The 500 error is usually a server side error meaning that there is something wrong but the server couldn’t provide more information about the problem. It is an general error usually caused by configuration issues with the websites programming, PHP or system permissions.

If you still can’t manage to solve this issue please provide the error log via http://pastebin.com/ so I can tack a closer look at this issue.

We had an issue with the category page since the new update of WordPress has been released. This issue was fixed in the latest theme update available on themforest, V 6.6.2 so try to update the theme at the current version: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ clear all caches and test again.

I am not sure why this happens but you can try to deactivate all plugins except Visual Composer, just to make sure there is no conflict between some plugins, clear all caches and test again.

Please backup the whole current theme installation as well as the database and wp install: https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups in case something goes wrong you can get back at the old install.
Make sure you do a clean update, meaning that we recommend that you delete the old version of the theme before uploading the new one – https://forum.tagdiv.com/newsmag-how-to-update-the-theme/ update also the plugins that come with the theme files from the /plugins folder. If you’re using child theme deactivate it during the update process, switch to default wp theme.
If you use child theme for files customizations it’s a good practice to check update_log.txt file for each update and see what files had been modified so if those specific files are used in the child theme you will have to check your customizations to not break the functionality of the theme.

The shim plugin was designed to work with the older versions of the theme. We didn’t test the plugin with the latest versions of the theme and I can’t say for sure if will work fine. We will try to do some tests using Shim version of the Visual Composer in the next weeks to check its behavior with the latest theme version.

Using the default sidebar options from page settings will affect only the latest article part: http://screencast.com/t/hyQbkDdCINTz not the one built with Visual Composer page-builder. To add the sidebar here: http://screencast.com/t/XahYbpuDd you have to use a widgetized sidebar block from visual composer like here: http://screencast.com/t/YbNfZtxNu Also make sure that you empty all caches then test the site again.

We didn’t do any test with the indicated plugins and I am not aware of theirs functionality. I can’t say how they will work with the theme due the fact they weren’t been tested, but as Chris suggested you can try them and use the one which fits you best.

Newspaper 6 is a whole new theme so an update from 4 to 6 may cause the same issues as switching to another theme (but we did try to maintain compatibility where ever possible).
Always make a full backup of your current installation – https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups and then do a clean update, meaning that we recommend that you delete the old version of the theme before uploading the new one – https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-the-theme-2/ update also the plugins that come with the theme files from the /plugins folder. In the “how to update” guide is specified that you will have to run the script that will import from database your settings.
The shortcodes have been changed so old ones will not work anymore. Please note that old files customization or custom css will not work with the new version and you will have to adjust or re-add them.
Bottom line is that newspaper 6 is a whole new theme built from scratch.
