Hi VAtheist,
Newspaper 6 is practically a new theme, the whole code was rewritten so you have do a clean update and make sure that no old files remain. Please follow the guide suggested by Chris. Make full backup of your current installation – https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups and then do a clean update, meaning that we recommend that you delete the old version of the theme before uploading the new one. The recommended method is via FTP. Then update also the theme plugins: Visual Composer (also optional plugins Social Counter, Speed Booster if you use them).
Please note that the old custom modifications to the files or custom css will not work, you will have to adjust and re-add them. Also the shortcodes have been changed.
Thanks!
Hi,
Thanks Chris!
@robfrancisco Please try to upload it via FTP like Christopher suggested and let me know how it goes!
Thanks!
Hi
you can follow these directions:
https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/
note you need to DELETE the old theme folder before uploading the new one. When you update themes and plugins you don’t “over write” the old one, you delete old one, and upload the NEW version. Best way is via FTP.
Be sure you have backups of all your files, dbase, etc., so you can “go back” if necessary.
Hope that was slightly helpful.
Try unzipping on your PC, and upload the folder directly via FTP to the /wp-content/plugins/ folder.
Hi,
Please make sure you have installed the theme properly, if you can re-install it via FTP(make sure you use the latest version 6.5) – https://forum.tagdiv.com/install-via-ftp/ maybe it was an error when you install it. I did not managed to replicate this on my side.
Do you get this issue only for widgets or also when you add blocks using Visual Composer?
If the issue persist please send an email at contact@tagdiv.com and provide wp-admin access so we can take a look, also paste a link to this topic so we can know who you are and what your issue is.
Thanks!
Hi
As Chris suggested above make sure that you delete the js_composer folder from /wp-content/plugins deactivate all plugins then try to re-install the plugin from Newsmag-tf.zip\Newsmag-tf\plugins path according to our documentation: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-visual-composer-plugin-wpbakery/
If the problem persist please send an email at contact@tagdiv.com and provide wp-admin and ftp access so we can take a look, also paste a link to this topic.
Thanks!
You don’t upload the straight download from Envato. You need to extract the zip folder then upload the Newsmag zip. You are getting that error for uploading all of the whole documents and everything in the download not just the theme. You just need to install the theme only zip. So you unzip or winrar or 7zip to extract the download file and then upload the theme.
If you are doing this through the dashboard via theme upload, then above is the way.
If you are doing it via ftp then you unzip the download and then unzip the theme and then upload via ftp unzipped theme folder in the wp-content/themes/theme_folder here unzipped. After that then go to dashboard and activate it.

Hi,
I had a similar problem like it is discussed her: https://forum.tagdiv.com/topic/glitch-with-social-counter-plugin/ (Just for me it was the facebook and not the instagram counter). So I followed the steps recommended in that thread.
Just after re-installing the social-counter-plugin nothing worked anymore (complete white sreen in frontend and backend). The plugin does not even have to be activated, just being installed causes this problem. I did not change, installed or deinstalled any other plugins.
I deleted the social-counter-plugin folder then via ftp, so that frontend and backend are working normal again. Just I still would like to use the social counter – do you have any ideas?
Best to unzip on your hard drive then FTP to the plugins folder manually; that’s what I do to ensure it always works.
Hello there,
I have trouble installing the essential Visual Composer plug-in. I have the theme installed via wordpress zip upload and accessed the newsmag tab->plugins to install but it does not work. I have also installed via FTP for both theme and js.composer plugin. Yet, the same error kept appearing as follows:
The plugin does not have a valid header.
Downloading install package from http://www.gamification.co/wp-content/themes/Newsmag/includes/plugins/js_composer.zip…
Unpacking the package…
Installing the plugin…
Destination folder already exists. /htdocs/wp-content/plugins/js_composer/
Plugin install failed.
I referred to other threads with the same issue. Should I send an email to contact@tagdiv.com and provide wp-admin and ftp access so you guys can take a look? Your help would be most appreciated.
The forget password link from the WP log in directs to woocommerce’s “my account” but when an email or user name is put in, no one gets an email to reset the password.
But the home.com/?action=lostpassword is working. So I want to redirect form the WP’s logging “forgot password” to the ?action=lostpassword link. I’ve tried changing from woocommerce plugin from “lost-password” to ?action=lostpassword it does not work. I’ve tried chaning from FTP files woocommerce >login.php
I tried adding in
function change_lost_password_link( $LostPassURL){ $LostPassURL = home_url(‘/?action=lostpassword’); return $LostPassURL; } add_filter(‘wppb_pre_login_url_filter’,’change_lost_password_link’, 2);
In the function.pho based on an internet search. It worked once then it stopped working.
Hello,
Please make sure you install all plugins that come with the theme. Your problem on the main page comes from the social counter plugin.
Please check that you did all installation steps shown in our documentation: https://forum.tagdiv.com/install-via-ftp/
Thank you!
Hi,
I know that you already use version 6 of the theme so you can update using this guide(via FTP – video tutorial or WordPress) – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/
Thanks!
Hello,
Lukas or André or somebody, where is the file in ftp to edit? what´s their name and extension?or in the theme, where i put this code?
thanks!
Hi,
Thanks Chris!
@robert4web The Visual Composer plugin is not updated by Envato toolkit. You can deactivate and delete the old version of Visual Composer – http://screencast.com/t/oboeavsin and install it from here – http://screencast.com/t/NeIrAMKdm3
Also you can update it using this guide – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-visual-composer-plugin/ or via FTP.
Thanks!
Hi,
@RWBest Do you get an error when you try to install the Visual Composer? It can be easily installed from here – http://screencast.com/t/lD8uuk1Z Please provide more details if you get any error.
If you still have issues please send an email at contact@tagdiv.com and provide wp-admin and ftp access so we can take a look, also paste a link to this topic so we can know who you are and what your issue is.
Thanks!
Hi,
You can update via FTP, there is a video tutorial in the documentation – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ There should not be any problems with child theme customizations as we did not change html, just added fixes and new features as you can check the update_log file.
Thanks!
Generally yes. See the theme docs on how to do updates, as a good starting point.
Since it’s a bundled plugin and not a separate license, you cannot “update” it from the publisher of the plugin or via the WordPress repository as a commercial plugin.
I generally don’t use the Envato toolkit myself as it sometimes breaks things.
FTP is really important to learn to use for WP, as it’s often the only way to do proper backups, edit files, edit htaccess, set permissions, etc.
See the update instructions in the theme docs, right side of page.
ThemeForest themes are not part of the WordPress repository, so they generally need to be updated manually, typically via FTP is best way.
Also some great tutorials online for how to update WordPress themes.
(I do not work here …)

Hello!
I updated Newspaper via Envato Toolkit plugin – Now is Newspaper 6.5, but … Visual Composer is not updated to 4.7.1.1 and is still 4.6.2 version and in my WordPress administration I can’t find out any message about new version of Visual Composer.
Is Visual Composer possible to update only via FTP not via WordPress administration?
Thanks,
Best regards
Basically, just change it.
Be sure the theme is not active; rename theme folder (generally you would do this on your PC/Mac prior to upload via FTP).
For example we change the name of our folder to our news network name.
Just change it from /Newspaper/ to something like /StyleBaron/ or whatever you website name happens to be — be careful NOT to name it the same as a category, post, plugin name, or WordPress function, just to be safe — like, don’t name it VisualComposer for example, or JetPack if you’re using jetpack, is tempting fate! hypehen and underlines can be used, like my-cool-mag … although I’d likely limit to 2 words, no reason you can’t do more.
If using a child theme you likely might need to check the style.css to make sure it points to the right place. I don’t use child themes, so if you don’t then it won’t apply to you either.
There is also an awesome resource called Google for many things like this — WP has been around over 10 years, so this is a very common question you can often answer yourself vs waiting for a reply here — not that anything wrong with that, or looking for pointers here from others who have already done the deed. 🙂
(pardon typos; this keyboard starting to die as is my brain …)

Hi,
Yes, you are right the users have the final decision, we try to improve our themes and we consider the users suggestions for this.
Please try to update your theme via FTP, there is also a video tutorial for this – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/
Thanks!
Hello t-user,
You can try to upload the plugin via ftp. You can find it in the /plugins folder from files that you download from themeforest – http://screencast.com/t/9vFPNCUhK0
connect to your server, go to the /plugins folder, unzip the Visual Composer upload it – http://screencast.com/t/kD3YPsT9nj
It is similar procedure to updating the theme via ftp, but instead just upload the Visual Composer in the plugins folder – https://forum.tagdiv.com/install-via-ftp/
Let me know how it goes.
Thank you!
Hi,
Do you use the latest theme version and Visual Composer? I have also checked this but I could not find any issues – http://screencast.com/t/Nak6Awmmex0K – http://screencast.com/t/WnkGrWc8
Please use the instructions from the guide below to update the theme and the FTP method to do it and also make sure that you make a backup of your current theme installation so you can revert back to it in case something goes wrong.
Newspaper update guide: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/
Thanks!
Hello,
Our advice, as Chris stated, is to manually replace WordPress files via FTP. You can read about it in this guide
: https://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress
Make sure you back-up your files before attempting to replace them.
I Hope you get it fixed. Let us know.
Thank you
