- NewspaperHow to Update the Newspaper Theme
Hello,
The best way you can go about this is to access your files via FTP and manually install the theme. Delete the old one and upload the new version. You can follow this tutorial: https://forum.tagdiv.com/install-via-ftp/
Also make sure you clear your cache, remove any plugins and purge CDN files if you use it.
Let us know how it goes.
Thank you!
To reset plugin directory, via FTP:
a) rename plugins folder to xplugins
b) go to login
c) then go back to FTP and rename plugins folder back to plugins
this is the official WordPress method to reset plugins folder and what I use.
While there you might also fully DELETE the js-compposer folder for VC.
The envato plugin never works right for me.
Better to update manually via FTP to ensure all the files actually there. 🙂
Just read you last post awtown about child theme being updated but it does not need to be. It is the theme that needs the update, not the child theme. Child theme is the same every theme update. Consists of functions.php and the css file.
If you are using the child theme then do the ftp overwriting the old theme with newer version way. You don’t have to delete the theme at all just unzip the new folder package and unzip theme folder and make sure you just upload the unzipped folder of the name with all the files of theme right over the older one on your server. It will just overwrite what is on your server.
Really, it is that easy. You don’t even have to deactivate the child theme this way either.
I can also agree that updates were easy enough for me to do too. No complications at all. Not saying you are wrong the one that says used WordPress for like 15 years but updating the theme is not that hard. I even used both methods with dashboard and ftp and they work just fine either way. I did not even update the plugins from v2.2 to v2.3 and v2.3.1. Nothing gave me issues. Last two times updating. I just uploaded the folder of new version, overwriting the older via ftp and it works just fine as before, and I am not even using the child theme.
All my modifications are in the custom code section of themepanel. That does just as good as using a child theme to me. This is one of the best and simplest updates with this theme as possible and I had no hiccups yet with it.
I should not say no plugins were updated. Visual Composer was updated every time they gave a new update to the plugin with theme update. I don’t use Revolution Slider because that is one hard to use plugin for just a slider. Way too many options on it. So the only plugin I updated was Visual Composer and I kept the Social Counter the same and still was fine with no errors.

Hi,
Please address us via email and give wp and ftp access so we can have a closer look at this and also provide the necessary details to help us recreate this and we have a look as soon as possible and let you know of our findings. Please also include a link to this topic so we can know who you are.
Thanks!
Hi awtown,
We’re sorry for all the difficulties you face concerning this, like Andrei also stated we do our best to make the update process as well as theme’s administration and its configuration as simple as possible unfortunately due to some fixes would needed implemented the child theme has also been updated but to update it you will not need to overwrite all your modifications, it’s enough to just replace the code you now have in your child theme functions file: http://screencast.com/t/vOMJX9yIaxMv with the one from latest theme’s version: http://screencast.com/t/PydUD7zO3E and make sure you do this after you update the theme.
I’m not aware to which files you made customizations using the child theme but you also have to make sure your changes can still be applied to files now present on latest theme version that’s why you have to check each theme update change log and make sure that among the modified files there aren’t any of the files you have customized and if there are make sure your customizations can still be done to those files and update those files code and add it customizations. So in this process is recommended that you first backup your child theme and all modifications then check each file you’ve customized and if it’s ok add it in the same path in the child theme, if not make adapt the changes then add the file. In order to compare files you can also use winmerge according to this tutorial: https://forum.tagdiv.com/compare-theme-files-winmerge-tutorial/
All themes update logs and modified files can be found on theme’s product page on themeforest: http://themeforest.net/item/newsmag-news-magazine-newspaper/9512331 ( down the page ) and/or on theme’s blog: http://tagdiv.com/blog/ – starring with 2.2 update each update has an specific article which contains all informations about the update.
If you still can’t manage this and you need additional assistance or informations, please fell free to ask and address us via email at contact@tagdiv.com and also provide a link to this conversation and give us ftp and wp access.
Again! We’re sorry for the inconvenience!
Thanks!

Wow. Must have a great time machine, considering WordPress launched in 2003. You are a grand master of the universe. Based on the ‘How do I install a plugin’ question, I didn’t peg you as an expert as that is a newbie type query. Most folks look into the download folders, know how to FTP, etc.
Child themes are “normally” meant to allow basic mods without touching parent, except when major changes are made to WP core which has happened a lot this year, or if there is major theme upgrade to bring entirely new feature set at which point the child theme also needs to be upgraded.
Most of us using WP the past decade are aware of this.
Not trying to argue about it, but of course lots of themes to choose from. I love this one and we use it for our news network and have no troubles, but then we edit the main theme and never use child themes as they are a redirect of the CSS and you are eventually going to run into the issues you are now.
I’ve used dozens of themes and the child themes often change to address changes to WooCommerce, WP core, security patches, etc. And WordPress 4.4 next month brings additional changes to core.
In any case, I don’t work here — so sorry I posted anything here — didn’t intend to upset you.
It’s all good. Peace! 🙂

Wordpress how to install plugins:
https://codex.wordpress.org/Managing_Plugins
Manual Plugin Installation
There are a few cases when manually installing a WordPress Plugin is appropriate.
◾ If you wish to control the placement and process of installing a WordPress Plugin.
◾ If your server does not permit automatic installation of a WordPress Plugin.
◾ The WordPress Plugin is not in the WordPress Plugins Directory.
Installation of a WordPress Plugin manually requires FTP familiarity and the awareness that you may put your site at risk if you install a WordPress Plugin incompatible with the current version or from an unreliable source.
Backup your site completely before proceeding.
To install a WordPress Plugin manually:
1. Download your WordPress Plugin to your desktop.
2. If downloaded as a zip archive, extract the Plugin folder to your desktop.
3. Read through the “readme” file thoroughly to ensure you follow the installation instructions.
4. With your FTP program, upload the Plugin folder to the wp-content/plugins folder in your WordPress directory online.
5. Go to Plugins screen and find the newly uploaded Plugin in the list.
6. Click Activate to activate it.
Hello Bogdan,
There is no CDN or cache on our development system (which is the staging setup).
De-activating plugins didn’t help either.
I’ve sent you an email with login details and SFTP details. I’ve reset the development back to 4.6.1 as I’m sure that is more useful to you.
Kind Regards.
Hi
Please make sure that you installed/updated the theme according with our documentation: https://forum.tagdiv.com/newsmag-install-via-ftp/ – https://forum.tagdiv.com/newsmag-how-to-update-the-theme/
Also check in browser’s console if there are some errors, deactivate all plugins except Visual Composer, clear all caches, deactivate the child theme if you’re using and test again.
Let me know how it goes.
Thanks!
Hi,
Yes, should be no issues if you already use version 6 of the theme. There were not so many changes like from version 4 to 6, when the entire theme’s code was changed, so in your case should not be any issues. First please make a full backup(current installation and database), just to be sure that you can revert in case something goes wrong. Please note that you have to update also the plugins that come with the theme, there is no automatic update for them.
If you have issues with automatic update, please try to do this via FTP – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/
Thanks!

Hi,
Please be advised that the child theme will not work anymore. Version 6 of the theme is a new theme built from scratch. the code has been changed and so the child theme will not work properly. You will have to remake your child theme and adjust it’s modifications to the new code.
Installing via FTP is the best way to do it.
Simply copy the theme and then install the plugins from this panel: http://screencast.com/t/DJmsB29SMj
Thanks.
Updated the plugins manually by ftp and it didn’t seem to work. Do you think reverting to my backup and then starting over would help. Last time I activated the child theme and then installed the new theme using the normal WordPress theme panel.
I’m thinking:
Revert to backup
Activate child theme
Manually load theme through ftp
Sound right?
Hello,
The social counter needs to be updated as well, and visual composer also. Please install the plugin versions bundled with the theme version: http://screencast.com/t/aqcRBkTNB
As for the second problem, please follow Chris’ suggestion (thank you Chris) and do an install via FTP: https://forum.tagdiv.com/install-via-ftp/ and let us know if the problem is still there afterwards.
Thanks.
You can update the social counter from the file included with your theme download, in the plugins folder. Always best to do those manually via FTP.
Similarly always best to update theme via FTP as sometimes auto-update tools can timeout leaving elements incomplete.
Hi
I’ve checked your site and noticed that the theme’s fonts are not found: http://screencast.com/t/5ODOSFNbtU Please make sure that you updated the theme properly, you can check in our documentation which are the right steps for this process: https://forum.tagdiv.com/newsmag-how-to-update-the-theme/ so you can try to re upload the theme via ftp, then test again.
Let me know how it goes.
Thanks!
Hi,
Please send an email at contact@tagdiv.com , include a link to this conversation and provide wp-admin and ftp access so we can take a look.
Thank you!
Hello,
Unfortunately the theme has no option to delete unused thumbs. You can chose which thumb will be generated by the theme here: http://screencast.com/t/bj4h3mW9cgBw, but this does not delete already generated ones. There are 2 ways you can do this. After you select which thumbs you need from the theme panel, either access your files via ftp and manually delete unused thumbs (or all of them and regenerate again), or you can try to use the force regenerate plugin which will also delete the existing thumbs before replacing them with the new ones.
Let us know how it goes
Thank you!
Hello,
You can try to do a fresh install of the theme via ftp. Your articles will not be lost because they are stored in the database. Delete your current theme folder and add the new one. https://forum.tagdiv.com/install-via-ftp/
Make sure you do a back-up first.
(the error comes from the update script used to update from version 4 to version 6. You do not need this script if you already have version 6)
Let us know how it goes!
Thank you!
Hi alin
Currently i have used old version of CSS file that comes with Newspaper theme 4.6.3. But modified CSS file based on latest newspaper theme 6.5.1 not working any more and i have renamed it as old_style.css and located here http://www.wpdiv.ml/wp-content/themes/WPDIV/old_style.css
I still need your help to troubleshoot this issue. Can i send you the FTP and WordPress credentials to troubleshoot the issue?
Expecting your support
With regards

Hello there!
We are trying to paste an ad code on the header section.
“In your WordPress admin dashboard, navigate to the “Appearance” option, and then to the “Editor”. Open the file header.php for editing. Paste your PopMarker embed code directly above the closing head tag (</head>).”
When I access the header via FTP or even the editor I get this.
https://www.evernote.com/l/AQRqdIqEBZdM8r5NMBvffln7KZdAFdSd1LQ
Where can I get the actual header?
Already tried disabling all plugins, twice. both form the editor, and ftp changing name of plugins folder.
Theme updated.
Visual composer updated to 4,7
Not working
you might try renaming your plugins folder to force off all plugins; then login, then switch to default theme; then fresh update via FTP; switch plugin folder back to normal name, then turn back on Visual Composer, check all works.
And of course clear/disable your caching before doing anything like this.

Is it normal that the theme multiplies images itself? In ftp I see in uploads folder (2015/11) of every image multiple versions in different sizes, well according to filename. Maybe because of responsiveness? Let me know because i had an malware attack and i have to monitor everything close now..
