Thanks, Calin
1) – for me, I cannot have both Blocks Library and Settings open at the same time. I am on a MacBook, but I think the same applied on my iMac
2) Yes – so one has to work harder, more clicks. Before, I could paste code into a block and the html is immediately recognised – WordPress have created more work for editors.
3) I am referring to WordPress wp-admin/post.php. Under Settings/Block/Colour settings, WordPress have arbitrarily changed the default colours. I used to select a light grey background, around #ededed. WP has changed this to dark grey, perhaps never considering that some users might be using the previous light grey. Consequently I have now to select custom colour and enter #ededed – more keystrokes for the editor
4) Mobile and tablet show reduced column size in the editor but if you select mobile or tablet then hit Preview, you always get a desktop preview, not mobile or tablet.
5) Yes, a retrograde step by WP – makes more work for the editor.
6a) It doesn’t work for me except within a single post. It won’t retain Most Used when I begin a new post. WP used to retain Most Used for new posts. But that stopped working for me long before 5.5, in an earlier version.
6b) Ok, thanks – I didn’t know WP had moved them.
Overall, I find 5.5, so far, to be worse than the previous but perhaps this will be resolved in an update.
But please do check none of these problems result from incompatibility between Newspaper and WP 5.5…
Mark
Great! That’s exactly what I want – thanks, Calin!
Can you help with my second question of Jul 21, 2020 at 4:10 pm? See above. I want to get this code from Amazon to work in the same way, floating left or right within the article:
<script type=”text/javascript”>amzn_assoc_ad_type =”responsive_search_widget”; amzn_assoc_tracking_id =”jazzjournal01-21″; amzn_assoc_marketplace =”amazon”; amzn_assoc_region =”GB”; amzn_assoc_placement =””; amzn_assoc_search_type = “search_widget”;amzn_assoc_width =”auto”; amzn_assoc_height =”auto”; amzn_assoc_default_search_category =””; amzn_assoc_default_search_key =”Monika Herzig”;amzn_assoc_theme =”light”; amzn_assoc_bg_color =”FFFFFF”; </script><script src=”//z-eu.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&Operation=GetScript&ID=OneJS&WS=1&Marketplace=GB”></script>
I tried this, but nothing shows:
<div style=” float: left; margin-right: 16px “><script type=”text/javascript”>amzn_assoc_ad_type =”responsive_search_widget”; amzn_assoc_tracking_id =”jazzjournal01-21″; amzn_assoc_marketplace =”amazon”; amzn_assoc_region =”GB”; amzn_assoc_placement =””; amzn_assoc_search_type = “search_widget”;amzn_assoc_width =”auto”; amzn_assoc_height =”auto”; amzn_assoc_default_search_category =””; amzn_assoc_default_search_key =”Monika Herzig”;amzn_assoc_theme =”light”; amzn_assoc_bg_color =”FFFFFF”; </script><script src=”//z-eu.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&Operation=GetScript&ID=OneJS&WS=1&Marketplace=GB”></script></div>
Thanks!
Hello Vlad – thanks, I already know that – of course I have been using HTML. Could you please read my two posts above:
1) Jul 20, 2020 at 11:35 am
2) Jul 21, 2020 at 4:10 pm
to see what my questions are?
Thanks
Mark
Dear Vlad
You’ve just given me the same answer as you did before, at Jul 21, 2020 at 10:29 am.
Please see my responses from Jul 21, 2020 at 1:21 pm onwards, and let me know if you or anyone else in support can help me.
Thanks
Mark
Can someone answer the 2 questions above?
1) Jul 21, 2020 at 1:21 pm
2) Jul 21, 2020 at 4:10 pm
Thanks
I added the <div> marks. Amazon’s script comes without.
Another related question – can I get this code to work in the middle of a post using Custom HTML or other WP block?
<div style=”width:320px”><script type=”text/javascript”>amzn_assoc_ad_type =”responsive_search_widget”; amzn_assoc_tracking_id =”jazzjournal01-21″; amzn_assoc_marketplace =”amazon”; amzn_assoc_region =”GB”; amzn_assoc_placement =””; amzn_assoc_search_type = “search_widget”;amzn_assoc_width =”auto”; amzn_assoc_height =”auto”; amzn_assoc_default_search_category =””; amzn_assoc_default_search_key =”Andrew McCormack”;amzn_assoc_theme =”light”; amzn_assoc_bg_color =”FFFFFF”; </script><script src=”//z-eu.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&Operation=GetScript&ID=OneJS&WS=1&Marketplace=GB”></script></div>
Thanks
Hi Vlad – thanks, I know all about that, but this is not one ad to appear on all posts, so Single Post Content/Ads doesn’t work for this case.
I want to add individual advertisements in each post for the product that is being reviewed, using the WP composer window.
The Amazon ad appears ok – https://jazzjournal.co.uk/2020/07/14/mike-clark-the-oakland-groove-behind-herbie-chet-and-charlie-brown-2 – but I cannot see how to make text run around it, as if it were an image or Single Post Content ad.
I am trying to achieve this look: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bWJ1qKeQLI-NPCrmkFgesYv6MxVM8iWs/view?usp=sharing
Is there a way to do that?
Please see the Amazon code in composer here – https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FDIuXRD1IwNsoLMLXoXl03fdYivPWDL2/view?usp=sharing
Thanks
Mark
OK, thanks, Calin.
Thanks, Calin.
Hi Vlad – no, that ad is set Theme Panel/Ads/Article bottom ad. I mean the Footer ad set at Theme Panel/Ads/Footer top. I have placed this code in the field YOUR AD CODE:
<script async src=”https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js”></script>
<!– JJ display horizontal 1 –>
<ins class=”adsbygoogle”
style=”display:block”
data-ad-client=”ca-pub-7426344127145001″
data-ad-slot=”2925354814″
data-ad-format=”auto”
data-full-width-responsive=”true”></ins>
<script>
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
</script>
but nothing appears.
Thanks
Mark
Thanks – it seems to be caused by the Leaky Paywall plugin, which causes a lot of problems in Newspaper. So when will Newspaper offer an integrated paywall facility? It seems an important feature for a newspaper site…
Can you tell me if this setting for Leaky Paywall looks correct? Activating ARH prevents one problem with Leaky Paywall (but causes the YouTube squash-up):
Alternative Restriction Handling
Enable this if you are using a caching plugin or your host uses heavy caching and the paywall notice is not displaying correctly on your site.
Alternative Restrictions Post Container
article .td-post-content
(CSS selector of the container that contains the content on a post and custom post type.)
Alternative Restrictions Page Container
article .td-post-content
(CSS selector of the container that contains the content on a page.)
Thanks
Thanks – and the Footer Top ad? I am still seeing no ad above the footer.
I now see I can adjust size in Theme Panel/Ads/YOUR**AD/Advance Usage.
But above that parameter Theme Panel says: “If you leave the AdSense size boxes on Auto, the theme will automatically resize the Google Ads.”
Is the theme no longer resizing AdSense ads? I wouldn’t have thought AdSense would intend them to be so small.
For your info, I have now reverted YOUR ARTICLE TOP AD to data-ad-format=”auto” as using Google’s fixed size has no effect.
Lastly, I have placed code in the Footer Top field but no ad appears:
<script async src=”https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js”></script>
<!– JJ display horizontal 1 –>
<ins class=”adsbygoogle”
style=”display:block”
data-ad-client=”ca-pub-7426344127145001″
data-ad-slot=”2925354814″
data-ad-format=”auto”
data-full-width-responsive=”true”></ins>
<script>
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
</script>
Thanks
MG
Are you saying I don’t need any div tags if ad code is auto? A lot of guidance (a manual, an updated ad guide page from Newspaper?) is needed here. I am spending hours doing a survey of various ad placements and will report in spreadsheet. Content is suffering needless to say. So much for easy Newspaper and editors get on with the content or some such Newspaper promotional slogan…
To return to this, please take a look at this:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1otJxjB97dWWl7bnRrOyH2kjuVwWsD4VW/view?usp=sharing
Remind me why do “align text left”, “align text center” and “align text right” not work?
I don’t want a quote in only the left or right half of the column but right across. So please don’t tell me to use classic edit – I understand that but it’s not what I want.
Is this a fault in WP or in Newspaper? All we can get is centred.
Also, adjusting the font size in Theme Panel/Theme Font/Pull Quote has no effect on the feature called Pull Quote Left / Center / Right in wp-admin/post. Correct? Why not?
Lastly, in wp-admin/post, Theme Settings/Quote Styles, the selection of anything other than Default overlays the quoted material across the post content, making post content uneditable. Looks ok in the live page, but it’s terrible when it comes to editing…
The quotes function in Newspaper seems to need a complete overhaul – put on your list before issuing another Hello! mag type template? Good quote design is a newspaper basic.
As I say in 1) above, the Nadine Axisa ad is fine. But note it is NOT AdSense code. The problem is with AdSense code placed in ARTICLE INLINE AD fields in Single Post Content. It usually doesn’t show an ad in Safari or Firefox.
I will try adjusting the width to 720px from 320px.
Now I see that Single Post Content AdSense ads are appearing erratically – typically absent – in Safari and Firefox but seem to appear consistently well in Chrome.
As I say, same AdSense code works fine in Ad Boxes. And non-AdSense ads hosted in Media appear fine in Single Post Content.
Does Single Post Content have a special problem with Safari and Firefox?
Ok – I now realise template doesn’t reflect social selections in tagDiv, only in live post.
There ought to be documentation on this, or is there already?
So you’re saying it’s impossible to set a default for Flex Block 3/Style/Module Fonts/Article Title 1 and Flex Block 3/Style/Module Fonts/Article Title 2?
I cannot see anywhere in Theme Panel to set default font, size etc for Module Flex 1 or Module Flex 3. That’s what I need. If it exists.
I mean the grey subtitle you see here: https://jazzjournal.co.uk/2020/04/16/obituary-wallace-roney/
“The generalisation that the trumpeter sounded too much like his teacher Miles Davis doesn’t stand up to scrutiny”
Font can be changed but is there any parameter to change subtitle colour?
If not, any CSS?
Thanks
You haven’t answered 2) Where is “set the width to auto or 100%”? I can’t see any option to set width in Single Post Content/Ads
Do you mean in the CSS tab?
Or do you mean add “auto” or “100%” to the ad code? If so, where?
Please be explicit.
For a moment one of my ads appeared in Single Post Content but mostly they don’t. Why? Here is an example – div tags are correct, yes?
<div style=”width:320px”>
<script async src=”https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js”></script>
<!– JJ display 1 –>
<ins class=”adsbygoogle”
style=”display:block”
data-ad-client=”ca-pub-7426344127145001″
data-ad-slot=”3267840445″
data-ad-format=”auto”
data-full-width-responsive=”true”></ins>
<script>
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
</script>
</div>
This YouTube video is out of date. It makes no mention of the need to apply div tags:
<div style=”width:320px”>
Google code
</div>
And still you AsSense ad may not appear.
You always say that.
Google say (https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/9189018?hl=en-GB&ref_topic=28893) “Your ad code should appear exactly as it does in your AdSense account”
I notice in page source Newspaper is adding code, namely, data-adsbygoogle-status=”done”
<script async=”” src=”https://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js”></script>
<ins class=”adsbygoogle”
style=”display:block; text-align:center;”
data-ad-layout=”in-article”
data-ad-format=”fluid”
data-ad-client=”ca-pub-7426344127145001″
data-ad-slot=”4341442480″ data-adsbygoogle-status=”done”></ins>
<script>
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
</script>
Significant?
