I see the forum is converting my html code – here’s black star – ★ and here’s – white star ☆
Thanks – I am sending the links and credentials this afternoon.
Many thanks, Anamaria. I’ll try this.
Thanks – yes, that’s how I see it. It’s changed recently, guess due to WP, not NP interface with NP?
As I say, used to be larger font and field and more easily scrolled, as I recall.
Ok, thanks. Gutenberg has quite a few flaws, so not surprised to hear. I’ll check these things.
Hello Vlad – I mean this:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jvu_b7HyXWTkdnNVWYTBMDSoA7LD_GlV/view?usp=sharing
The only way I seem to be able to remove it is to change to code editor and then change back to visual – which is laborious. Shouldn’t there be a simple to return to editing the text?
Thanks
Mark
Further to this I see that hitting Quote no longer generates the same code:
<!– wp:quote {“quoteStyle”:”td_quote_box td_box_left”} –>
<p>’…if there’s anything that I think differentiates my band than other bands is just the sheer amount of joy'</p>
<!– /wp:quote –>
Now it’s:
<!– wp:quote {“className”:”is-style-default”} –>
<p></p><cite>’…if there’s anything that I think differentiates my band than other bands is just the sheer amount of joy'</cite>
<!– /wp:quote –>
Me too – Yoast deactivated solves the problem.
I took up Yoast because, I think, Google Ads recommend it.
There’s an incompatibility then between NP and one of the most required plugins on the web?
Ah now I see it – perhaps you forgot to say you have to have Custom Fields selected in Options. Then side panels can be moved to bottom of the post. Solved!
For me the up arrow is greyed out and does not return Post Settings to the bottom of the post. See here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zUfFRP1m8bFMyrhOoBwmIbisxSgyzvX2/view?usp=sharing
The only thing the arrows do is move Post Settings (or any other field) up and down in the side panel. They don’t move anything out of the side panel.
I hope there’s a fix of this. Work with 5.5 just gets harder and harder…
Thanks
MG
Here’s what I’m seeing: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aB4b2OyAl-83NSYjIQrxo9eFJHU2Uhrk/view?usp=sharing
Leaky Paywall parameters have also moved back there after moving to below the post for a while.
Now I find that Post Settings in WordPress are appearing at the bottom of the right-hand column, visible but the column is too narrow, making text entry very difficult and many fields obscured. Very inconvenient. Why has it moved from beneath the post? WP 5.5.1 for me gets worse and worse. I haven’t had time to create subdomain yet. I just need software that works. A year ago NP and WP worked fine.
Hi Calin – thanks. Unfortunately I don’t know how to create subdomain or staging.
Thanks, Calin – I updated to 5.5.1 the day it launched. As I say, these problems for me go back a long time, perhaps a year or so. Any other ideas?
In the short term, before WordPress might fix or ditch this misconceived update:
1) does anyone else find that WordPress no longer saves Most Used blocks list beyond one post and has anyone found a fix, and
2) does anyone else find that despite putting the cursor before first word of a post, Most Used blocks places any Reusable block selected at the top of the second paragraph?
Thanks
MG
By the way – please put forward the idea of creating a chargeable tagDiv paywall plugin – I’m sure there’d be demand.
See what leading newspapers such as the Times London, Daily Telegraph, New York Times etc are using.
I think the Newspaper theme badly needs this option.
Ok, Vlad, thanks.
What would be useful is if you could tell me how to get 2 values
.td-post-content
.tdb_single_content
into the field Alternative Restrictive Handling field shown at 2. in https://zeen101.helpscoutdocs.com/article/72-caching-with-leaky-paywall-i-e-wp-engine
Some sort of code to separate and make both values recognised? Then the paywall would recognise the 2 principle content containers I am using.
Thanks
MG
Ok, both https://jazzjournal.co.uk/2020/06/22/dinah-washington-four-classic-albums/ and https://jazzjournal.co.uk/2020/08/17/count-me-in-08-20/ are now showing paywall message ok, although I cannot get the required number of HTML elements to show before the message. I realise you don’t support 3rd plugins but any help in figuring this out is welcome.
https://zeen101.helpscoutdocs.com/article/72-caching-with-leaky-paywall-i-e-wp-engine
One problem is that Leaky Paywall only seems to give the option for one content container but I am using at least 2.
Thanks
MG
I should say it worked for a while with tdb_single_content but then stopped appearing without me making any changes. On this post the paywall message is currently appearing – https://jazzjournal.co.uk/2020/08/17/count-me-in-08-20/. But for how long? It seems erratic and inconsistent.
The best solution is Newspaper creates an integrated paywall plugin. It’s an obvious addition to a theme whose main sellable product is content. I’m sure many would pay an extra premium for such a plugin. Has it ever been considered?
The plugin in question is Leaky Paywall. Where it asks in its settings for “CSS selector of the container that contains the content on a post and custom post type” I insert from this post https://jazzjournal.co.uk/2020/06/22/dinah-washington-four-classic-albums/
tdb_single_content
The plugin should insert a paywall message after this point. But it doesn’t appear.
If I reset same post using Style 1 standard post template, and insert
.td-post-content
the paywall message appears ok.
Can you see what the problem is with the cloud template post? It seems I can’t use a paywall plugin with any Newspaper cloud template.
Thanks
MG
Another thing – when you put your cursor at the front of paragraph one, then select a block from the library it deposits it at the beginning of paragraph two. More work, moving it to top of p1…
Just for the record, I see no improvements in WP 5.5.1.
1) Still can’t have both Settings and Blocks Library open at the same time (using MacBook Pro 15″)
2) Paragraph still doesn’t automatically recognise pasted HTML code. Elaborate steps are needed to achieve what used to take one pasting keystroke.
3) Default block colours remain changed, arbitrarily.
4) Still only previews in desktop mode, though it shows tablet and mobile views in editor, which is pointless. And of course takes 3 clicks (open dropdown, select open in new tab, click elsewhere to close dropdown). Can’t they at least make dropdown close automatically?
5) No change
6a) No change, doesn’t preserve Most Used Blocks outside current edit
6b) Ok, though can’t see point of design change.
Still, overall with 5.5 WP have created a lot more work for users. Not Newspaper’s problem, of course! Unless there are compatibility issues.
Thanks
MG
Thanks, Simion – I see my WP has updated to 5.5.1. I look forward to seeing fixes.
I won’t know if any issues are only with NP as NP is the only theme I use…
Regards
Mark Gilbert
Belatedly – thanks, Vlad!
