest theme version 6.1
Thanks for the message!
im trying to get back to the old newspaper theme but the child theme was not included in the files and im also receiving this message on my site
without object from outside a class in /home/content/00/10923500/html/3/wp-content/themes/Newspaper/includes/wp_booster/external/class-tgm-plugin-activation.php on line 1835
Warning: call_user_func() expects parameter 1 to be a valid callback, first array member is not a valid class name or object in /home/content/00/10923500/html/3/wp-content/themes/Newspaper/includes/wp_booster/external/class-tgm-plugin-activation.php on line 1835
could you provide me with the child theme as well as possibly a way to get this code fixed, its interfering with my sites woocommerce.
Changing themes does not delete your posts; think of a demo “style” as a child theme for the main theme. Just don’t install demo CONTENT; only install demo STYLES. Two different things. Demo “styles” are CSS. Demo content is temp content for webdev work.
You will need to regen your thumbnails after upgrade, just like any theme change.
And of course you should be making both a dbase backup on server of your content periodically; and doing an export of your CONTENT periodically, anyway.
🙂
Same. I try to use old child theme, but got error functions.php blah blah blah.
Please provide child theme for Newspaper 6.
Thank you
Hello everyone! 🙂
Our site is a german languaged magazine for parents and family. Our topics are helpful tipps and stuff involving babies and children. We really love the abilities this theme gives us. It’s the perfect combination of beeing able to write informative (good looking) texts and having the structure of an online magazine.
I must admit, that we are having a bit troubles with pagespeed. But this is because of my non-professional tech- knowledge. Within the next months we would like to invest a lot of time to get a forum online. The bbpress integration of the theme will hopefully help us with that! 😉
You can take a look into our site here: http://www.1-2-family.de
Warmest regards to everyone! 🙂

Alin [tagDiv].
I have tried to make an authors page using the authors block, been looking at this post for the solution -> https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/author-box-help/
It works fine when i insert this in the main themes td_block_author.php
$buffy .= '<div class="td-authors-description desc">';
$buffy .= '<p>' . get_the_author_meta( "description", $td_author->ID ) . '</p>';
$buffy .= '</div>';
But im trying to make it work from my child theme instead. I have added this to my child functions.php
function hook_td_global_after() {
td_api_block::update('td_block_authors',
array(
'map_in_visual_composer' => true,
"name" => 'Block Authors',
"base" => 'td_block_authors',
"class" => 'td_block_authors',
"controls" => "full",
"category" => 'Blocks',
'icon' => 'icon-pagebuilder-td_block_authors',
'file' => td_global::$get_template_directory . '/includes/shortcodes/td_block_authors.php',
"params" => array_merge(
td_wp_booster_config::get_map_block_general_array(),
td_wp_booster_config::get_map_filter_array(),
td_wp_booster_config::get_map_block_ajax_filter_array(),
td_wp_booster_config::get_map_block_pagination_array()
)
)
);
}
But it doesn’t work. Its probably me whos to tired to figure it out, but i dont get it. :/
Hi Radu,
how will the support for the old version work? Will there be reminders about updates? I let my programmer set up my site two month ago with child theme and many other features. I can’t change now to version 6, as it would destroy the whole site!
Yours
Mario
Hi,
I cannot see your screenshot We know about an issue with Big Grid, when child theme is used and it will be fixed in the next update. Please also check this solution, it may help – https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/big-grid-1-and-2-problems-on-newspaper-6-and-6-1/#post-55067
Thanks!
Hi,
You can disable gradient for each style that you want, just change the number in this custom css and paste it in Theme Panel > Custom Css: http://screencast.com/t/zCipetgRDm
.td-grid-style-1 .td-module-thumb a:last-child:before {
display: none !important;
}
Also please provide more details about assign color per panel, as I’m not sure what you mean.
Thanks!
Hi,
Child Theme is invalid display.
Child Theme is none padding-left

I have a simple question. Although I’m using a child theme, but some customizations require main theme’s files to be edited. So it’s obvious that any future update will overwrite all the changes so how can I deal with this problem? I want to make changes in main theme framework without any tension of losing all of them on next update!
Hi,
If you use child theme please switch to the main theme, clear cache and check if you still have this issue.
We know about this issue with child theme, please use main theme until we release an update to fix it(in few days a new version will be release with some fixes). Also you can try to use this solution in child theme and see if it works – https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/big-grid-1-and-2-problems-on-newspaper-6-and-6-1/#post-55607
Thanks!
Hi, I am wondering it is possible to use wordpress hooks (actions or filters) to programmatically set the Post Template for a specific category?
My intention is to make it harder for the editors of my site to ‘break’ the layout designs I want to keep consistent on the site.
Not sure if it is possible, but it would be great if through the functions.php in the child theme, you could set the $td_post_theme_settings[‘td_post_template’]; to a template of your own choosing.
Thanks in advance!
