I deleted the theme, reinstalled it, then checked for plugin compatibility. WPBakery Visual Composer seems to shut it down. Now my site is just broken, but still appears. 🙁

We have updated all the plugin tagDiv of the theme and the child theme to V6.3 but the problem has not changed.

Also, the Styles 9, 10 and 11 does not display the youtube/vimeo videos to featured video on articles. It is only a background image and not video.

I use qTranslate X. Never tried WPMU but I read about it when I faced the same question as you. You said “either WPMU or creating a multi site” but if I recall correctly, WPMU works as a multi site management system. WPMU physically creates X entries per content (1 per language) while plugins like qtrans create only one with all languages inside [sorry this is wildly phrased]. Multi site is supposedly good for performance because having the content separated makes it easier to serve it, while qtransx has to slice the content and extract the desired language upon request. Cache can fix this. Multi site is supposedly worse regarding compatibility and content consistency. It depends on the kind of use your site gets, and whether your content will greatly vary across languages or will be just straight forward translation.

I started with qTranslate and then moved on to mqTranslate, which was deprecated in favor of qTranslate X some time after. It’s not perfect but it’s the only alternative to the multi site option of WPMU, I believe, and it works very well, for a free plugin at least. The plugin is actively being supported and developed which is nice. The only thing missing is native multi slug support (same post has different URLs, one per language) but there’s a plugin for that and they say they will incorporate it in the future.

qTransX can give you a bit of work if you use some “non-mainstream” plugins as these sometimes do not take multi language support into consideration. Many mainstream plugins work flawlessly and others have plugins to extend qtransx compatibility. For instance, I use these ones:
WPBakery Visual Composer & qTranslate-X
WordPress SEO & qTranslate-X
WooCommerce & qTranslate-X
qTranslate slug (for the language based URLs)

Some configurations can have a performance impact in cheap servers, but with a well configured cache it’s actually pretty solid. I run a shitty shared server (for the time being) with ease but I do not use features like browser-language detection and redirection, I use the simple “language in the url” option (example.com/en/ example.com/pt/ etc).

In the end I think it comes down to the degree of support needed. “Hands on” kind of persons might be better off with qTransX, otherwise it might be good to check out WPMU forums and documentation to see if they offer the support it usually comes with premium stuff.

The Visual Composer plugin it’s tested with the theme and should work fine, so you can try to deactivate all plugins except Visual Composer, clear the cache, purge the cdn file if you’re using and test again. Also make sure you installed the plugin properly as it’s indicated in our documentation: https://forum.tagdiv.com/how-to-update-visual-composer-plugin-wpbakery/
If the problem persist please let us know what theme version you use or make sure you use the latest version (2.0) and VC 4.5.3

To confirm, that’s the response from the author of WPBakery? The site linked there is tagdiv.com, the site where tagDiv Social Counter mentions – hence why I’m asking.

Additionally, in looking at that guide, items 1, 2, and 5 are handled by W3TC. I’m not sure why they’re suggesting to just use W3TC for page caching – if you do not do database caching, your site is still going to get slammed.

Further, with the sole exception of some CSS added by A5 Custom Login (or whatever that plugin is), none of the CSS/JS is currently blocking. The only request that is is the second request to the server – that request is handled by custom changes to wp-config.php that it appears that plugin makes.

The only thing that I have not done is to optimize the images on your site – doing this requires that you take them and resize them to the size you expect them to be on the server. I do not even know if that is currently an issue, but I haven’t resized them as that’s not something that we do.

The major point to take away from this however is simple: I’ve done as much of the stuff as I can do from this guide. However, there are quite a few interactions between your different plugins that prevents me from taking a couple of the key steps listed in this guide.

Hello,

I tried to update visual composer but with no luck. I followed this post https://forum.tagdiv.com/update-the-visual-composer-plugin-wpbakery/. I think i have 4.4.4.

I have more than 7000 posts/pages in the database. You can see the website here http://artic.gr sometimes while browsing you’ll see a blank page (this is an out of memory error).

If you think that you can fix my problem, i can make for you a temporary ftp and backend user. I’ll really appreciate this.

You can also place custom CSS in the Theme panel (theme panel-> custom css)

3) in the Theme panel click CATEGORIES menu, then select the desired category to show its options. There’s an option SHOW FEATURED SLIDER you can disable.

4) the theme “only” has twitter, fb, pinterest an g+ buttons. You can enable/disable them all at once, but not separatedly (theme panel-> post settings-> sharing).
Theme only has sharing buttons, you may want to have Open Graph too for better sharing. I use the theme buttons and yoast WordPress SEO plugin to manage the Open Graph.
There’s many things you can do:
– mannually add/remove buttons, edit file wp-content/themes/Newspaper/includes/modules/module_modifier/td_module_blog.php from line 64
– if you use jetpack plugin, you can disable the theme share buttons and enable jetpack sharing module, it has many buttons individually selectable and manages Open Graph too (but it’s bloated, bugged and dishonest – based on my opinion only)
– you can get a buttons plugin like Simple Share Buttons Adder and another for the open graph (yoast wordpress SEO, jetpack). Theres many plugins for this.

The theme version is 4.6.3
The social counter says is version 2.7
The only plugin that shows that needs updating is WPBakery Visual Composer, but im not sure how to update that.

Ive deactivated all plugins except for the social counter and the subscribers still shows up as 0. I have reactivated all plugins again.

Any ideas?

I’m also having issues with trying to save theme settings. I’m using the latest version of both WordPress and Newsmag themes. I’ve disabled all plug-ins except for Wordfence, WPBakery Visual Composer,Ultimate Addons for Visual Composer, tagDiv Visual Composer Shim and tagDiv Speed Booster.

When in the theme settings page in the admin panel, I’m able to modify most of the settings without any issue. However, when I try to click on the Block predefined style section links to modify them, the ajax spinning icon just hangs and doesn’t pop open the menu. When I pull open the dev console in Chrome, I noticed this:

Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token < admin.php:1

Things that I’ve tried:

Cleared both the server cache and the browser cache.

I’ve spoken with my host, HostGator and asked them to check the admin-ajax.php and confirm that it wasn’t being blocked, which they said it wasn’t. They also stated that the maximum memory limit is already set to 256, and cannot be changed by the end-user on a shared hosting account.

Perhaps this is related, but when I’m on the front end, and try to use the left and right arrows to scroll through content in the various section blocks, the ajax loading icon just spins, and the console spits out the following error:

SyntaxError: Unexpected token < madlymanly.com/:1

Any thoughts as to what is causing the syntax error message in the console? Thank you in advance for the help!

Absolutely true. Everything “weird” started with 4.4 and when they started adding a bunch of new things for WooCommerce and adding some things which I think were designed to roll-in things others were selling as extensions/add-ons to VC.

So, for low traffic site, VC 4.42 and Newsmag 1.71 work fine. High traffic site and VC 4.5x .. not so much.

With VC 4.3.5 we never had *any* problems. Newsmag 1.71 good to update to for the WP security fixes, and then try to either use shim, or older version of VC.

AGAIN TO ANY AND ALL: issue *not* with the theme — it’s nothing TagDiv ‘needs to fix’ with new theme version. It’s an issue with Visual Composer from WP Bakery, bundled with theme to provide dashboard and additional widgets for custom layouts. Issue doesn’t impact ALL sites/servers. Oddly it seems worse with those of use with dedicated servers, but really weird things happen. Only real solution — I think — is for VC to fully re-write their code from ground up based on current version of WP, optimize it, and possibly break some things into extensions that most people don’t use. Why have all the code bloat for WooCommerce if not using that on a magazine site?

Anyway…. just my input on this topic since I was one affected. I don’t speak for TagDiv in any way… just my opinions.

Well, they kind of already have … on various threads.

Right now the *only* solution with Newsmag if you have this CPU spiral of doom is to use the shim plugin, and use VC as little as possible beyond the development portion of your home page. Make sure you have a lot of memory allocated to WordPress (at least 256MB from the wp-config.php file in addition to php.ini setting; you must do both!).

We started to see minor spikes once 4.4.2 came out. Prior to that zero issues. Right now we can use it, but anything later not so good. I can’t imagine if WP Bakery haven’t addressed this ins the 4.5x versions, that they still don’t “get it” and are not solving it — seems to be a “if 90% of people can use, the other 10% oh well …” which isn’t great.

Right now TagDiv is focused on (based on posts I’ve seen):
a) Newspaper 5 w/ features of Newsmag + better grid + new version of API.
b) Next Shim beta for use with Newsmag *and* Newspaper.
c) Newsmag 1.8 with bug fixes and minor updates/tweaks.
d) Dev work on possible alternative to using Visual Composer.

So — at the moment if your site dies with VC 4.42 immediately, then it’s clear you might need to go back one more iteration, and/or stick with 1.6 of Newsmag vs 1.71.

I have 2 sites still working with 1.6 and 4.42 without shim, and doing okay, but they are fairly low traffic sites. I have 3 sites on 1.71 with VC442 and the shim, and 2 of these are our larger main traffic sites which were killing MySQL in batches of every 10 minutes or so going from green to yellow to red, and back. Then CPU death.

Not sure any of that helps … not much TagDiv can do beyond the shim, and possibly providing earlier versions of VC to try for your system. Since they don’t develop VC, it’s not something they can “fix” for anybody beyond the reports they have provided to the Bakery folks as a developer/licensor in hopes of solution (and yet to see one).

Some theme devs are already leaving VC in favor of in house solutions or simpler things like Siteorigin builder (free/open source), etc. (( We’re using Page Builder by SiteOrigin with a lean WP home brew Bootstrap 3 theme for a client reporting system along with Advanced Custom Fields, and works well so far for that … )).

Anyway…. I’m sure TagDiv folk will have some reply, but likely not far different from the above rantings 🙂

Of course, it’s possible that the next version of Visual Composer will be better “optimized” …. frankly, I’m amazed they are not working with an example “DOA” server setup, reading the error logs, and trying to find what bit of code is causing the death spiral, and then FIXING it. But I’m behind on stuff for my own business, so can’t really point fingers on that 😉

Well.. note that for a “lot” of folks they are not having this “CPU death” issue. But also a lot are. Also there were a lot of conflicts with VC 4.5 and Yoast SEO.

So, not everybody having this issue. I know Radu has been trading email with the Bakery folks to share this experiences (and my server data presumably).

From what I understand, and might not be accurate their plans are:
a) the shim provides a solution for those of us with the CPU spiral of doom, as stop gap – works fine with VC 4.42 on my box — no problem for short term use at all as long as I’m not getting huge traffic spike ( so I check my CPU usage before messing with it )
b) they want to push Newspaper 5 asap; which has the threads of things from Newsmag (sticky sidebar, more layout options for home page; control over the blocks/images, etc.); and presumably will include VC 4.5.4 or whatever.
c) Newsmag 5 would then be a dev track for possibly building their own page builder that does not use VC at all.

So, there isn’t going to be a “death of TagDiv” or themes not working. Mine are working just fine and no need to upgrade anything “right now” for me. So, only reason I upgraded to 1.71 from 1.6 was for security patches.

But try using your old version of Visual Composer — the issue is with VC not the theme, but there is some bizarre combination of things that our particular server does *not* like at all. So, in my case using the 4.4.2 for short periods does work just fine; quickly tweak, then switch off VC, and huzahhh! I won’t install any VC version newer than that. Period. Luckily I’m not using VC for posts or pages; only the HOME PAGE … so in my case unless home page getting whacked, usually not big issue. I also have the addition in my functions.php to NOT load VC code on post pages.

So, delete new version of VC you installed;
reinstall older version of VC (any 4.4x version should work in theory)
leave shim active
turn on VC, and edit your page/layout.

Obviously you should be deactivating any caching stuff while messing with VC changes.

Anyway… mine is working ….

After thinking the ribbon issue was fixed by deactivating one plugin, it popped up again. I started playing with other plugins by deactivating them. For most, whenever I deactivated a plugin, I’d refresh and the ribbon with the “Edit Post,” stats, etc at the top reappeared. After a couple of more refreshes, it disappears again.

I repeated this over with several plugins with the same results — fixed, then reverts back. This makes me think the issue is something else but I have no clue as to what.

I tried clearing cache, different computers and same things every time.

Perhaps the WP-Visual Bakery issue? I deleted it and reinstalled it earlier today as per the instructions.
