First, to set a page as your homepage, do this:

1. Create a page and call it “Home” or something.

2. Go to WordPress’s “Reading” settings and set it to use a static page. Then you can choose the page you made.

Then you can customize your homepage by editing that page you made.

If you edit it and see the normal WordPress editing screen, click the blue “Backend Editor” button, which will take you to Visual Composer’s editing view.

From there, you will see the rows and columns that make up your homepage. If you want, set the homepage template at the right, from one of tagDiv’s basic ones. Then you can click on the + icons to add an element. For example, a slider, a Big Slider, a Revolution Slider at the top.

Then the main part of your homepage is usually made up of block elements. The demo homepage is made of blocks set to show their categories. When you edit a block’s settings, that’s when you would make them show your categories — and many other options.

It’s in the “all files” download from your theme forest account for the newspaper theme; when you uncompress the newspaper-tf folder, you will see sub-folder “plugins.” 🙂

I normally uncompress locally on my hard drive, then FTP up manually to replace old content.

You might try downloading files again. Also don’t use FTP tool to unzip as I have had nothing but problems there, same goes for unzipping on the server.

I was able to decompress the file with no issue using WinRAR on my local PC, so file is good.

I’m wondering the same thing as well,because the last update i’ve not touch because there was no VC update as promise…

@TheMediumUTM – You can use the CSS :nth-child() selector rather than nesting elements in rows. It won’t break the layout, but accurately targeting the element sometimes takes a few tries. I often have to fix the object hierarchy, and also add a property that makes it easy to visually identify so that you know you’ve got the right one, something like:

div.some_known_class > div > div:nth-child(2) { background-color: red; }

Thanks. Yes, I’ve split the row into two columns with the Visual Composer. The problem is, when I use “Block 2” in the two-column space, the top teaser does not span both columns, only one.

Basically, I’m getting this

Yup, you don’t. We get a version bundled with the theme, and tagDiv includes the latest one with each new theme update.

Some people are so annoyed by the update counter that they buy a VC licence just to keep it up to date (I considered it…). But some people have reported problems with that, because tagDiv tests each new version’s compatibility before including it in a theme update. So it’s safest just to not update it.

I want, when access some categories, that website show some different layout. So i will make some page (use visual composer), with a page define for a category.

How to custome? If you have tutorial for problem, please send me.

P.S. Oh, good point, I forgot that if you create a page template it can survive theme updates because it won’t be overwritten 🙂

It would be great to have white background on:

(1) The page or category you’re on (Home, News, etc.)

(2) The category of the post or the you’re on (e.g. News for a news article)

(3) Parent category (e.g. Opinion when on Letter to the Editor: http://building.mediumutm.ca/opinion/letter-to-the-editor/ )

I can give up (3). (The original CSS from Lucian included it and the latest one doesn’t, but it doesn’t matter much to me either way.)

The only problem is that both groups of CSS also have this highlighting:

(4) The child categories of the parent category you’re on (e.g. all the dropdown items when on Opinion: http://building.mediumutm.ca/opinion/)

When this happens, hovering over the items in the dropdown has no visual response because they’re all selected, even though you’re only on the parent.

Is it possible to have the parent without the children?

I am using visual composer to build my home page. I want a different looks. I want to use a few different blocks with the classic look on the same page. Is that possible?

There wasn’t h1 tag on blog page at all, but thanks to Emil, I have added h1 and h2 tags to my homepage by editing the index.php file. I would like to build homepage with visual composer, and tried a few times. However, I could not build a beautiful homepage. That’s why I use blog template.

Well, the sidebar is easy to remove under “page template settings” on the editing screen.

As for the header and footer, there are a few ways you could do this. Here are two:

1. You could edit the respective template files in a child theme to check the page id and only include the relevant elements if it’s not your thank you page.

For example, once you set up and activate a child theme, you could edit the header file you’ve selected in your theme panel. Find this in your-child-theme/parts/header… .php, and add this line before the first div:

and this at the very end:

<?php } ?>

Then you would do the same to other files you want to remove (menu-top.php, footer.php), save, upload, and clear cache.

2. If you’re not comfortable with child themes or php, you could instead do it quickly through CSS:

.page-id-4994 .td-header-bg {
  display: none !important;
  }

And add any container classes that you want to hide, putting them where .td-header-bg is, e.g. .td-header-menu-wrap. You can find these using inspect element.

The CSS solution isn’t great because all the content will still be downloaded by the client’s browser, but it’s very easy.

3. Create a custom page template. WordPress checks for page templates in a hierarchy of importance, including the slug and the ID, so if you your page’s slug is /email-landing and you have a template named page-email-landing.php, or page-4994.php, and so on, WordPress will use that rather than the default one. Then you could edit that one to suit your needs. You could copy page.php from the parent theme’s folder as a starting point.

From what I’ve read, this is probably the most natural solution, but it would still need a child theme to survive theme updates, and to be honest I haven’t looked at enough custom template building yet to know what to advise you. For example, you can’t just remove the call to get_header() from page.php or you’ll lose a lot more than the logo div, etc.

Those are my two cents, coming from a relatively new learner of this sort of thing. If anyone has a better solution, feel free to mention it so I can learn too. 🙂
